Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Mullioned windows in old buildings.

In fact applying for headship, there were two schools (1500 builds) that I discarded as I knew I couldn't have worked in them, especially after hours, alone.

My first headship was in a village school like that. The churchyard was next door. I was never last to leave after evening governors' meetings!

Wells
Open bodies of water / swimming in open bodies of water
The side of bridges / the decks of boats
Elastic bands
Turning eye lids inside out

@Lurleene OMG I thought I was the only one! My husband thinks it's insane that if I get one hand wet I have to first wet the other one before drying them both. Otherwise, touching the towel with one wet and one dry hand sets my teeth on edge!

I'm pretty solid on most things, but what gives me the absolute fanny-wobbles is driving over a high bridge or on an elevated section of motorway. I feel as though I'm being drawn towards the edge. So if you see someone driving in the middle lane over the Humber Bridge or the section of the M5 outside Bristol, and they are staring straight ahead with a fixed expression - sorry, it's me.

Do you mean that bit of the M5 southbound that’s higher than than the other side?! I don’t drive but when we go that way to Somerset every year I have to close my eyes and squirm away in my seat until DH tells me we’re clear, it’s bloody horrible.

I have a strange fear of pylons, factory chimneys and steeples - got no idea why as I'm not afraid of heights.

MadisonAvenue · 01/03/2024 21:14

Stairs without risers.

Staircases which go up many floors but where you can see down to the ground floor if you look over the handrail.

If I’m using the Underground I can’t go on any of the extra long up escalators unless I’m sure someone is behind me, I always get the feeling that I’ll topple backwards.

Rubbing stains on carpet with a damp cloth.

Statue of Liberty - huge statue plonked in a body of water - horrifying. See also something large rearing out of the water like whales or that ship coming out of the water onto the beach scene in the Netflix thing - can’t remember it’s name - apocalypse etc etc. anyway - sensing a theme here. I don’t like big things in, on or around water but especially when it’s a statue. I have actually scared myself just writing this.

When someone takes off wet woollen gloves with their teeth. Aaaargh, that stretchy, squeaky wool! I can't look away but at the same time my legs go a bit funny.

The sound of someone crunching an apple.

CatCaretaker · 01/03/2024 21:19

Another vote for belly buttons.

Airlocked pipes, the sound it makes, and the sheer terror of water bursting out of a tap after the water's been off. Electric showers freak me out, and if they randomly turn off mid shower - just nope, I'm done.

Dotty2dot · 01/03/2024 21:20

Bricked up windows.

AnEmbarrasmentofWitches · 01/03/2024 21:20

Helicopters flying over when I am walking outside. I don’t want them to see me. I always hide under trees or in bushes. I find helicopters so sinister.

newrubylane · 01/03/2024 21:20

Wet paper. The thinner it is, the worse my reaction. Wet printer paper or paper towels - a bit gross. Wet tissue or loo roll - unbearable, can't touch it.

Bleugh, that just reminded me - those Chinook helicopters!

TFZ9287 · 01/03/2024 21:25

Any kind of fruit squash drinks Sad but especially Ribena - can't stand to be near it, makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end and sends chills down my spine!

DaisyHaites · 01/03/2024 21:33

collar bones 😰

Yes!! That wump wump wump sound Chinooks make as they approach.

Seaweed. Hate the creepy way it wraps itself around my ankles under the water. As soon as that happens, my paddling is immediately over for the day. 🤢

LumpyandBumps · 01/03/2024 21:43

Identical twins. Knowing where my fear started has not helped me rationalise it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/03/2024 21:44

Those gym leggings that go up the bum.

Every kind of false finger nail, even the ones that are short and look quite "normal".

Ditto fake lips and inch thick make-up with contouring.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/03/2024 21:44

Wind turbines.
Eels ( shudder) even worse lamphries.Even writing the word makes me feel ill.

Anything that looks like an eel. Ran out of a pub garden when someone was eating these huge onion rings. The onions slithered out of the batter and lay there like coiled eels🤮

weegiemum · 01/03/2024 21:45

Things that are too small - baby corn, cherry tomatoes, mini cheeses. Gives me the shivers!

Cupcakes2024 · 01/03/2024 21:47

When its dark and your outside and you just get a feeling of someone watching but theres nothing there.

Whattheduck · 01/03/2024 21:48

Frogs can’t even look at a picture of one
Anything made of wool
Milk looking at milk and the thought of drinking it makes me feel funny
Quarry’s

Yes! the big cooling towers give me the shivers as do pylons, wind turbines and machinery that's working on the side of the road in the dark but has a light on over a wide area of space...shudders!!
