How much did your engagement ring cost?

Curious to know how much people generally pay for engagement rings...

I was briefly engaged when i was young and stupid, and the ring cost a couple of hundred £s as we were skint students. Im in a long term relationship now and expecting a proposal at some ppint soonish (he took me to a jewellers to measure my ring finger 😂) so been having a look at styles etc, and shocked at the cost of some of them!

I think our budget is around 1-3k, not sure if this is above or below average?

£400 in 2002. 18 carat gold band with 3 little diamonds in a row which are 1/3 of a carat.

£400, 22 years ago - saw one in a jewellers and said if we got engaged that's the type of ring I'd love and he remembered! He went out and got it himself (had to be resized) but he got it spot on! Never wanted anything else, aquamarine and two diamonds, in a white gold band. Love him and it still.

£2k 25 years ago, this thread is making me think I ought to have it valued for insurance.

I love mine. It cost £300 back in 1999.

My wedding ring cost £30. I had my nan's wedding ring (sadly no longer with us), gold from my other nan (still alive at the time) and gold from my mum all melted down and made into my wedding band. Now that both nan's are gone and my mum too, it means so much to me.

£5 second hand silver ring. Loved it, and still love him 14 years later 🙂

Aw ❤️

Curlyblondefemale · 18/03/2024 19:23

£500 It's Sapphire and Diamond, my Nan had one very similar that was passed down to me and I lost it around 20 years ago.
I mentioned to my husband when we passed a jewellery shop that it was the same as my nans and he snuck out and bought it.. Then waited months before he proposed on Christmas Eve.

CatLevelCare · 18/03/2024 19:23

Just get one you like, op.

Twiggydances · 18/03/2024 19:24

About £225 in 1990, a 1930s cluster. I still love it.

Horizonhopper2021 · 18/03/2024 19:24

£250 I warned him that if he ever proposed and spent a lot on the ring I wouldn't be happy. But at the time we had two children, now 3. I would much rather take the kids on holiday with that money that wear it on my finger. IMO it's about what the ring represents not how much it cost.

MatLeaveLength · 18/03/2024 19:25

£300 ish, love it

RabbitsRock · 18/03/2024 19:26

I can’t remember exactly but think it was around £350 in 2001. It’s quite simple & has a beautiful Kenyan sapphire. Sadly the jeweller we got it from closed a few years ago.

TeenLifeMum · 18/03/2024 19:26

£800 in 2001. A month’s take home salary at the time for dh (trainee reporter). Platinum band with emerald cut diamond solitaire.

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 18/03/2024 19:26

15 years ago. Mine was £1200, from an independent jewellers, not brand new or mass produced, worth £3k when valued for insurance at the time. I would avoid chains on the high street.

mindutopia · 18/03/2024 19:28

Probably around £700-800, not purchased in the UK, so that’s just a guess at exchange rate. Not a diamond but bespoke that I designed and had a jeweller make for me. This would have been in 2010. I love it and I’ve barely taken it off since.

Tel12 · 18/03/2024 19:31

Since you ask, originally I wanted a solitaire and there was one for £13, however my soon to be fiancé wanted a fishing reel for £3, so I ended up with a trilogy for £10 and he got his reel. Reader, I married him. You won't be surprised to know that it didn't end well....

MallorcaNights · 18/03/2024 19:32

Mine was €2,000 20 years ago.

My friends at the time were all going to NYC and Antwerp for theirs, spending €10k+, so I considered mine to be really cheap Blush

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 18/03/2024 19:32

£600, 25 years ago. Platinum band, diamond solitaire in the right size for my smallish hands (about .7 carat).

(still married)

MessyNeate · 18/03/2024 19:34

£3.5k two years ago,

Flower shaped platinum diamonds. I LOVE it x

Tatas · 18/03/2024 19:35

Mine cost DH about 6k to have made 5 or so years ago, it's currently insured for around £10k from memory. Wild money when I think about it! Especially when I add in the £££ of the other rings it makes for a very expensive finger 😂

I think 1-3k is well within the bounds of a solid budget - especially if it allows you to get the ring you'd like 😊 I've seen fantastic rings for less than 1k and horrendous ones for 10k so the cost isn't always the deciding factor!

surew · 18/03/2024 19:36

Eloped. No engagement ring

pippabg · 18/03/2024 19:38

I warned my husband not to spend more than £1000 on a ring as we'd make better use of the money for something else! Ever the diligent man, he got one for £950! He bought it in 2018 and I still love it.

taytay2020 · 18/03/2024 19:39

DH bought mine without my input but I'm pretty sure it was less than £200 from Etsy. It's perfect, 14 carat gold with a small diamond, feels really 'me', and I definitely wouldn't have wanted him to spend a staggering amount of money just for the sake of it. I'd much rather spend our money on fun experiences or home improvements! We also bought our wedding rings on Etsy for a similar price and I love how unique they are.

Revelatio · 18/03/2024 19:39

I’d love to think all these posts are related! Sounds like someone has been bought a ring and doesn’t think it’s valuable enough!!

forgotname · 18/03/2024 19:42

Probably less than £100.

Did bother me style wise as it's not my thing but got what i wanted with my wedding band (£2k) and compliments the engagement ring

mrssunshinexxx · 18/03/2024 19:43

4.5k in 2018
