Do you love your dishwasher?

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 08/03/2024 09:03

Ours has just broken, it trips the power whenever we try to start it. However it is old, some of the plate prongs have snapped off. Its a Bosch
I don't know how to choose a new one, the choice is overwhelming. So please tell me the good and bad points of your dishwasher, is the new cutlery shelf feature in some better than a basket? and anyone with a smart connectivity / voice control one, what is the point of this? Looking forward to an exciting dishwasher discussion 😀

We've had Miele, Zanussi and are currently on Bosch. Bastard thing is the bane of my life - it needs salt, then rinse aid, then the arms get blocked. It washes well if it feels like it but most of the time it needs another cycle or handwashing.

And DH is possibly the biggest numpty when he loads it. The concept of being able to get water round it seems a complete mystery to him. Between him and the dishwasher, I'm nearly ready for a padded cell.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 08/03/2024 20:54

Ok so mostly positive for the cutlery tray and a lot of love for bosch and miele, thanks everyone!

I watched a programme on TV the other day which tested an expensive Bosch against a cheaper Indesit. The Indesit preformed a lot better. Sometimes it's not all about the name.

After my experience with the shite hoover that died after 18 months, I’m very happily sticking back with Bosch!

Dotty2dot · 08/03/2024 21:09

I dunno. I think the name Bosch is sometimes more important to some people than the actual performance. Especially if bought from John Lewis.

I do , actually !
It does a good job.

My dishwasher is doing my head in. Keeps leaving orange coloured dirt all over the glasses 🤬

Runnerinthenight · 08/03/2024 21:31

I think older products were more built to last. That's certainly what I am being told. I have a Bosch fridge freezer turning 18 soon and never a single problem with it. Previous ones lasted 6/8 years and then developed puddles all over the floor. Current cooker is Hotpoint. Now I wouldn't buy Hotpoint now, but this beast is well over 20 and still going strong. Washing machine is Bosch and going good a number of years in. Tumble dryer is Zanussi because the salesman's granny had one and she loved it....

camelfinger · 08/03/2024 21:39

I’m not a fan of cutlery trays. Takes longer to load, and I’m not sure if you can take it out at the end - with the basked you can just carry the whole thing over to the cutlery drawer to put away.

I would love a dishwasher that is good with washing cereal bowls, they always seem to come out dirtier than when they were out in in our house.

plominoagain · 08/03/2024 21:43

Having bought the cheapest for years only to replace them every two years , this year we got a Bosch and its excellent. Didn't realise how bad the old one had got till we used the new one which was completely silent and everything was noticeably sparklier .

That said it's like teachers pet. I get a notification when it's finished , or needs topping up with rinse aid , or a service wash , with a ping on the app

I'm on the fence over cutlery trays. Our current machine (Neff) has one but it really affects the height of the top main tray so we have to hand-wash glasses that won't fit in.

We took the tray out of our Bosch because of the height problem. I also found the cutlery didn’t clean as well as when in the tray… prefer using the basket.

Runnerinthenight · 08/03/2024 21:56

I like the cutlery tray because it saves my bad back!

RandomUsernameHere · 08/03/2024 21:57

I took the cutlery tray out of ours (Bosch) as it didn't leave enough space for water bottles.

ClutchingOurBananas · 08/03/2024 21:59

I have a beko and I loathe it. It’s dreadful. It is useless at cleaning glasses. Doesn’t matter how much salt or rinse aid is in it. Doesn’t matter his you stack it. Didn’t matter that you’ve just cleaned out both arms and washed the filter (I have to do both things every single time). Nope. Your glasses will not be clean. And they’ll be harder to wash than if you’d just hand washed them in the first place.

it had good reviews. Presumably from people paid to write them.

Ferryfairyfar · 08/03/2024 09:22

Mine is a Zanussi now 12 years old. No complaints about it. My daughter has a Beko. I hate the cutlery box. Their cutlery is slightly chunky and the grid holes for the cutlery are various sizes. The knives and forks don’t fit in some holes. If the grandkids have started filling it and put the small spoons in the wide holes there’s no wide holes left for the chunky items and it all needs rearranged. I also find that some side plates don’t fit in their top shelf that fit in mine. First world problems, I know!

We have a zanussi that's 11 years old and still going strong. It's been brilliant but I do like the sound of a cutlery tray. It's a pest not being able to fit big things in it because of the basket.

allgrownupnow · 08/03/2024 22:33

With appliances it is best value to get a cheaper one of a good brand, rather than a less reliable brand with all the bells and whistles. Same machinery inside, and you don't need the extra programmes etc.
I love my Bosch fwiw
I wouldn't want a cutlery drawer, but others love them

SirQuintusAurelius · 08/03/2024 22:43

I don't know how to choose a new one, the choice is overwhelming.

First big choice is do you want integrated (built into your kitchen with a cupboard door covering it) or freestanding.

Then next choice is size.

I've just been through this and bought a Bosch Series 6 and very happy with it. The big difference between Bosches is that some of them have a Zeolith drying system ( an element that absorbs water and dries quicker). It has a silent mode which is almost dead silent.

The Bosch one I got has a cutlery tray (great, keeps everything flat and if you load it with things together knives, spoons together its much quicker to unload) and the top draw has a variable level - you can raise or lower it to make it deeper or the bottom section higher.

One thing to watch out for is that most modern machines have some eco- craziness that means that they are all set up to use less power which means that the cycle takes much much longer. I don't like leaving any big appliances that use heat running overnight (washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher) because there are too many fire horror stories so I didn't want something that would take four hours minimum. This may not matter to you but I would ask what its shortest cycle if it is important to you.

The one I got has connectivity but for a dishwasher it's pointless. There is no point in having the capacity to start it remotely because ...you know.. you have to be there to load it!

When you get a new dishwasher, do make sure that you check your water hardness levels in your area (google your water authority) and make sure that you follow the machine guidance to set the water hardness (for salt if you need it, if youare in a soft water area you may not need it at all so can turn off the function) and for rinse aid.

sleekcat · 08/03/2024 23:03

Mine is Bosch but it's not working properly. It's leaving white marks on the door and on the saucepans and it can't have salt in because it either uses it all at once or thinks it has. The light just comes back on after a day. However it is 13 years old so I suppose time to get a new one. I was going to get another Bosch as despite my current problems I still think they are good. Current one has a cutlery tray.

Copperoliverbear · 08/03/2024 23:05

I have an AEG. I love it. X

fussychica · 08/03/2024 23:08

I have an integrated slimline Bosch. It's probably the best d/w I've had and I've had them since 1980. Love the cutlery tray. Sparkling clean. Only wish it was full sized but it's all I could fit in.

fussychica · 08/03/2024 23:11

Should have said it's 7 years old. Fortunately all my previous d/w have been left in the houses I've sold rather than having any issues with any of them.

Agii · 08/03/2024 23:21

I had a 5 years zanussi and it broke. I liked it though, it had an air dry with automatic door opening.
Now we have a hotpoint hydro force 14 and so far so good, it is spacious, had both cutlery tray and basket and 30 min wash , 3d wash and a top Curtlery tray has enough space for small bowls / shallow trays.

PickAChew · 08/03/2024 23:33

We have a bosch serie 6. They're better made than the serie 4. Love the cutlery tray, though it restricts heights slightly. Cba with all the Internet connectivity so didn't choose one with that. You can't put a mug in it from the bus.

PickAChew · 08/03/2024 23:37

Just to add the auto cycle takes 90 minutes to just over 2 hours, depending how mucky everything is. It often goes on at 9pm, when we move had our evening cuppas and I've made the packed lunches for the next day and is done by the time I go to bed.
