‘Benefit levels are too low…claimants are often not able to afford daily living costs & extra costs associated with having a health condition or disability’

So says a new report from MPs on the Work and Pensions Select Committee

Report says: ‘We identify that a key challenge when evaluating the adequacy of benefit levels is that the Government has not set objectives for what benefit levels ought to achieve or prevent. While there is an objective that benefits should incentivise work, there is not an explicit objective as to how benefits will support claimants with daily living costs. In order to set objectives, we recommend the Government first develop a framework of principles to inform discussion on benefit levels & help build cross-party consensus’

Noting the end of the thread is near a thread title suggestion: Service Announcement - government in limbo due to egos on the track

(might be a bit long though!?)

IClaudine · 22/03/2024 07:46

I thought one of @dontcallmelen's posts had a couple of good possibilities:

Sunak: one giant merry-go-round

Or Sunak: will the fuckitty fuckwits please fuck off. (But MN would probably not like that?).

which is a shame because I love it Grin

Zonder · 22/03/2024 08:06

Yes I'm cross at people pointing the finger at Rayner when she was found not to have done anything illegal, and sooooo many Tory MPs have broken the law and don't give a shit.

IClaudine · 22/03/2024 08:13

Meanwhile, James Cleverly spent £165,000 on flight to Rwanda to sign deportation deal.

I vote for fuckity fuckwits, with the proviso we are happy to have mn change it if they don't like it. It captures the mood perfectly.

Rayners house is Keirs beer all over again. The media need to get the spotlight back on the tories. Esther Mcveys expenses might be a good place to start.

IClaudine · 22/03/2024 08:16

More of James being not so Cleverly:

The governemts is struggling finding an airline willing too deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

I can't imagine many companies wanting to put it on their CV

Remember the outrage when Rachel Reeves flew business class to NY for a business trip?

The difficulty of finding a title is largely because absolutely fuck all is happening in Government at the moment.

We are at the stage where the Government would prefer their MPs to be out of the way. Last week there wasn't sufficient time to review/debate all private members bills, this week they can all fuck off home.

cakeorwine · 22/03/2024 08:47

Sunak - off into the sunset?
The setting of the sun on Sunak?

Notonthestairs · 22/03/2024 08:58

And whilst MPs go off on holidays -

"Can't get over that there's been a 68% increase in one year in the number of people who don't have enough food to 3.7 million people and it's not anywhere near the biggest news story."

"5% of the entire UK population are going hungry sometimes, including huge numbers of kids. That's abhorrent. It should be a major national priority."

"Even if you don't care about the people themselves, this level of poverty will put services you do use - schools, hospitals, GPs, the police - under more pressure.

And the consequences will cost more of your taxes to deal with in the long run."

(Fairly sure I shouldn't be copying whole threads & should apologise to Sam Freedman but bloody hell - surely these issues are why we turn out to vote? To improve lives and correspondingly benefit all our futures).

Around two in three special schools in Englandd_ were at or over capacity in the last academic year, the Department for Education (DfE) has said.

Earlier this month, Education Secretary Gillian Keegann_ admitted to school and college leaders that the Government had not done enough on Send.
Addressing the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) annual conference, Ms Keegan said: “If you look at special educational needs, we haven’t built enough special educational needs places or schools.”

Nearly a quarter (23%) of secondary schools were at or over capacity, while 17% of primary schools were at or in excess of capacity.

Argh.
I know rolls will fall over the next decade - but what about the children & staff in these schools now?

Notonthestairs · 22/03/2024 09:14

So we've got more children living in poverty and schools are bursting at the seams.
And the Government are busying fighting amongst themselves or writing blank cheques for policies they actually care about (being reelected). And the House of Commons is doing what exactly?

Don't they have a mate they can pay handsomely to do it for them?

Its the will of the people.

Interesting possibility that Rayner could sue for these tax allegations regarding the disposal of her house. It seems like someone is making quite the effort to smear her

Clearly someone is quite scared of her.
