Is Rishi on the way out? Could the Tories really be contemplating replacing him at this point in time?

He's on his way out alright, but nobody wants the job before the GE. So the Tories are now in the position of being led into the election by a bloke who'll be resigning the next day.🙈

TheABC · 18/03/2024 13:56

I'm hoping the entire Conservative party is on the way out. The question is which seats will be left to them after the next GE.

Clutterbugsmum · 18/03/2024 14:00

God I hope not. We don't need weeks of the Tory party dithering about for yet another crap leader. And all for a few months before they have to call an election.

If it does happen I really hope Sunak calls an election. And then they can sort themselves out.

Wilkolampshade · 18/03/2024 14:33

I mean they've fucked the country over so completely they can't make things much worse (can they 😲?) so bring it on I say, nothing like watching the Tories scrapping for a display of sheer, backstabbing and skullduggery. I heard Gove starting what I thought sounded like an early play for position on the radio this morning.... He wouldn't, would he?

Frosty1000 · 18/03/2024 14:36

Surely there's not much time now for a new unelected leader to be in place and then go into a GE. So I'd bet on him being the leader then resigning when they lose.

They’ve said it’ll be like when they get a new Pope. Everyone in a room, whatever deals are needed to secure support for Mordaunt then an anointing, white smoke, job done. And a promise for an election within 100 days.

She’s stood twice and failed, the only way she gets the job is with a coup.

BoohooWoohoo · 18/03/2024 14:49

I agree that they want to replace him but will wait until after the general election.

MissyB1 · 18/03/2024 14:53

It would be outrageous to do this to the Country again! Another unelected prime minister? We will lose count of them all soon! If they do it then they must call an election immediately, they’ve fucked us all around enough now.

CroftonWillow · 18/03/2024 14:56

Won't happen before the GE. Not even our saviour Boris can redeem them from here I'm afraid.

CaterhamReconstituted · 18/03/2024 14:57

The problem isn’t Rishi, it’s the Tories. They could get Churchill back and they will still lose badly at the next election.

AdamRyan · 18/03/2024 14:57

I wish they would just call an election rather than this interminable leadership posturing 🙄It is very boring

We don't elect a Prime Minister.

Absolutely. People don’t get this. We elect Members of Parliament. A Prime Minister is whoever can command a majority in the House of Commons. They don’t even need to be their party leader (although usually are).

5thCommandment · 18/03/2024 15:09

Not a fan of labour but I'll vote for them to remove the tories. Lib Dem's can get stuffed after siding with the tories on student debt after a decade of promising to vote it down. Lying c*nts. Hopefully labour get a massive majority and all the incumbent MPs on the other side resign. I've already given our canvassing Lib Dem prospective MP a piece of my mind, can't wait for the Tory MP to try it, will GBH his ears.

I do get this. I also think though that in practice the leader of the party has been a factor in voter’s thinking when deciding which party to vote for at parliamentary elections. It’s not some totally separate thing.

It’s being badly abused and people are very aware of that and rightly angry about it.

I do wish people would stop stating the obvious! None of us are thick! The point is we should not have a revolving door of prime ministers without an election!

ScierraDoll · 18/03/2024 16:20

I don't think they will get rid of him before the election. A new leader will not save their skin. After the election he'll go and probably replaced by Mordaunt but tbh who would want to be LOT for 10 years, which is how long labour will be in for. A new leader will be appointed if Penny loses two elections - hopefully someone with Conservative values

As discussed in another thread, Churchill wouldn't be allowed to join the current Tory party.

He'll be Tory leader when the election takes place, still expecting October.

LenaLamont · 18/03/2024 18:57

They can’t just remove him. They’d need the letters of no confidence to the 1922 committee, a vote of No Confidence and a leadership election.

They don’t have the time.

I suspect everyone else understood except you ….

MuggedByReality · 18/03/2024 19:03

Yes, Sunak almost certainly is on his way out, because there will be a general election before the end of the year and, based on all current polling evidence and all historical precedent, the Tories are going to lose it very badly. Those of us with a few grey hairs have seen this move before, in 1996/7.

Is he going to be sacked by his own party between now f the election? No. Not even they are that stupid. Some MPs are obviously making mischief, though, during a few very quiet news days. The Russian ‘election’ led bulletins for about 5 days despite the outcome being a foregone conclusion.

the80sweregreat · 18/03/2024 19:05

I'd love them to try and fob off the public with yet another leader , it would be taking the piss to be honest

That may be your personal opinion, but constitutionally there is no reason why not. Prime Ministers are not elected. They are appointed by the monarch.
The Conservative Party won the general election held on 12th December 2019 with a parliamentary majority of 80 seats, giving them a mandate to govern for 5 years. That mandate belongs to the party, not to Boris Johnson who was their leader at the time. It is for them to choose who is their leader at any particular time during this Parliament.
