Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

When the duvet is the wrong way round and the buttons are at my face

That doesn't give me the heebie jeebies, but I don't like it.

Me too!
Exactly those roads too!

Ah, not just me then. Mine is the end of the M5 at Exeter where it goes over the Exe (I actually take a detour and join the road slightly further down to avoid it) and even the teeny bit on the A380 coming into Newton Abbot over the River Teign. At least that is very short. I know the bit you mean near Bristol too but rarely go that way now.

Bleugh, that just reminded me - those Chinook helicopters!

Loads of them near where I live. They make the whole house shake when they come over, no wonder our plaster keeps cracking!

di2004 · 14/03/2024 17:47

Someone looking in through the window - especially at night!

A house that creaks for no reason, such as the stairs (this is my house, i'm sure we have a ghost).

When my little granddaughter points up to the landing and there's no one there.

di2004 · 14/03/2024 18:40

and railway stations. Quiet, deserted ones. Just creepy.

Cotton wool! I can’t touch it!

Exactly this!
Oh and pylons .......but I am of an age where the children's tv programme "the changes" scared a generation of 8 year olds senseless about the damn things 🤣🤣

Cigarettes- cigarette butts and vapes. All of them make me want to vomit. I can't look at people smoking or vaping and if I smell it it makes me queasy and faint. Seeing cigarette butts on the ground makes me retch.

Had a really scary experience a few years ago when out for a walk. A helicopter flew over really low and then hovered directly over me. Scared seven shades out of me! Hate them now.

My friend moved into a stunning brand new property but it scares me a bit. The living room is double height, and there's a staircase in the back corner that leads up to a mezzanine level, so there's a kind of balcony-type thing overlooking the living room.

I just can't sit on the settee that's got its back to that mezzanine level, I keep thinking "what if there's someone up there?" Or the one and only time I went up there to the toilet I was scared that I'd fall or be pushed over the balcony!

I know that in reality there's no more likely to be someone up there than there is in a normal house with a staircase, but Christ, the hairs on the back of my neck are tingling even just thinking about sitting where I can't see what's up there!

Locks on canals also freak me out, I find them hard to understand and a bit peculiar although I know it is to do with the landscape going uphill or different levels of the canal

The absolute worst has got to be curtains open when lights are on and it’s pitch black outside. Terrifying. Always imagine some desperate creep in Asda jeans and hoodie standing inches from the glass.

Lesserspottedmama · 15/03/2024 15:59

The hoover nozzle that’s just the basic small round hole with any attachments taken off. I always think about if it went on someone’s eyeball then would it suck the eye out. It’s such a terrible intrusive thought, besides being ridiculous.

Lesserspottedmama · 15/03/2024 16:04

People in fancy-dress masks. Anytime I see pictures of kids at Disney with those dressed up characters I feel so horrified. And film footage of them is worse, the way they move and wave, the oversized heads and hands and grins. It’s just so creepy.

Well I didn't have that one, but now I do! Eeeek!

Specifically Asda jeans?! 😂

The smell of lunch boxes
Cleaning cat bowls
Monkeys dressed in clothes
A flaccid penis

The sea and anything submerged in it! Like buoy's and the underside of ships!
Don't get me started on figure head's

Horrible.

OMG this is my fear exactly! Especially buoys with that hairy rope that goes deep. The whole idea of this rope going deep deep down to the sea bed freaks me out completely. I would never get close to one even in a boat.

BreakfastAtMilliways · 16/03/2024 20:04

Analogue clocks without their hands creep me out. Probably comes from some horror movie or other.

Clothes that have been dried for too long, go crispy and squeak when you touch them. Makes me gag thinking about it.

double post!

I never really liked the feeling of wearing rings, but I stopped completely once I read about a women who lost her finger when she jumped down the last few stairs in her house and her ring got caught on a big splinter. 😱

Pylons, factory chimneys, church spires - they just really creep me out, especially if you're travelling on a train or the motorway and see one in the distance and it seems to follow you.

Weirdly I'm not afraid of heights or rollercoasters but there's something about the other three that all seem so sinister.

Also nuns in black and white habits! That's because I saw a painting of a nun in Bramall Hall of Elizabeth Thimelby, the Lady Abbess when I was a toddler and because I was so young and the room was dimly lit, to a small child like me, the way her habit was, made her look like she had a freakishly long neck and her stare was so stern and it's one of those portraits that are designed to fool you into thinking the eyes follow you.
