Do you have a favourite pasta shape?

Strange question I know, but inspired by listening to my DCs aged 4 and 7 having a discussion over breakfast this morning 😁
Discussion promptly ended when 4yr old declared “Hoops” to be the best. Yes, “hoops” as in tinned 😆

Tinned pasta - spaghetti or ravioli. Real pasta tagliatelle or rigatoni or filled (cannelloni/ravioli/tortellini/etc) and Lasagne

AdaColeman · 09/03/2024 12:15

My favourite shape is lumaconi giganti (snail shells) as they hold the sauce so well and look interesting on the plate. They are versatile too, use as a main dish or just a few as a first course.

I like linguini for seafood, and always have some tiny shells (conchigliette) for adding to soup, and orzo for when I'm in a hurry.

StrawberryEater · 09/03/2024 12:17

Depends on the sauce. Spaghetti has its place (carbonara). Fusilli too (though I think of it as a children’s pasta). But my favourite pasta is either trofie or pici. Great with almost every sauce. Enough heft and flavour to be eaten with just olive oil & parmesan/pecorino.

I want pasta now!

Cavatappi. It’s like a lovechild of macaroni, spirals and penne. Goes with everything.

PinkArt · 09/03/2024 12:31

Fusilli.
Penne gives me 90s vegetarian PTSD

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 09/03/2024 12:38

Lidl do one called radiatori which I love. Otherwise it's bucatini or linguine. The right pasta definitely increases my pleasure in what I'm eating!

bumblebutt28 · 09/03/2024 12:39

Macaroni or rigatoni. They both hold the sauce well. Also like fusilli for the kids or if I make a pasta salad.

MrsSlocombesCat · 09/03/2024 12:41

Penne for me. I eat the lentil pasta from Sainsburys because it has less carbs.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/03/2024 12:42

Orzo, farfalle or fusilli pasta for me. I have an irrational dislike of penne.

choccychocchoc · 09/03/2024 12:42

Pappardelle for me. Or the one that's like pappardelle with a ruffled edge. Feels more substantial

Whatwouldnanado · 09/03/2024 12:44

Rigatoni.
My brother in law is afraid of pasta shapes in their dried state, all of them. Packets have to be out of the shopping bag and stuffed in the cupboard double quick before he sees them. Eats the stuff though. Weird.

wallpapercurious · 09/03/2024 12:45

Penne for everyday, pappardelle for a treat. Not spaghetti - too slimy and difficult to eat.

GremlinsTwo12 · 09/03/2024 12:48

This is giving me memories of the early 80s when I was 5/6 and going to a friends house for tea and I was asked if I liked spaghetti and I said yes. As at that point, spaghetti to me came in hoop in tomato sauce in tins.

I then upset the Mum as was presented with a minced beef concoction on plain white very long spaghetti which bore no resemblance to the spaghetti I knew and liked and I tried it and didn't like it.

Spaghetti (not tinned) went on to become my favourite pasta though.

CandidFruit · 09/03/2024 11:16

@theduchessofspork bucatini? I love this one too!

Not had bows since childhood, mum was a fan of bows 😁

Yes that’s it!

It’s so good..

LenaLamont · 09/03/2024 12:50

Hate bows or twists because the centre cooks slower so it’s an uncooked middle or overcooked edges.

Other than that, it depends on the day and the sauce. Macaroni for soups and stews and mac cheese, linguine for pasta with butter and chilli flakes, rigatoni for a hearty sauce, but anything at a push.

GreatGateauxsby · 09/03/2024 12:53

Bucatini > linguine > papadelle > spaghetti > tagliatelle

Malfada or Radiatori ideally.
If its bog standard i will take rigatoni or penne.
Bows are THE WORST

Thestruggler · 09/03/2024 12:54

Pasta shells, love it when the veg and cheese get inside some of the pieces

justaboutdonenow · 09/03/2024 13:00

My favourites are farfalle, linguine, spaghetti, tagliatelle, & fettucine.

Least favourite are penne & fusilli.

But it does depend what dish I'm making, like a lasagne, soup, sauce or whatever.

MintTwirl · 09/03/2024 13:00

I love going to TK Maxx and buying the more unusual shapes there including the kids ones like animals or transport themed although my kids are too old for them now.

Mostly we have fusilli or spirali. Also like tagliatelle, macaroni and orzo for certain meals. Hate bows,

HelenHywater · 09/03/2024 13:01

I can't eat orzo because it's too rice like

Like ravioli myself.

Riapia · 09/03/2024 13:08

Italy gave the rest of the world spaghetti.
The rest of the world still hasn’t seen the joke.

Librarybooker · 09/03/2024 13:11

Rigatoni or penne as far as DS concerned. DH is spaghetti every time. I’m pretty much not that bothered and would probably just buy a different shape every time we needed more pasta. I’d probably be swayed by what’s on offer.

Now rice is different. I’ve given up buying basmati because it’s texture isn’t something I’m keen on.

AmaryllisChorus · 09/03/2024 13:12

I love penne and linguine. Twists, spaghetti and rigatoni also fine.

Hate the bows - overcooked frilly bits, rock hard centres. They are an abomination.

Clearinguptheclutter · 09/03/2024 13:12

Not fusilli but our sainsburys does spiralli (similar but smaller) which we do like

I find tagliatelle and linguine best for mopping up the sauce

CatsLikeBoxes · 09/03/2024 13:18

I really like lumache because they're like a better version of shells - they hold sauce well, but I haven't seen any in ages. My other favourite is fusilli bucati - the ones that are like old fashioned telephone cords. I don't really like ordinary fusilli. I'm with everyone who doesn't like bows - they're very badly designed for cooking properly!
