Professions you would never date after working with them

I’ll start - surgeons.

One of them told me his wife was a GP -“because only one of us (him) could have a proper career”

Also - the overriding narrative that every female who complained about their outcome or consultation had “mental health issues”. They just couldn’t conceive that anyone would complain about them.

What's wrong with Scaffolders ?

I had them working on my house and they made my builders look very well spoken 😂 According to my builders, its a well know fact scaffolders are all rough (and they were!).

(obviously its a stereotype and there are decent, nice scaffolders out there…somewhere).

Perhaps there are certain professions that attract people who are looking for power and control. And if those professions can result in being exposed to traumatic events then that's a toxic mix for potential partners to contend with.

Gloriosaford · 09/03/2024 21:53

I think that is very true @Goddessonahighway

Let's just wheel out a load of stereotypes shall we.... I am close to at least two of the professionals mentioned here (and their spouses) and can confidently say that I see no reason not to marry them. Some individuals may not be likeable, but you can't assume that a whole profession are exactly the same.

This 👆

I am married to a police officer and he is a good guy, a hardworking individual who is committed to doing a good job. There is good and bad in all professions.

Teachers.

Anyone who has anything to do with horses.

Heatherjayne1972 · 09/03/2024 22:03

Police. I’ve known several in different areas of my life both romantically / friends/ patients of mine/ and when I’ve called the police or had a professional interaction with them - without exception they all have a superior ‘I’m better than you ‘ air about them.

and my goodness the misogyny is just horrendous

Why police or military? All of the people I know in both professions are lovely!

Misogyny.

Yes same. I ended up making a formal complaint to the IOPC because of a police officer who relentlessly harassed me because he was friends with my ex husband's OW. The snotty, self righteous prick. The threat-o-gram he sent me while I was having chemo for breast cancer was the straw that broke the camels back. Utter cunt of a man. Got a slapped wrist. Should have been sacked but hey ho.

They all do away from the show ring ! And they live off paracetamol & alcohol while the horses eat like kings. They’re all obsessed 😂

Lawyers. Superior and have to be right.

100% accurate. I'm a lawyer and after an argument with my husband I think "god... Who'd be married to me" 😂

Anyone in IT

That's a pretty broad church!

RosesAndHellebores · 09/03/2024 22:24

@TheFormidableMrsC interesting. I have only ever found the police excruciatingly charming and deferential. But then I am very white and very middle class and my family have been put through super clearance due to dh's job.

Very surprised nobody said mortician …..never dated one but it would definitely be a no!
Cant imagine a man coming home after a day of touching dead bodies and then trying to touch me

Has anyone dated one or is married to one, don’t personally know any and I’m sure they are lovely people…..but

Warehouse
Factory
In fact any groups of semi/unskilled men. Full of misogyny and gossiping hypocrites. The double standards are astounding.

Podiatrist - they like to think they're the life and sole of a party but you always get off on the wrong foot ...

Good one! 👏

I tried dating a proctologist once, but when we'd try to go on walks together, he was always bringing up the rear.

I also went on one date with an anesthesiologist, but he had a lot of gas.

Nanaof1 · 09/03/2024 22:39

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 09/03/2024 19:57

Used to date a shoemaker - but he talked a lot of old cobblers.

A shoemaker once tried to propose to me, but I could see he had no sole.

AlexaPlaySomeHappyHardcore · 09/03/2024 22:39

Yet another vote for police. The misogyny being the main reason, from the ones I’ve met/known.

I also wouldn’t date someone with a military background for similar reasons but also because my exFIL was retired military and his family all excused his rampant control issues and refusal to admit when he’s in the wrong with “but that’s what officers in the military are like…” fine if you want to put up with someone like that but I’d personally Nope right out of there.

MissConductUS · 09/03/2024 22:40

Surgeons.

What's the difference between surgeons and God? God doesn't think she's a surgeon. 😂

Salespeople also. ExH was a salesperson and an awful liar and gaslighter.

Femme2804 · 09/03/2024 22:45

Anyone who old enough but still in minimum wage.

fireman ( no matter how sexy they are, its a dangerous job)

pilot (been cheated with stewardess)

police

spy

Teachers

Resilience · 09/03/2024 22:45

Ex police officer here so a bit depressing to see just how many people wouldn't date one, but not unexpected or even unwarranted.

Any job that involves a degree of power over others will inevitably attract people who have bad motives as well as those who are doing it for the right reasons. I'm married so it's a moot point but I'd be hyper vigilant for red flags if I was dating anyone in that kind of job.

For different reasons, I'd probably also back off anyone working in the emergency services (or teaching) unless you also work in that profession. The amount of family events I missed due to shifts overrunning or cancelled rest days was no one's business. The only reason DH and I are not divorced is because it was the same for him so he got it. Really difficult to understand if you're not in it too. Same goes for any job with an expectation of a lot of overtime just to meet minimum requirements.
