How much did your engagement ring cost?

Curious to know how much people generally pay for engagement rings...

I was briefly engaged when i was young and stupid, and the ring cost a couple of hundred £s as we were skint students. Im in a long term relationship now and expecting a proposal at some ppint soonish (he took me to a jewellers to measure my ring finger 😂) so been having a look at styles etc, and shocked at the cost of some of them!

I think our budget is around 1-3k, not sure if this is above or below average?

Didn't bother. Didn't see the point. Waste of money when it's the wedding ring that actually means something.

£27.50 and I love it!

It is a Blue John ring from derbyshire

ah, after my late wife's heart. When I got engaged I was a geologist and had recently brought her back a sample studded with almandine garnets (probably gem quality in fact in their own right) so she insisted on choosing a ring with an almandine. Cost all of £80 in 2003.

In theory your ring should be triboluminescent (glows as a result of friction). Rub it vigorously against some cloth in the dark and see if you can get a glow. EDIT: and the beautiful purple of Blue John is so much nicer than an unimpressive clear stone (apologies to all the diamond havers...)

the wedding ring's meaning however, has nothing to do with its value.

Not a lot, second hand a long time ago. We had no money and used what we had for more useful things. Got it repaired recently and currently worth about £500, but I wouldn't change it.

twiddlingthumbs69 · 18/03/2024 20:49

£15k 26 years ago

TitaniasAss · 18/03/2024 20:49

£1200 twenty three years ago.

Lifebeganat50 · 18/03/2024 20:55

£800 in 1994
replacement for 25th anniversary in 2021 was £6k

Perfectlystill · 18/03/2024 21:00

Nothing. My engagement ring was a family ring so it was given to my DH by his parents to give to me when we got engaged.

Luckily I love it!

ViciousCurrentBun · 18/03/2024 21:01

Mine was £750 in 1997, another engagement ring thread yesterday had me look it up and it’s almost 3k now.

I love Blue John as well. I love to browse in the shops in Castleton looking at all the pretty Blue John jewellery (I'm not a ring person, but love earrings)

Skiskiskii · 18/03/2024 21:27

£1650 half price so insured for £3300. Need it revalued as 10yrs re ago.

Screwballs · 18/03/2024 21:30

I didn't know, OH had it made in London and was told to insure it for 8k, I don't know what the purchase price was but still far over what I'd have ever dreamt. It is beautiful, I'm very spoilt.

Woahthehorsey · 18/03/2024 21:31

£800. Lab grown diamond as I refuse to participate in the gem trade.

I was absolutely furious with DH for spending that much. Because we both knew I'd never wear it!

fishfingersandtoes · 18/03/2024 21:31

I think it was about £250 in 2004. Its a vintage one we got from a vintage jewelry fair with little diamonds arranged in a pattern and I love it.
I don't know if they still do those fairs or if it's your sort of thing but could be worth a look.

Gettingonmygoat · 18/03/2024 21:35

£79 15 years ago.

fuckssaaaaake · 18/03/2024 21:35

I've never thought to ask, I would never ask someone how much a present cost

hby9628 · 18/03/2024 21:37

£650 in about 2005. It's lasted really well. Never had any problems. It's a small single diamond in a round setting (sorry I don't know the proper terminology). It's lovely and simple

Floralnomad · 18/03/2024 21:40

Mine was £800 in 1989 . I don’t wear any jewellery due to skin issues so it’s sitting in a box with my wedding ring , husbands wedding ring and a couple of other rings .

Readytoevolve · 18/03/2024 21:43

7k in 2016. Valued at 25k

PandaG · 18/03/2024 21:44

First one was second hand, from a pawn shop £85 ish - we were students in the 90's. I bought him one too, a signet ring at around £60. Original ring I lost the central stone just after our 25th wedding anniversary, and the ring was too weak to fix. Bought a replacement a couple of years later, 1.5k.

smileyplant · 18/03/2024 21:45

Mine was a vintage emerald and diamond, £380 in 2020. Love it so much.

vacay · 18/03/2024 21:47

About 3k, but got it for around 1500, or so I was told 😆 I love it and him! White gold, no idea what carat diamond
We've just got my wedding ring two years after the wedding... £206 from H.Samuel and I love it, it's not about the price imo

Namerchanger1 · 18/03/2024 21:48

Holidaytime2024 · 18/03/2024 19:45

Love this

I don’t see the point in this! Something you wear every day forever vs a week’s holiday that fades from your memory

CaravaggiosCat · 18/03/2024 21:48

Just under 3k 10 years ago. Emerald cut solitaire.

Sandytoesandcrabs · 18/03/2024 21:50

£9k it’s absolutely massive apparently he walked into the jewellers and said I haven’t got a budget and they sold him the biggest most expensive one obviously! Wedding and eternity were like £200 each.
