Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Submarines. For some reason I'm chilled to the bone whenever I see a picture of one

Same!! I couldn't watch a TV series before because it was based on a sub Marine. And it just gave me shudders!!

Bridges, especially huge iron ones
Submarines. Even seeing a photo gives me the shivers

Buttons, lots of them in a box. Too many holes!

mrsnjw · 01/03/2024 15:16

@strawberryswizzler yes anything with too many circles and holes. I can't even look at those headlights with lots of circles when they are on.

AffIt · 01/03/2024 15:18

The hole thing is called either tryptophobia or trypophobia, I can't quite remember (and as a sufferer, I ain't Googling).

I'm with you on the holes thing.

Whatever you do don't Google the Surinam toad. It has holes in its back and all its babies emerge from them. It knocked me sick the first time I saw it.🤑

fish and frogs

RegimentalSturgeon · 01/03/2024 15:26

Allotments, it's where the bodies are buried.
No luv, that’s graveyards.

Spiral staircases.

Me too, I can spot a loose button from a mile away, I feel sick just thinking about it.
It does have a name, koumpounophobia.

mrsnjw · 01/03/2024 15:31

It has a name!

Wooden chip forks and ice lolly sticks. I cannot bear to put them in my mouth <shudder>

Yep, with you on this one!! Adding wooden spoons too, just can’t bear the wood near my mouth!

Also agreeing with pool filters and stairs/ steps with no backs😱
The sight of fish on a fresh fish counter makes tears come to my eyes… cannot bear to look… all those staring eyes and gaping mouths and so slimy🤮 can’t sit with anyone who is eating fish or seafood…
Ddog has tinned oily fish for her joints and fur… have to deal with it with my eyes almost closed and rubber gloves on… I must love her, wouldn’t have it in the house otherwise!

jonnytightlips · 01/03/2024 15:32

Chickens, especially when they are walking.
Large bodies of water, bridges etc.
Toes also give me the heebie jeebies for some reason.

luxuria84 · 01/03/2024 15:33

I've always had an irrational fear of those big cement lorries.

There's something about the mixer bit on the back turning slowly that gives me the willies!

Pinkiepromise789 · 01/03/2024 15:34

I get irrationally cross if I get my socks wet, for example walking around and someone in my family has spilt something or got the floor wet from the shower...
I told DH off for this the other day.. after a shower, why not dry off on the mat? He clearly likes to parade around making puddles everywhere..

luxuria84 · 01/03/2024 15:35

Oh and low flying planes.. being able to see the underside clearly just freaks me out 😳

sparklefart · 01/03/2024 15:35

Monks

Large expanses of water

The sound of water/liquid being poured

Chewing

BanjoOnThePorch · 01/03/2024 15:35

Can’t bear turkeys, geese, or chickens, they’re just too “pecky” for me, and they’re moving all the time.
I cannot stand getting wet cuffs, they cling to you and I can’t cope!

sparklefart · 01/03/2024 15:36

Warm toilet seats

luxuria84 · 01/03/2024 15:38

Polystyrene <shudder>

tobee · 01/03/2024 15:38

Puddles of water on grass when it's not raining. So like a swimming pool/paddling pool/sprinkler made puddle of water. Especially if can see the wet mud as well. Just yucky and wrong.

BanjoOnThePorch · 01/03/2024 15:39

YES!!! Even if it’s DP, it’s so urgghh - even worse if it’s public toilets. I’ve never known anyone else say this one!

Oh yes wet cuffs are disproportionately unsettling. Had that yesterday and realised I've felt like that since I was tiny

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/03/2024 15:40

Adults acting like children on stage, especially if they have pigtails, frilly dresses, shorts, are frolicking and scampering around talking in stupid voices.

I recently sat through My Neighbour Totoro and it brought back the horror of Swallows and Amazons and The Railway Children.

Yes! That is what a bath mat is for!! Got my pj bottoms wet when I went to the loo in the night after Dh had a late night bath. I explained about standing on bath mat to dry off. Apparently it never occurred to him Hmm
