Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Mullioned windows in old buildings.

In fact applying for headship, there were two schools (1500 builds) that I discarded as I knew I couldn't have worked in them, especially after hours, alone.

What is it you find so disturbing about them?

Surely big huge panes of glass are more frightening?!

The racism on this site is worse than ever.

It was an observation, nothing more.

There was nothing .racist about it.

Aren't we .even allowed to mention Asian people now? 🙄

I have trypophobia. It's a disputed condition but I feel disgusted, sick and anxious if I see lots of small holes or bumps. If anyone recalls the old Sanex advert of swaying naked people, that triggers the same reaction. Weird.

I'm exactly the same even looking at crumpets make me feel sick Envy

Scorchio84 · 05/03/2024 05:58

@Words & @MadeForThis me too! Trypophobia 🙈

I came on to say that, even thinking about them makes my mouth water like I'm going to be sick 🤮

There's a word for that feeling, it called 'Waterbrash'. Horrible, isn't it?

Dinnerlady12 · 05/03/2024 07:25

Holes/circles. I can clearly remember the first time this affected me when I was 5. I never told anyone about it as I just thought I was a weirdo until about 10 years ago I discovered it has a name and is actually a common condition.

Stickers and sticker residue

Labels especially the big ones on duvets. I've cut them all off.

When the duvet is the wrong way round and the buttons are at my face.

Beds with no sheets or pillow cases. I would genuinely sleep on the floor with no covers rather than getting into a bed with a bare mattress with no duvet cover.

It seems like I have a lot of bed issues!!

@penjil, the riser is the vertical bit between one step and another on a staircase. The bit you stand on is the tread, and the riser is the bit in front of your toes.

Some staircases are called 'open' stairs because they don't have the riser between steps, so you can see through at the back of each step. A lot of people (and one of my dogs!) find them quite worrying to walk up.

Squit · 05/03/2024 07:27

penjil · 05/03/2024 01:09

What is a riser?

It’s the bit of the step that goes up. As opposed to the tread, which is the flat bit you stand on.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/03/2024 08:23

Clowns give me the creeps. Or rather, their faces do.

cerisepanther73 · 05/03/2024 10:09

@FuglySweaty

You've just reminded me of something,
i don't like big decorative glass doors in which you can only see distorted figures going past but appear as if they are coming up to your door,

I don't like Canal locks or weirs too

I don't like walking too much near stretches of water in any way,
I prefer walking near safe zone area

MoonWoman69 · 05/03/2024 11:42

I have submechanophobia too! The thought of machinery/mechanicals/vehicles under water... Ugh!

Big black square grates at the bottom of swimming pools... Yes, you, 1970s swimming lessons! I was petrified of them!

Shipwrecks of huge ships and oversized cruise ships.

Very deep dark water.

Sink holes/holes in water, like the Blue Hole.. Aaagggghhh!

We were once out on the motorbike, Liverpool way, I believe. We rounded a corner and there was a submarine out of the water, up on stands... I yelled all the way past!!! Just no!

The edges of pound coins or those bloody awful ring binders with the vinyl type of really fine ribbed covering... Eeek! Add to that flock wallpaper, the bits in between the velvet part!

Hovercrafts! Anything large and inflatable, blimps etc. Yet I don't mind hot air balloons, probably because the inflatable part isn't enclosed?!

Cauliflower ears on rugby players, toenails (my own!) and anything to do with eyeballs!

Thick woodland next to unlit country roads.

Heights, especially the tops of cliffs/hills. If I see someone standing on one on the TV it makes me panic and it's not me!!! I can't go two rungs up a ladder or stand on a chair!!! And you can forget the bloody loft!!! 🤣

Dry microfibre cloths! Although I use them as dishcloths ok, when I get a new one out, it gets thrown across to the sink via my barest fingertips and drowned before I can pick it up properly!!!

Reading this back I have issues!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Really long escalators in tube stations

Don't go to Moorfields Station in Liverpool then

BreakfastAtMilliways · 05/03/2024 21:20

Dry microfibre cloths!

My DH hates these because he frequently has dry hands with callouses and micro-scratches after doing the allotment, and microfibre towelling (and stretch polyester) on sandpapery skin is a seriously unpleasant sensation akin to breaking a fingernail.

DoubleOuch · 05/03/2024 21:30

Walking under stone bridges - like on disused railway lines. Spooky.

Railway tunnels. Super spooky.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 05/03/2024 21:35

The old Lloyds TSB adverts. The cartoon characters with long noses. Gave me a cold chill just Googling to check it's the right one.

Also, ye olde plague doctors. I think it's seeing the 'beak' thing as a child that's gave me the willies about unusually long noses.

fightingthedogforadonut · 05/03/2024 21:40

Peach pits make me want to throw up. 🤮

Also high bridges over water. The Dartford crossing frightens the shit out of me.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/03/2024 22:05

That reminds me, the internal organs of a bell pepper absolutely repulse me.

Of course we are, but to ascribe one person's weird curtain habits to a whole population/ethnicity is not only odd, but ever so slightly stereotypical, if not out and out racist.

justasking111 · 05/03/2024 22:32

I'm not a fan of pumpkins. Hollowing them out is just icky I have to wear rubber gloves

ClockworkDisaster · 05/03/2024 23:24

Microfibre. Can’t stand the way it sticks to any rough skin. It makes me have to lick my fingers. Even thinking about it makes me lick them 🤦‍♀️

LordFarquart38 · 06/03/2024 08:07

having my nails filed by a nail tech, even with the fancy type of file. Knocks me sick. If I do it myself at home I have to work up to it.

talking to someone with two little spit balls at the corners of their mouth

the collected food waste in the sink food trap

anything claustrophobia inducing

Amaarlia · 11/03/2024 13:29

I couldn't sleep last night and remembered this thread.

More from me…
Nuns…more as a child than now. Somehow I overheard a conversation about nuns cutting their own hair off. In my mind, that became a fear that they would catch me and shave mine off too.

The Guy Forks pub in the centre of York. We'd meant to sit in the garden, bought our drinks and there were no seats outside. We sat inside. I didn't even finish my drink before I was out of there. Hairs on the back of my neck kind of feeling!

blackheartsgirl · 11/03/2024 14:30

Really really oversized garments like those huge huge scarves I saw a male model wear once, with the big knit stitches. Freaks me right out

and yes to the no riser stairs, it’s only recently I’ve been able to go up or down them.. have to in work
