How much did your engagement ring cost?

Curious to know how much people generally pay for engagement rings...

I was briefly engaged when i was young and stupid, and the ring cost a couple of hundred £s as we were skint students. Im in a long term relationship now and expecting a proposal at some ppint soonish (he took me to a jewellers to measure my ring finger 😂) so been having a look at styles etc, and shocked at the cost of some of them!

I think our budget is around 1-3k, not sure if this is above or below average?

Mine was £650 and it’s nearly 25 years old, I love it it’s a prince's square cut diamond.

next year is our silver wedding anniversary and I’m looking for an upgrade! Old dh to get saving 😂😂

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 18/03/2024 19:47

I got proposed to in Antigua and my ring cost over £2k at the time. Dh wanted to spend more, but I was happy with the ring/cost. When we brought it back to the Uk after paying duty etc, we had it valued and it was worth nearly £5k here. Still love my ring and wear it every day. Married 16 years this years.

Mne was £450 25 years ago. Sapphire surrounded by diamonds. Flower shape. It's Victorian and exactly what I wanted.

In the jewellers DH was asked about budget. He went a bit pale and croaked "whatever it costs" God love him 🙂

About £3, he proposed on the beach in Goa and we went to local market the next day to but a ring, silver and amethyst, 15 years ago and the ring and marriage are still going strong.

EasterBunnny · 18/03/2024 19:50

£500 28 years ago which is about £1000 now.

HideTheCroissants · 18/03/2024 19:51

My first ring 25 years ago cost £175 from a high street jeweller, never really liked it so for the past 15 years I had worn my nans after I inherited it.
I have always though wanted my dream engagement ring, and 2 Christmas's ago DH gave me a make shift voucher for the ring of my choosing with no limit.
We sourced the diamonds from Birmingham and had it made by an amazing jeweller, cost around £7k, but I could honestly look at it 24/7

OohLaFiatMultipla · 18/03/2024 19:55

About £500 I think about 10 years ago. I would've been so cross if it had been much more, we were mid house renovations and it's better spent on that! It has a sapphire as a centre stone and a halo of diamonds with an unusual split shank. It is very pretty and looks vintage. My wedding ring ended up costing a similar amount because we had to have it made to fit the shape of my engagement ring.

arghrain · 18/03/2024 19:55

Haven't got a clue! Didn't ask.. (why would I?) and it's still there fifteen hears later so can't be that bad 😂

EastCoastDamsel · 18/03/2024 19:56

God, I have no idea and I don't care.

I know DH went to a lot of trouble to find a ring of the best quality he could afford that would suit me and that's all that matters. He agonised over it (and I found out retrospectively he had asked my brother, and my best friend's opinion).

We had no money then and it's nothing fancy but it was such a beautiful expression of the care he puts into finding something just so.

And even if I found it was worthless (from a monetary perspective) I will forever cherish it for what it meant.

Love this

Perfect! How I wish we spent the enormous amounts my parents spent on our wedding on a house deposit instead 🤦‍♀️

CheshireCat1 · 18/03/2024 20:10

I don’t know how much mine cost, it was a surprise proposal and he’d bought the ring, it’s a solitaire diamond, I love it, the perfect ring for me.

ungarden · 18/03/2024 20:12

£4,250 25 years ago. I love it, it means so much to me. Stupid purchase though. Dh’s was £2000 didn’t even have a diamond 😂

SalmonFandango · 18/03/2024 20:13

£3-4k I think.

Overtheatlantic · 18/03/2024 20:14

£5k in 2010. It was more important to him.

SabreIsMyFave · 18/03/2024 20:14

I have no idea how much my engagement ring was. DH picked it/bought it for me, before he proposed to me. (It's a solitaire diamond one, 22 ct gold.)

SpeedwellBlue · 18/03/2024 20:15

£350 in 1999

RampantIvy · 18/03/2024 20:17

£0
When DH asked me to marry him, I said yes, but I don't want a ring. I'm just not a ring person. I wear a plain 9 ct gold wedding ring and that's all the finger decorationI want to wear.

Mumof1andacat · 18/03/2024 20:25

£850 in 2005. Nearly a 1 month wage for DH then. The bank phoned the shop to speak to him to make sure it was definitely him buying something. The diamond is still sparkling after nearly 20 years x

DustyMaiden · 18/03/2024 20:27

£750 in 1978

CaptinKitty · 18/03/2024 20:29

£2500 in 2005. We went ring shopping together, and I’m so glad we did because what we ended up with/what looked nicest on my finger was the complete opposite of what I thought I wanted!

SwordToFlamethrower · 18/03/2024 20:31

£27.50 and I love it!

It is a Blue John ring from derbyshire
