Do you love your dishwasher?

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 08/03/2024 09:03

Ours has just broken, it trips the power whenever we try to start it. However it is old, some of the plate prongs have snapped off. Its a Bosch
I don't know how to choose a new one, the choice is overwhelming. So please tell me the good and bad points of your dishwasher, is the new cutlery shelf feature in some better than a basket? and anyone with a smart connectivity / voice control one, what is the point of this? Looking forward to an exciting dishwasher discussion 😀

Siemens here.
Better than my previous Bosch. New Bosch machines are far inferior to the ones 10+ years ago. Probably more efficient but much flimsier.
Has both a cutlery basket and a knife shelf. All pretty adjustable. Has a fancy blue light I quite like. Only downside is very small rinse aid reservoir.

Bosch and Siemens (and Neff) are the same company and many products are the same engineering in a different skin.

I feel that quality has hugely deteriorated in recent years, so when you’ve loved a 17 year old or 11 year old brand, you almost certainly won’t get anything like the same quality today. We loved Hotpoint appliances in the 70s. Our daughter’s experience of Hotpoint recently is diabolical.

DW engineers seem to confirm this problem, often with expletives. For my Samsung I googled part numbers from components left in the bin after two repairs (within 18 months of purchase) and found references for five or six other cheapo brands I wouldn’t dream of buying.

Dare I say the guts of the machines appear to be Chinese source? The wiring labels have unusual characters.

Browsing the shops it’s interesting that across the brands, some interiors are absolutely identical.

I’m now trying to source a brand that actually makes their own (with pride) as opposed to buying in foreign rubbish and simply badging it. From my research it appears that Electrolux and AEG do make their own.

Any info on that aspect gratefully received. :o)

Aeg electrolux do make some decent appliances (love our AEG larder fridge and our John Lewis tumble dryer is a proper workhorse) but expect to wait 3 week for an engineer if something gors wrong (we wore the dryer out within warranty)

aquarimum · 14/03/2024 08:56

Our Electrolux dishwasher was shit and replaced twice under warranty before we asked for our money back.

Why do people who don't have a dishwasher or who have one, but don't use it comment on these threads? Bizarre and unhelpful to the OP. Life is too short to wash dishes and do a host of other dull tasks. I wouldn't be without a dishwasher. We have a Neff which is very quiet in our open plan kitchen diner.

I reached your comment, wondering if anyone would speak up about this phenomenon
We live in an especially hard water area, have a dw glasses wash at 30deg, although the basket, in the middle at the front often inhibits optimum spacing.
Much of our silverware, cutlery, kitchen utensils, certainly knives, hand wash only.
We love our dishwasher, on at the end of the day, a modern miracle.

Now apparently, in large kitchens, it is a la mode to have TWO dishwashers,
expect the Marigolds heads to explode.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 14/03/2024 11:33

If you are putting a dishwasher on more than once a day and have the space then two dishwashers would make sense. I do think you need more cutlery and everyday crockery with a dishwasher if you've been used to washing up daily/more than once daily. These things have come down in cost relatively over the years. I wouldn't be without a dishwasher. The ability to put used dishes, cutlery, etc out of sight until the machine is full is a major advantage imho. And they're more hygienic, use less water and are a definite timesaver.

I'm beginning to think that splurging on a bottom of the range Miele is a good idea. Twice the price of other so called good brands though.

I worry that it will also fail within 18 months...

TeenLifeMum · 14/03/2024 19:12

We’ve previously had Bosch but replaced the old one with a neff for 3 reasons:

  1. it was quieter in comparison
  2. it has a little light that projected onto the floor that goes out when it’s done - no stupid beeping and very visible so family don’t open it mid wash
  3. cutlery tray is amazing
Runnerinthenight · 14/03/2024 19:38

It's so hard to know what to buy! The quality has definitely deteriorated. I have a Hotpoint cooker still going strong which has to be 20+. My Bosch fridge/freezer is approaching 18. I never got even half of that longevity out of a fridge/freezer - they always seemed to die around 8 or 9, and I doubt I will ever get it again.

