Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Oh God yeah quarries! Terrifying.

Woods in winter. All stark trees and creepiness.

Giggorata · 01/03/2024 22:01

Zombies. Just can't watch anything with them. I didn't make it past the first zombie in the Walking Dead, for example. I haven't been able to go to those role play zombie events, or anything.

Yes to locks, swimming pool drains, wave machines, some weirs and those holes in lakes for water to pour down. Maelstroms as well, come to think of it.
Not keen on sink holes either.

insects and arachnids, not really that unusual, but I class them as “strange things”

cerisepanther73 · 01/03/2024 22:06

Sliding on slugs accidentally and slug juice and slug juice squirting out

Deep bodies of water anywhere resourviors ect
Afraid of getting trapped in a malfunctioning lift somewhere

Walking across bridges either swaying or with slats on them can see the huge drop descent into deep water...

ILoveSalmonSpread · 01/03/2024 22:07

The aerial roots on a Swiss cheese plant... bleurgh!

Estellaa · 01/03/2024 22:10

Church bells. It's the size of them, I think.

wincarwoo · 01/03/2024 22:11

People going high on swings. I have to turn away.

Estellaa · 01/03/2024 22:16

That reminds me, the Mary Rose boat fairground ride. I always think people will fall out when it goes vertical on each side.

Fernticket · 01/03/2024 22:17

I am so glad I found this thread, as now I know I am not alone.
I hate huge structures, especially if they are coloured white, such as wind turbines. I also hate huge ships hulls, and low flying aircraft, particularly helicopters. I used to live very close to an airfield which was used by the local glider club. The gliders used to skim the rooftops of nearby houses when they came in to land, and really gave me the creeps.
@Vroomfondleswaistcoat don't get me started on the elevated section of the M5. Totally freaks me out.

justasking111 · 01/03/2024 22:19

Walking on piers, seeing the water swirling below. There's a big one near us the children love. I try not to think about what's below.

Bridges over water, especially the Anglesey ones the water below is very dangerous

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 01/03/2024 22:21

Pylons- the hum. I always thought don’t be so dramatic when people said don’t live by one, until I walked past a wet one!

Capmagturk · 01/03/2024 22:22

I used to get absolutely freaked out by the 999 TV programme theme tune, I still get goosebumps when my siblings play it to wind me up.

Is that not due to some frequencys apparently causing some weird spooked out feeling and visceral response. I'm sure I've read that before.

Xtraincome · 01/03/2024 22:24

Large bodies of water
Things with too many holes in clusters
Watching nature programs while I eat food- cannot tell you why
Video clips of gigantic waves
Dog, horses, cats with those weird soulless eyes... see pic attached

cerisepanther73 · 01/03/2024 22:25

Walking across water ways bridges that can open up halfway to let motor boats in the harbour ect...

Someone scratching chalkboards

Noseybookworm · 01/03/2024 22:28

Glitter 😬 absolutely hate the feel of it and the way it gets everywhere! It's got so bad now that I don't open Christmas cards, I give them to my DH to open because I don't want to get any on my hands. Wish they would stop putting it on clothes too!

Also, helicopters - absolutely hate them, especially when they're circling overhead when the police are searching. I used to live by the Royal Military Academy and they were always going over our garden. I used to have horrible helicopter crash dreams 😢

Someone walking behind me on the stairs.

as a child I was petrified of stairs without risers. They still make me shudder occasionally.

its a marvel I’ve ever made it off the ground floor.

Yes those horrible slat 70s stairs, I was also frightened of them

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/03/2024 22:31

Used and screwed up paper straws. (I shudder as I type)
Things in water that belong on land and things on land that belong on water (looking at you Ships in dry dock)

flosset · 01/03/2024 22:32

Haggling

SlashBeef · 01/03/2024 22:33

I don't like big things under water. The undersides of ships and icebergs, big bouys, any large structure submerged... I can't explain my reasoning at all but I find it repulsive.

Carnewb · 01/03/2024 22:35

Yozzer87 · 01/03/2024 13:53

Putting my feet on a damp bath mat. Walking around in socks.

Oh I'm so glad there's someone else with the socks thing! Everyone thinks I'm weird but I can't stand walking around in just socks with no shoes or bed socks or anything gives me goosebumps!

SlashBeef · 01/03/2024 22:35

Oh and tornados give me a similar feeling of yuck and I torture myself by watching videos of them. It's not really a phobia, just a pure feeling of disgust 😅

greengreengrass25 · 01/03/2024 22:40

Those old fashioned lifts with latticework cover of metal which was drawn back

Yes stairwells

doorframesatdawn · 01/03/2024 22:52

Reading this thread has made me realise I have the heebie jeebies over more things than I thought. 😂🤯

Sloths - The long claws, the slow movement, their weird little hairdos! I find them so creepy😅

Joeylove88 · 01/03/2024 22:56

Clusters of holes definitley, planes freak me out just the look of them (i refuse to look at a plane when im about to board one will only look once its landed and im on solid ground again) they look so dodgy though the wings and nose...just threatening. Also that velvet type material you get on school bus seats makes my teeth go funny.
