Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Water towers, i cannot look at them, nasty things happen inside ( in my head)

I have an irrational hate/fear of the weird sprouts that grow from potatoes when you've forgotten about them/ they've been lost at the back of a cupboard.
I refuse to touch them and make my husband clear them out

Like spores

Scorchio84 · 31/01/2025 23:07

Ah no I don't mean that, they're not fungi the potatoes are just trying to grow, still gross though

Grain silos. We had an open one as a child on our family farm. I always wanted to jump in! Someone local to us fell in one from a height after a heart attack and suffocated.
I work in a supermarket and we have a walk in freezer. I have nightmares of being locked in there.
(I have seen too many episodes of Midsomer Murders and Doctor Blake!)

That reminds me I do feel funny when I see slurry towers because of how dangerous they are.

Empty swimming pools and the bit that slopes off to the deep end... large jet black bodies of water at night, wind turbines....so everything to do with water basically!

Icebergs. The thought of that huge mass lurking beneath the surface.

AllFurCoatAndFrillyKnickers · 01/02/2025 00:41

Worm casts on the beach.
Touching velvet fabric.

Edgar Allen Poe descibed as "The Imp of the Perverse" others call it "The Call of The Void"

Pylons and wind turbines, also the weird between-show animations on channel 4 for some reason 🤷🏻‍♀️

Agree with pylons but I think I'm forever scared by the school safety videos I was shown as a child in the 80's. I think there was one involving a kite and a pylon and maybe one with a frisbe and a substation.

Anyway, that horrible buzzing they give off makes me feel like I don't want to be near them.

Cotton wool! I can’t touch it!

There's many of us with this! I'm the same with polystyrene when it squeaks together😑

I’m kind of with you on the sunflowers. I planted some once for my children to water and grow and they all turned their giant heads towards the kitchen window. Always watching!

Maybe a plot for a Stephen King Novel?

Large bodies of water give me the creeps. I think it's that you can't see what's in there.

Also mirrors in the dark.

Definitely the mirror in the dark.
If I need to visit Auntie Lulu in the night, I take my torch so as not to disturb anyone with switching lights on.
So I'm creeping around an otherwise quiet house, feeling like I'm auditioning for the part of a burglar.
Get to the bathroom, and actively avoid the mirror.
Obviously been watching too many ghostly films. 😱

Put an apple in with your potatoes, as it's meant to prevent sprouting.

Empty churches even though I like history
empty anywhere people are meant to be in like a train platform
long empty corridors are terrifying
storage spaces full of creepy waiting stuff like a loft or garage
Antiques shops or vintage clothes shops ot museums if nobody else is in the room
wouldn’t be able to visit a museum with the life sized dummy people in
Suits of armour
also avoid my reflection at night in a mirror

Anything with loads of holes, even thinking of it is making me squirm.
People who pothole or dive really deep in to the ocean just can't believe people do that for fun.
The sea, Jaws really did a number on me

I hate watching people diving or holding their breath, it gives me a panic attack because I am rubbish at it and feel certain I would be drawing in their position.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 01/02/2025 23:45

Disused water parks. The dry slides and waterless pools covered in leaves makes me want to rip my skin off

I hope you're taking note of this Stephen. 😂

I used to read SK a lot , about twenty five years ago… him and Dean Koontz.
I think it’s the every day things that become scary in the dark.
specially when I’m half asleep, and I’m sitting on the bathroom throne, and the pull switch light is swinging slightly… the shadow from it is much bigger, and when I see it in my peripheral vision, it can make me jump out of my skin 😱

TheTempest · 02/02/2025 05:04

Moths, butterflies, bats, daddy long legs. Basically anything that flies erratically and I have a massive fear that they will get stuck in my hair 🤷‍♀️
