Rishi is on the way out?

Is Rishi on the way out? Could the Tories really be contemplating replacing him at this point in time?

They can’t just remove him. They’d need the letters of no confidence to the 1922 committee, a vote of No Confidence and a leadership election.

They don’t have the time.

They don't need a leadership election, that only happens if there are multiple candidates. Nothing to prevent a new leader simply emerging by consensus of MPs, as Rishi did. They've actually got plenty of time, especially as the GE could be 10 months away. Which isn't to say they'll do it obv.

That sounds suspiciously suggesting we can't change things because they've always been that way.

Another way of looking at it is precisely because we can't vote directly for a PM, then we should have a say when they change ? Especially when - as we have seen with Truss and Sunak - they bring in a completely different manifesto to the one the public were allowed to vote on.

No one in the UK has ever voted for Rwanda, for example. We've never been given the chance.

Not at all. We, the electorate, absolutely do have the opportunity to change things if we wish. General elections were held in 2015, 2017 & 2019. The voters had the chance to change the government three times in 4.5 years. That tumultuous period in British politics, which included the Brexit referendum, culminated in the election of a Tory government by a landslide.

I’m not suggesting that the way in which British Parliamentary democracy is ideal. It’s far from it. But it’s important that people understand how it does actually work, and that people understand the difference between a directly elected head of government, such as a US president and one who is appointed because they are the leader of the majority party in parliament, such as a British Prime Minister. And that such parties can change leader between elections. This stuff needs to be taught better in schools.

SerendipityJane · 19/03/2024 08:59

General elections were held in 2015, 2017 & 2019.

That doesn't answer my point that the current policies being pursued were never put to the electorate. Nor were the disastrous Truss policies.

So the actuality is that once a government gets a majority, it can do whatever it likes, with nothing and no one to hold it to account.

I think the needle is too far to an extreme here. We need a middle ground. I don't mind leaders changing if polices stay the same. I object very strongly if every time we get a new leader, they seem to have carte blanche to bring in their own - completely unsupported - policies.

I agree 💯

They’re all on their way out. Hoorah. About bloody time.

I won't believe it until I see it. I can honestly imagine a future where having an election will be equated with "letting extremists win" and it being cancelled.

Maybe the reason Rishi! hasn't announced an election date is he has no intention of having one ?

On a much more serious note, if that were to be the case, then who could stop it ?

DuncinToffee · 26/03/2024 16:49

BREAKING: James Heappey has confirmed he has resigned as armed forces minister.

Robert Halfon has also announced he is resigning as higher education minister and will step down as an MP at the next general election.

Two in one day

Lambsarehere · 26/03/2024 18:43

After the elections is my guess, he will be fast tracked out by a confidence vote (there is already almost enough letters even now) Enough for a very intense meeting last week. If the conservatives are to have any hope at all, they need to get shot of Sunak. I like the guy but he has similar levels of charisma and energy to Starmer. So no, I don't think he has a chance at all of staying beyond the spring - and he was lucky for his brief spell as a technocratic PM.

Queenmaker · 26/03/2024 18:46

Nothing to add except I would just like to state that Gove is an utter slimey, whimpy, backstabbing toady.

If there are enough letters now, with the total number of Tory MPs set for a rapid decline, depending on who is left there could already be enough letters for after the GE.

DuncinToffee · 26/03/2024 19:16

Rishi has just appointed Jonathan Gullis as deputy chairman, replacing 30p Flee

No. This will happen before the election, if it happens at all.

Lambsarehere · 26/03/2024 19:34

Well this is no surprise! Left wing US supports left wing UK is not breaking news....

You think that Sunak will stay as Tory leader after the election?

Really?

Tough luck to anyone who thought "they couldn't possibly replace Anderson with an even bigger moron..." or similar.

Not a fan of labour but I'll vote for them to remove the tories. Lib Dem's can get stuffed after siding with the tories on student debt after a decade of promising to vote it down. Lying c*nts. Hopefully labour get a massive majority and all the incumbent MPs on the other side resign. I've already given our canvassing Lib Dem prospective MP a piece of my mind, can't wait for the Tory MP to try it, will GBH his ears.

Unfortunately there are large rural areas of the country where Labour haven't got a chance of getting an mp still and the best bet is to vote lib dem to stop the Tories.

I wouldn't be so sure.

For example this rural Shire constiuency in the midlands is predicted to turn red not yellow.

That constituency has been labour previously though.
I'm talking about the south west of the UK. Somerset, Devon. Yet to ever have a labour mp. Or even come close.

The South West does already have some Labour MPs.

Do you mean constituencies more like this one?
Doubt you could get more rural...

Still think Rishi Sunak will be Tory leader come the general election.
