Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

Massive things, like pylons, wind turbines, massive tractor wheels, massive tunnels that water companies put underground. Make me feel physically sick

Edited

Megalophobia! It's one of mine too

Those plastic bootie things you have to put over your shoes at swimming pools. It isn't putting them on, it's touching them after they've been on wet disgusting changing room/pool floors. I always carry flip flops so that I don't have to wear them, I went into meltdown when I realised I'd forgotten them once so bought a pair that lives in the swimming bag.

kangaroos. Fucking monstrous animal human hybrids. Belong on The island of Dr. Moreau.

And after something I watched today, armadillos might be added to the list too.

Massive objects underwater, like whales and shipwrecks.
Damp, dank greenery that might have slugs and slime. Actually, that's not a weird one!
The sound of a bristle brush on wet concrete.
I can't watch anyone brush their teeth.

Omg are you me 😂

My creepy-crawly phobia is so bad that I have a patch of green grass outside my flat that I never go out on for fear of encountering a slug. Foxes drag all sorts onto it and there are mossy bits as well. I tried once to spruce the area up with an outdoor table, when it belongs to nature now, I won't be touching it ever again.

Things in water: I live in Brighton and the idea of the pier legs going down into the water is terrifying.

Submechanophobia. Also a fear of mine.

Quizine · 12/03/2024 21:21

Oh it's wind turbines for me also. So so spooky and the eerie sound they make. Up close they are just so VAST. I'm shivering now.

Dams. I get an awful feeling in the pit of stomach if we have to drive past one. And on a smaller scale, used stickers make me cringe 🤢

Dams don't bother me, but I'm with you on used stickers! 😫

Those long underground tunnels on stretches of canals that you can’t see the end of and you have to enter not knowing if you’re going to get trapped. And the ceilings are so low and dripping with green mossy water, and you have to lie down and push the boat along with your feet (potentially into another boat).
It’s just horrific.

I'm so glad I didn't read this before I went to sleep last night.
Mossy water dripping on you in a long dark tunnel 😱

Ponds and Fountains with statues in. The scene in atonement when she jumped in to get the jug makes me shiver!

I'd really like to get to the bottom of this fear because it's such a big one for me. Man made things in water terrifies me like nothing else. Clearly I'm not the only one who feels this way. What is it? Yes it's unnatural, but there are many unnatural things that don't instil such an immense, irrational fear in me. I mean I could be drowning and I don't think I'd cling to a statue in the middle of the ocean 😂

Someone putting their hand down the back or sides of the sofa if they're looking for something. Makes me curl up just thinking about it.

FruityPolos · 13/03/2024 16:05

Wind socks. There was a drawing of one in a book when I was little and it looked really dirty.

Also used plasters.

I got stung by a wasp doing that as a child.

FictionalCharacter · 13/03/2024 17:35

The top of my head. I’m really squeamish about it being touched and the thought of being injured there makes me feel really sick.

Furries. If I ever saw one for real I’d have to run and shut myself away somewhere. Though hopefully I’m never likely to see one!

catscatscurrantscurrants · 13/03/2024 19:29

Emley Moor Television Mast. My friend drove up there with me in the car. As we got close to it, and it was looming larger and larger, I begged her to turn the car round. It made me feel sick and panicky just being near it.

Tumbleweed101 · 13/03/2024 19:31

Things like knitting needles and meat thermometers.

Goforyourguns · 13/03/2024 19:53

winding stair cases. no idea why 😩

Roadtonowe · 14/03/2024 00:25

Love this thread!

I'm with you on the submerged horror. I hate the thought of knowing there's something under the water but I can't see it..... ships/icebergs/submerged village etc

Waterwheels..... especially working ones. Cant go near them and the noise freaks me out.

Stalactites/Stalagmites/caves ... just no!

Glass like water. Especially in caves!

Walking over low bridges with fast water underneath

TinkerTiger · 14/03/2024 09:33

Just thought of another one (as it's happening right now): looking at a sandwich after a bite has been taken out of it. I have to just bite it without looking

Just googled this and NOPE. Ugh.

Walking over a roadbridge eg when there's a motorway or dual carriageway underneath. I have this feeling my mobile phone is going to fly away and hang onto it for grim death! It's very odd. I don't really like elevated bits of road when I am driving and try to look straight ahead and ignore the fact I am on a bridge.

Back in the Dark Ages (end of the 80s) I had a Saturday job in my local Woolworths. It had five floors, two retail, two warehouse and the top floor was a sort of half space which they'd used when they had deli counters in the early 80s and now they only used it to store carrier bags etc. Every so often I had to go up there (in one of those manual lifts where you had to pull the chain door and then the main door across) to get the bags and it completely freaked me out up there. It was painted pale blue (why that should be heebie jeebie inducing goodness knows) and there was nobody on the warehouse floors at the weekend so I felt a long way from everyone.
