Is Rishi on the way out? Could the Tories really be contemplating replacing him at this point in time?

True, he’s had no involvement in the budget over the last 4 years, nothing to do with him.

Correct, he is just responsible for the pot plants.

I am starting to think he is the pot plant

It will be this year. Autumn time.

Does he have sufficient backbone to be a pot plant?

Christ that’s a desperate non-story - all he said was that this was “almost certainly an election year” which is just a statement of fact. It’s not hinting that it’s likely to be January in any way. He can’t say this is definitely an election year until an election date has been set!

Clutterbugsmum · 08/04/2024 12:06

I betting Autumn as well, as all those 1st time votes who have had their education messed up by this government and Covid are starting University and not necessary having their voting sorted.

We need to carefully work out the worst possible date for an election for the Tories. Because with his unerring instinct for making things worse, we know that is the date Rish! will pick.

There was some smart money on 2nd May. But someone pointed out that doesn't then allow for the clusterfuck of the local elections to be used as a springboard for greater electoral defeat. So May was out.

Vod · 08/04/2024 12:29

Can we basically rule out anything before autumn now? I'm not sure what the exact rules are, but there's not enough time for one before the locals afaik, and they're unlikely to want to go into a GE in June straight after being slaughtered in May.

A rule of thumb is 4 weeks.

I had a feeling it was something like that. So early May is out, and surely they won't want to go to the country again just after the inevitable local elections collapse?

That may be your personal opinion, but constitutionally there is no reason why not. Prime Ministers are not elected. They are appointed by the monarch.
The Conservative Party won the general election held on 12th December 2019 with a parliamentary majority of 80 seats, giving them a mandate to govern for 5 years. That mandate belongs to the party, not to Boris Johnson who was their leader at the time. It is for them to choose who is their leader at any particular time during this Parliament.

Whilst true, there also comes a point at which all credibility is lost...

The Tories are beyond this now.

I live in a very Conservative area & have many Tory voting friends and relatives but i am v surprised at the level of derision towards the Tories... from Sewage, to Schools, Roads, NHS, GP services, Housing... they all blame the Conservatives for the mess the country is in.

They might not like Labour but they are very much prepared to either give Starmer a chance at Government or go LibDem.

There won't be an election until January 2025 - Sunak loves power, he'll cling to it as long as possible as he knows that whenever he calls an election, the Tories are toast.

Quite simply he has nothing to lose.

I think Rish! loves money more than power, and is hanging on in the hope that the "much vaunted" India trade deal will deliver him a multi-billion pound payday. That deal is currently behind schedule (because India is in election mode) hence the election is behind schedule.

It could all depend on the job offers Sunak receives

Rishi Sunak's spokesman denies the PM has had private conversations about setting up an artificial intelligence investment fund, once he loses office, telling me that while he "has engaged with companies in that field" he is "focused on the day-to-day priorities" of being PM

Never believe anything until it's officially denied.

SnapdragonToadflax · 08/04/2024 15:18

I don't think Rishi loves power, he doesn't strike me as the slightest bit bothered about being PM. He loves money, and the opportunity to make more.

I'm sure he'll vanish without trace on the day after the general election. He'll be running start-ups in California and getting even richer off the contacts he's made while PM.

Vod · 08/04/2024 15:26

I'd say he wanted to be in post long enough for the tenure length not to be embarrassing, Liz Truss territory. But 18 months gets him past that point.

We know that Rish! day to day priorities while being PM are enriching himself, much like Boris' were knowing what a woman is, so in fact Downing Street aren't denying it at all.

He has no hope of getting a deal with India before a GE. Not least of all because India isn't going to waste time negotiating with a pathetically weak PM and his zombie government.
