Is Rishi on the way out? Could the Tories really be contemplating replacing him at this point in time?

They are so ridiculous with their constant leadership battles. A den of thieves these days.

Sunak managed to stop some boats

'Alarmingly high' levels of E.coli in River Thames found days before Oxbridge Boat Race

Rowers have now been issued advice including covering cuts, grazes, and blisters with waterproof dressings, taking care not to swallow river water that splashes close to the mouth, wearing suitable footwear when launching or recovering a boat, and cleaning all equipment thoroughly.

The irony that an Oxbridge event is being ruined by a Tory government is lost on the nation.

I despair.

Ridiculous. It's like the Brexiters saying people were "doing Britain down".

IsaidByeByeMissAmericanPie · 26/03/2024 19:39

Unfortunately there are large rural areas of the country where Labour haven't got a chance of getting an mp still and the best bet is to vote lib dem to stop the Tories.

Exactly the situation in our town. The only way to get shot of our Tory twit is to vote Lib Dem.

Vod · 27/03/2024 13:24

Sometimes tactical voting is the best way.

Yes same here. The whole of somerset and Wiltshire doesn't have a single labour mp. The only ones in the south west are in the cities. I think we have a good chance of going lib dem next time though.
Unfortunately large numbers of my extended family would vote for anything with a blue rosette on.

It would be nice if they'd apply themselves to running the country instead of gazing at their navels. We do not need a fourth pm in one term.

They like gazing at their navels as it distracts them from just how hopeless they have been in government.

FuckeryOmbudsman · 27/03/2024 23:42

I wish they would just call an election rather than this interminable leadership posturing. It is very boring

The tendency to decapitate yourself at regular intervals is utterly and completely off-putting, and I'm surprised they can't see that.

I thought they'd finally seen sense after electoral success (by wide margin) after Boris had got shot of the dissenters. But no, that aspect completely overlooked, and Boris turned out to be an unprincipled twat (rather than maverick who might just pull it off)

In what way is this true?

The water company in question is a public company.

Its an ongoing government choice to allow water companies to enrich their owners rather than investing in vital national infrastructure.

It appears the Tories through their inaction on this matter are putting forward a strong arguement for nationalisation of essential infrastructure.

meditrina · 28/03/2024 08:03

The water companies failure is a very good example of how systems that are meant to protect the environment and public health have failed because of lack of governmental ability to enforce standards.

When like Sunak, you're meant to be the "competent administrator" type of PM, big failures like that are really undermining.

There are many other examples of failure to provide good administration/management, and no big picture leadership. It's a sorry state to be in. But the timing of the clean water crisis is useful for them, if their aim is to shove as much expense/difficulty on to the incoming Labour administration. If they can't win, then they'll be doing all they can to make Labour a single term government. And awkward issues that can spoil the "honeymoon" period are part of that.

Labour isn't giving the Government a hard time on this - because the more noise they make, the greater the resources they'll have to put in to fixing it and the fewer countable pledges the better. They can still blame the Tories for
creating the mess, but won't want to be blamed themselves for not fixing it if they have made a lot of noise. Which is actually shit - literally - for the real world effect

ScierraDoll · 18/03/2024 16:20

I don't think they will get rid of him before the election. A new leader will not save their skin. After the election he'll go and probably replaced by Mordaunt but tbh who would want to be LOT for 10 years, which is how long labour will be in for. A new leader will be appointed if Penny loses two elections - hopefully someone with Conservative values

Your working on the possibly flawed assumption that she wins the election and retakes the seat.

She's associated with the bag of shit that's ruining the country right now- I wouldn't be so certain.

Yes the thing about Mordaunt is that she's very likely going to lose her seat at the election so a doomed 6 months as PM might actually be her best option. And it's probably easier to save the seat as PM than just another struggling junior minister. You'd get more resources and profile.

Gove and Badenoch can keep their powder dry for the post-election period because they'll more likely still be in parliament.

Since shit in the water was mentioned ...

seems just living in a certain area means you are on the hook for your water companies incompetence and greed.

(How come we can't choose our water company like we were promised when they flogged them off ? That "benefit" of privatisation turned out to be a whopper).

Why not just let Thames Water go bust and let the government buy the remains for £1?

Unlike gas and electricity ?

They are also monopolies, but made more complicated by the ludicrous competition arrangements, which is why energy users particular domestic ones pay far more for gas and electricity than in comparable European companies, but as long as the private companies make their profits that is fine.

Where is the sense in paying a company that neither makes the electricity or owns and maintains the cables that the electrons I use travel along?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 28/03/2024 10:37

Once upon a time, I would have said no way this close to a General Election.

However, a Tory party stupid enough to fall for Liz Truss's half-baked ideas, is stupid enough to fall for anything.
