Strange question I know, but inspired by listening to my DCs aged 4 and 7 having a discussion over breakfast this morning 😁
Discussion promptly ended when 4yr old declared “Hoops” to be the best. Yes, “hoops” as in tinned 😆

Linguine if it will all be eaten in one sitting but if I want leftovers then macaroni. Shells come a close second then bows. Not a fan of twists.

Also absolutely love orzo.

Dischi Volanti (flying saucers) are my absolute favourite - they're bloody brilliant but they're quite hard to find, sadly.

Thank you for posting this! I asked further up about the cheese, leek and ham Pasta n Sauce packets and this is the pasta shape in that one. It's such a good pasta shape but I've never seen it anywhere else and had no idea what it was called until now. I've been googling every pasta people mention that I don't know just in case.

Now I know what to look for even if it is a hard to find one. Grin

Rigatoni, farfalle and conchiglie

Topbird29 · 09/03/2024 19:06

Quite like spirali and shells. Orichetto as well. Sometimes have a mix. And also.spmetime do rigatoni and macaroni together and we search for any where the macaroni end up inside the rigatoni. Exciting times!

"I could picture what you mean but hadn’t a scooby on the name so googled frilly pasta and came up with mafalda 😅"

Mafalda is my current favorite. I can only find it at one store, a small Italian grocer here in town. I buy a few boxes any time I'm shopping there.

I also like all the mini pastas. I use ditalini in soups, mini farfalle or penne for various sides and with some sauces. Fideo cut spaghetti works well in soup and makes a wonderful light side with a little butter and olive oil, lemon zest and juice, and herbs to taste. It's fabulous with baked or grilled salmon, baked or grilled chicken, and makes a nice light meal with chicken or shrimp added and a salad on the side.

I hate spaghetti as it makes too much mess, also dislike bows as the middle doesn't cook as quick as the edges so either raw middle or overcooked edges.
I used to really like radiatori but haven't seen them for sale recently. I usually buy penne or conchiglie as they are the cheapest but sometimes treat us to spirali as that's my favourite!
I know you are supposed to match the sauce to the shape but I don't worry about that!

I feel the same about spaghetti 😭

mydrivingisterrible · 10/03/2024 04:45

Another vote for rigatoni.

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 10/03/2024 04:59

Great post op. I decided many years ago that if I ever go on mastermind (unlikely) then my specialist subject will be pasta shapes (around 350 depending on the source) and the history of them. I'm not an expert but I do find all of the shapes and names fascinating.

I am currently very much on board with orzo - but I'm aware that if cooked too long, we could be venturing into risotto / rice territory - but only by consistency. Never the Twain shall meet.

UpsideLeft · 10/03/2024 05:54

Twists are now my favourite

It's used to be penne but I love a twist because it holds sauce better

UpsideLeft · 10/03/2024 05:55

Fusilli

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 10/03/2024 05:59

Spaghetti, it’s only 28p from Lidl.

DilemmaDelilah · 10/03/2024 08:55

I know it's boring, but I just love spaghetti! And Angel hair or linguini. If small pasta then penne or macaroni, definitely not farfalle, radiatore, fusilli or any of the ones that have a thick bit that doesn't cook as quickly as the rest. I like the idea of the conchigelie, but in practice they tend to nest together I find, so my preferred pasta is definitely spaghetti.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 10/03/2024 10:04

Tagliatelle or penne, sometimes rigatoni.

MintyCedric · 10/03/2024 10:07

It’s mainly linguine and rigatoni in our house.

Dislike bows and macaroni.

TK Maxx is great for quirky shapes and colours of pasta.

MintyCedric · 10/03/2024 10:14

@MintTwirl I bought DD the dinosaur one recently…she’s 19 😂

Mairzydotes · 10/03/2024 10:15

Fusili or tricolore tagliatelle.

I've hated pasta shells since school dinners.
