Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Eye lids turning inside out... the way the optician does to check them. Some creeps do it for fun. Gives me the absolute heebie jeebies.

The Goodyear Airship - in fact any kind of blimp. I think it’s that ticking sound they make when they slowly move. Luckily I haven’t seen one for ages but I used to have to go indoors if I saw/heard it coming.

Owls. I think they’re beautiful birds, but the sounds they make petrify me, whether it’s hooting or screeching.

Agree about wind turbines and those huge cooling towers. It’s completely random and irrational, but I can actually feel my heart rate increase looking at them.

Anything with loads of holes, even thinking of it is making me squirm.
People who pothole or dive really deep in to the ocean just can't believe people do that for fun.
The sea, Jaws really did a number on me

Houses that always have windows / blinds / curtains shut!

Gives me the willies! I always imagine someone spooky is living there and peering from behind the curtains 😂

That would be me then. Hate sitting in the living room with t the blinds open, and people walking by. Bedroom ones are always closed. Mainly so the lady opposite can't judge my slovenly ways 😅

Leela2 · 01/03/2024 18:36

Those giant arm knitted blankets/throws, make me feel sick and shakey. I think its a reminder of Alice in Wonderland syndrome.

When I was a kid my dad had a vinyl record that had big satelitte dishes on the cover, I was terrified of it for some reason.

Allotments, it's where the bodies are buried.

Also, cotton wool and belly buttons.

When I lived in a flat with a communal bin area, I was always scared to put my rubbish in the massive bin on wheels...just in case there was a body lurking under the lid. 😂

Big ship's hulls 🚢

Even that tiny emoji makes me shudder. Massive anchors and chains, too. I once unexpectedly saw the cinema trailer for Titanic and nearly threw up.

Oh me too! It makes me nauseas and terrified. There was a TV series a while ago that opened with an underwater view of a ship going by overhead - made me go cold and I used to hide my eyes until it was over. I can't bear that photo of workers stood underneath the Titanic's propellors. I don't know anyone else who is as creeped out by me by ship's hulls so pleased to meet you fellow sufferer!

CombatLingerie · 01/03/2024 18:42

I hate any talk of Space or especially our Universe and what’s beyond it ? How can it just end and nothing be there? It freaks me out and gives me a horrible shivery feeling a bit like thinking about what happens when we die.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 01/03/2024 18:43

I have trypophobia. So anything with holes. There's some weird polystyrene honeycomb shit in one of the fridges at work and each time my fingers or hand accidentally brush against it, it makes me wanna vomm.

Abandoned water parks. Especially if the pools are empty or partially emptied and slides and pools all covered in leaves

Maggots one landed on my finger once 🤢 I also don't like fruit that much for this reason. In case there's a maggot lurking inside it

UghFletcher · 01/03/2024 18:47

Old farm machinery, I know it doesn't work anymore but I'm terrified of losing a finger if I so much as glance at it.

Belly buttons. Mine became an outie when I was pregnant with DS and I had to stick a plaster over it. Seeing it made me feel physically sick.

Robinbuildsbears · 01/03/2024 18:47

Abandoned clothing/textiles bundled up in the street. Always reminded of stories unwanted babies being abandoned at certain times and places in history.

Beingboredisgoodforyou · 01/03/2024 18:49

I have trypophobia. It's a disputed condition but I feel disgusted, sick and anxious if I see lots of small holes or bumps. If anyone recalls the old Sanex advert of swaying naked people, that triggers the same reaction. Weird.

Let's see,

Walking in woods.
Porcelain dolls, I had to turn them around at night as a child.
Fog.
Oh and men who wear really tight jeans, especially if over the age of 30.

Squirrelsnut · 01/03/2024 18:53

Massive objects underwater, like whales and shipwrecks.
Damp, dank greenery that might have slugs and slime. Actually, that's not a weird one!
The sound of a bristle brush on wet concrete.
I can't watch anyone brush their teeth.

BouleDeSuif · 01/03/2024 14:13

Open curtains at night so you can see the dark outside.

This freaks me out.

Walkingwashingmachine · 01/03/2024 18:55

Someone poking the top of your arm.

I don't feel the day can start properly until I've put my socks on in the morning (other than in the summer when my feet can run freely). Otherwise I'm all out of sorts and unsettled.

The upper circle in a theatre. How does everyone not fall out?!

OMG I thought I was the only one who hated this!!!

I'm another one that has to do the same! Thought I was odd! Glad I'm not.

Unforgettablefire · 01/03/2024 18:56

Ventriloquist dummies, the snail slime you get on your foot when you stand on one in bare feet, and long fake nails especially when they're growing out and look manky. The curved ones add an extra shudder.

I completely agree with you and I apologise for quoting you with the emoji included!

Submarines. For some reason I'm chilled to the bone whenever I see a picture of one

Came to say this . Especially when they lurk about poking out the surface.
Also the strange mechanical shark on James and the Giant Peach.

I don't like it when aeroplanes fly over me , or in the wrong direction.

Unusualactualname · 01/03/2024 18:59

To save the planet, OH bought me a wooden toothbrush. I couldn't bear it in my mouth.

Shetlands · 01/03/2024 19:02

More things I can't bear without feeling shuddery:
wooden puppets
clowns
Punch and Judy (as a child I couldn't stand the shows on the beach)
false teeth
empty wheelchairs

Leela2 · 01/03/2024 19:05

A single boot on the road....is there a foot in it? A dead body on the grass verge? Creepy.

Turkishcoffee · 01/03/2024 19:09

mrswhiplington · 01/03/2024 15:24

I'm with you on the holes thing.

Whatever you do don't Google the Surinam toad. It has holes in its back and all its babies emerge from them. It knocked me sick the first time I saw it.🤑

I googled it! Couldn't help it. I'm not sure what my eyes have just seen 😳
