Rain, mud, more rain and mud

I'm Moaning.

But is anyone else sick. To. Fucking. Death. Of the Fucking. Endless. Rain?

I'm peri menopausal, but fuck me, this weather is really getting me down. (And I know it's the weather because the very few dry days we've had, my mood is instantly lifted)

Please don't say I need to get out and go for a walk, get some fresh air (I've a dog and horse, so no matter the weather I'm out in it every day)

Is there anything I can do to cheer myself up? It's affecting my work as I'm just a grumpy bitch.

(it's been soooo bad on occasion I've even considered having my darling horse pts because I can't deal with it anymore)

Help. Please...

I feel like this too. I have a horse who lives out 24/7 and despite mud mats in the field its just deep thick mud everywhere. Even the horses are starting to look miserable at being wet all the time. Can't do more than walk as the ground is so slippery so he is losing condition and looks thin and has lost muscle. Also has rainscald on his neck. Went out in the 20 mins break in the clouds today only to get caught in massive hailstorm which was really painful!

@Gumbear oh no I was hoping mud mats would be the answer this summer if I laid them. I’ve sat there and thought I can’t have this anymore…I’m going to invest. Then saw your post!

PersephonePomegranate23 · 02/03/2024 09:03

I'm thoroughly sick of it. The constant wind can kindly bugger off too.

Can you get away for a short sunny break. We did last week and it was a real shot in the arm. Cheap city break so no big spends.

Took the words right out of my mouth !!
Absolutely sick to death of it !!
im also peri menopausal!
And like u when it’s been dry I’ve been happy going out and doing stuff !
arhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !

backinthebox · 02/03/2024 09:10

@OriginalFloorboards i have a 5x5m square of mud mats and my horses all stand together on it huddled up
like it’s a life raft. They are like magic - the ground around them is so deep that they disappear up to their knees in it. They choose to stand on them, and my only regret is a didn’t buy more! They have access to 3/4 acre of sacrificial paddock, but choose the raft 90% of the time atm.

I work in the holiday industry and quite literally get away to the sunshine nearly every time I go to work. Doesn’t change the fact that my household is still eyeball deep in mud.

Thanks @backinthebox I am definitely going to invest in some this summer and get sorted. That’s made my mind up. We are sandy soil but despite unground drainage we have low lying areas that just flood.

The water isn’t draining fast in the winter paddock and they choose to drink and slosh about in this putrid water rather than drink fresh from the troughs!

I wouldn’t mind but one of them won’t even walk through puddles (the drama) on a hack then I see her splashing through that.

The mud is on another level this winter and I’m constantly wet, filthy and slipping about. The joy!

AhBiscuits · 02/03/2024 09:22

The rain is back and the snow is swiftly disappearing. We had an hour at 7am where all the local kids ran out to play and try and knock up a snowman. You have to snatch these moments when you can in this relentless misery.

I hate it. South Wales here. Winter gets to me anyway but I can power through January, it’s this time of year that does it. I’m at breaking point. Like a pp said, it feels as though life is on hold. I live in a town but I like to walk and run and in summer swim outside, and it feels as if I can’t be in my body properly because all those things are harder in winter.
On the climate change point, it makes me really depressed. The more the atmosphere warms, the more moisture it holds, and the more it will rain. We are likely to get more extremes so more rain in winter and more drought in summer. Everything less settled and predictable. It’s genuinely worrying for food production.
As for getting away - flying makes it worse. Rome sounds lovely though. Wish I could hop on a train and escape to Rome or Amalfi!

Tumbleweed101 · 02/03/2024 09:37

Everyone I’ve spoken to this week seems to have hit their limit with the constant rain.

We have had local areas badly flooded this year and many of them I’ve not seen flood before. Our roads are full of potholes due to flooding. My garden is soaked as we are heavy clay, fortunately I’m on hill so it isn’t as bad as some gardens in lower areas. Definitely missing sunshine and blue skys. When we do have an odd day it’s such a treat.

RampantIvy · 02/03/2024 09:44

I hope @lambhotpot doesn't complain when food prices increase because the farmers can't work the fields.

I wont complain i live alone so only me to care about.
But its just my favourite weather.
Plus damp cold foggy drizzly rainy days.

Plus damp cold foggy drizzly rainy days.

Sorry but they can do one now. Like every other poster on here I am sick and tired of only being able to walk on the streets instead of the lovely country walks that we have, I'm sick of having to layer up every time I leave the house, I'm sick of the low light levels that make me feel down. I'm sick of never being able to line dry my washing, I'm sick of never being able to do some gardening.

The list is endless.

Basically I love being outdoors, but it is just not nice in this weather.