SOxon · 14/03/2024 23:53

I meant to say, ours is an Electra, from AO, relatively quiet, efficient,
50mins @ 50 deg is the usual wash, warm happy dishes, sparkling
clean glasses, washed better than in scalding hot water at the sink
by any ’human dishwasher’
besides which,
”ain’t nobody got time for that”

Should last more than 18 months, but come with 2 year warrantee anyway.

some of the Bosch models have this feature too.

Yogatoga1 · 15/03/2024 13:37

Any opinions on Smeg? I’d need integrated and quite like the look rather than having a kitchen door on the front…

TeenLifeMum · 15/03/2024 14:08

@SirQuintusAurelius i think they’re made in the same factory and are basically the same. We got our new kitchen when white goods were hard to get so options were limited but I’m really pleased with it.

Have to say a bit hacked off with all the repair guys I've seen now for many years. None of them like in the romcoms...

Just want reliable.

Machine, not guy.

swimlyn · 17/03/2024 13:38

I suppose I’m old fashioned, but I’m expecting at least four trouble-free years for the money (£400 - £500). With the basic Miele a LOT more than that, I’d expect more use of course. Crazy or what?

Rough history for me (recall top of head) is a Bosch, in the 90s, nearly ten years no probs whatsoever. Next Bosch, ~2 years to a breakdown, water everywhere, big repair bill, then lasted 1 year before another breakdown. Skipped.

In a rental used a “no name” VERY old brand that worked very well. Eighteen months in needed a new pump (groaning noise) which we replaced for the landlord as he’d been brilliant for us. We were good tenants of course. Left the place better than we found it.

Next place, got rid of a similar a “no name” after a few months and ‘treated’ ourselves to a new Bosch. Big mistake. Three breakdowns in quick succession. Skipped. Terrible waste of the resources used in manufacture.

Then went Samsung as our other Samsung appliances were all brilliant. Big mistake again. Suspect it’s NOT Samsung at all. Many breakdowns, mostly leaks. (original parts identified as generic – earlier post above) Again, in the skip, terrible waste of resources.

Finally, a dealer assured us that Infiniton were VERY good, VERY reliable. Big joke, worst ever to date, lasted six months before water everywhere. Right now STILL waiting for repair man two weeks in.

Tempted by bottom of the range Miele but terrified…

Thanks to all though, for the many useful contributions so far…

TrickyD · 17/03/2024 14:05

We’ve got an integrated Neff, about 5 years old. I have never used it, that’s DH’s job, or rather one of them.

swimlyn · 31/03/2024 17:24

Can anyone tell me about a feature called Softspikes? It appears to be rubber panels on the basket to look after glassware? Can the panels be removed?

I’m looking at the 13 Place Setting, Electrolux ESS47420, with airdry and satellite rotor.

Impressed by its class C efficiency, which seems rare nowadays.

I can’t speak to Softspikes but in my many decades of using a dishwasher I have never broken glassware in the dishwasher, only by cackhanded handling on the way to or from the dishwasher. I never considered the spikes to be something that needed consideration.

That said our latest dishwasher (Siemens) has a fancy wine glass holder thing that is surprisingly useful.

I have a cheap built in one that came with my Howdens kitchen 5 years ago. It was about £130. It’s a wonder and I love it 😍.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 02/04/2024 19:18

We have a fairly new bosh. It’s shit.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 04/04/2024 09:02

update
we went with a intergrated Bosch series 6. It’s been good so far, i am already used to the cutlery tray although haven't figured out if there is a correct way to lay the cutlery in. I do like the time left being projected on the floor although we mainly put it on before bed so don't actually need to see that. Performance has been good, it’s nice to have the extra space without a cutlery basket and I can also fold down the top basket prongs so bigger mugs and glasses fit in easily which was an issue on the previous dishwasher. The app is a bit pointless but Dave the Dishwasher does text me every night to say he’s finished! Im sure it will be useful to know when he runs out of salt or rinse aid.