The article does also state it's been the wettest February too.
I must live in a little bubble in the south east as it honestly hasn't rained much here at all.
Without doubt I can guarantee we will still get a hosepipe ban come June/July.

Edited

Where in the south east? I am and it’s been incredibly wet, this amount of rain is not normal!

frostyfingers · 02/03/2024 10:03

Yep, I feel your pain. Horse owner here and we are all fed up of it - one of mine now has to be on restricted turnout from an injury and I'm actually glad not to have to slog to and from the field and try to poo pick in a swamp. They were rolling in the snow in the yard this morning but I've had to stable them until it melts as it was balling up in their feet. I reckon it'll be at least a month before it's dry enough to turn out as I normally would at this time of year.

I have had enough!

Augustus40 · 02/03/2024 10:13

I gave up my car last April as no longer needed plus was looking forward to long walks! Of course these simply have not materialised as the climate is against it. The year before that I enjoyed longer walks to get ready for no car.

I hope this summer is drier... We shall see!

CherryogDog · 02/03/2024 10:15

Fellow horse and dog owner, sick of it.
I'm so lucky that my fields drain really quickly once the rain stops, but they're so slippery while it's raining.
I really feel for those with fields that look like lakes.
My boys live out, we're mid way building stables, storm Henk blew our last efforts down, and we've run out of money to finish them.
One of mine has a deep abcess, me and DP both have bad backs and the poulticing has just about killed us off. I've got him in a pen half covered in ground mats and half is mud that I'm throwing all my waste hay on so he's not sliding around.
He looks at me like he's begging to go in a stable, horse mum guilt is terrible!
I've got arthritis and nerve impingement in my back and trying to find somewhere safe to walk the dogs is hard, the pavements are terrible here, I fell over in the mud last week and my body feels like I've had a xc fall on baked hard ground!

BrightHarvestMoon · 02/03/2024 10:16

I agree @OldSpeclkledHen It's getting ridiculous now. I live in a little village at a high altitude, and there are 2 roads out - 2! And if they are both flooded, (not just puddles,) we're fucked. Can't get out. Happens on about 12 days of any given year to us normally, but has happened on about 22-23 days so far! (Since October.) Lorries and tractors are the only way out. A few 4WD can get out, but some flooding in even too deep for them.

The village never gets flooded as it's high up, but the roads going to the A road (a mile and a half away) get flooded, and OMG it's a pain. The farmers have pooled together to pay for better drainage, (council won't pay!) and they have been creating better drainage ditches (the farmers.) So hopefully, this situation will help us - and them! They are struggling too!

Their crops are being wrecked by all the water sitting on them, so they need better drainage. We are all praying that it's better after this winter. And also, YES to the bloody MUD. Our car hasn't been clean for half a year! Well, we wash it, and it's dirty as soon as we leave the village!

It's been non-stop since October. 5 fucking months. Confused We better get a stellar summer! 😎🏄🌻

Startingagainandagain · 02/03/2024 10:17

Agreed.

I live by the sea so we always get some serious wind...doesn't bother me too much usually but this year all that wind and rain and the storms one after the other have been quite depressing.

Also I have a period house and I keep wondering how long my old roof is going to cope in this weather...

I like horse riding as well and the local riding schools don't have indoor arenas so it is all mud baths and spooky/grumpy horses who are also fed up with the wet weather and gusts of wind.

And I am in the South East so I can only imagine what it must be like for people in the North...

jamswell · 02/03/2024 10:20

Worse year for the horses I can remember. I have to drag one of mine to the field each morning. It's so deep in mud. Couldn't get the fields topped in time because they are too wet. Muck heap is enormous and sodden and the lorry can't get on. It's bloody awful

IClaudine · 02/03/2024 10:25

No horses, but the cat has barely been out for months.

South Wales here, so used to it raining a fair bit. But this is something else. So sick of it.

jamswell · 02/03/2024 10:26

Our hay supplier tells me plenty of hay still around, but not the top quality stuff but not much straw

IClaudine · 02/03/2024 10:28

Those of you with horses, can the rain and mud ever affect their hooves? I just imagine them getting soggier and soggier and getting horsey athletes foot!

Very envious of you. Horses are so beautiful.

Where on earth do you all live????
I'm in the south east and we haven't had non stop rain at all. It's been a lovely winter. We've filled it with wonderful countryside walks and heavenly evenings spent in front of our log burner. I don't actually want the winter to end yet!
February has just been declared the warmest February on record by the way.

Whereabouts in the SE are you ? I live in SE and it has pissed down for weeks . The land is saturated, fields underwater and fucking
potholes every where!! Have got through three tyres so far this winter!
