Strange things that give you the heebie jeebies?

Was chatting about this with some friends recently. Lighthearted!

I have an irrational fear of sunflowers. They're HUGE! I also go a bit cold when I drive past big industrial structures like cooling towers.

Anyone else get the jeebies over something strange?

I'm pretty solid on most things, but what gives me the absolute fanny-wobbles is driving over a high bridge or on an elevated section of motorway. I feel as though I'm being drawn towards the edge. So if you see someone driving in the middle lane over the Humber Bridge or the section of the M5 outside Bristol, and they are staring straight ahead with a fixed expression - sorry, it's me.

Me too!
Exactly those roads too!

Oh yes caving or any sport in a tight space. I can't remember the name of the winter sport where they're squeezed into a tube and sent hurtling downhill. Then there's kayaking as I'm terrified of rolling and being stuck in the kayak under the water. And those tiny subs.. I can't even look 😩
I went on a school trip somewhere in primary - Portsmouth maybe? and we went on a submarine and I felt like I couldn't breathe and that I'd be trapped forever.

WRT the warm loo seat one, I remember something in Robert Graves’s autobiography Goodbye to all That, where he describes the custom of ‘fagging’: a prefect/older boy enlisting the assistance and friendship of a younger one. Among the younger boy’s ‘duties’ was to warm up the loo seat. Shudder…

That curling sport thing gives me the creeps. Also speed skating where the skaters are all dressed in a tight one-piece with one hand behind their backs. Disturbing.

Sponges with little holes in. Escalators in London tube stations freaked me out so much so my parents had to plan journeys which didn't involve stations with those installed. Oddly enough I was ok in department stores with them!

Bridetobe2025 · 04/03/2024 13:47

@Words Trypophobia I have it too. Clusters of tiny holes, thick black lines/ cracks 🤮

Gills and scales on fish.

Large bodies of water.

The sound of a metal spoon scraping on a bowl.

justasking111 · 04/03/2024 13:53

When I step on a descending escalater I close my eyes for a few seconds. I spent six weeks in bed once with vestibular neuritis I couldn't stand. Finally I got antibiotics which worked. Physiotherapist then to reorient my vision . Two years after this I finally went down an escalator.

I now have an amusing vision of all of us with the same aversion, driving in convoy along the elevated section of the M5, all of us with eyes fixed strictly front and holding up the traffic!

cerisepanther73 · 04/03/2024 22:41

I don't like walking through long creepy soulless corridors with no windows or breaks in them to see anything at all,

Find them a bit /quite weird.🤔

FuglySweaty · 04/03/2024 22:53

Looking out of a window into the dark, in case someone appears. This actually happened to me once and it scared me SHITLESS. I already had the fear so this was terrifying as I was just thinking about it happening.

scuba diving helmets. and those plants that are like circles with holes in. don’t want to google the name because they make me feel sick

Yes I have the "holes" thing & can't/won't google - Tryptophobia or Trypophobia - it'sConfusedConfusedConfused
Even get twinges when I see displays of the bottom of wine bottle all stuck on a wall together - and m&s had a newspaper ad showing a whole garlic head sliced across the middle🤦🏻‍♀️

The drains/filters in swimming pools. And don't even get me started on the wave machine.

Do not read Chuck Palahniuks swimming pool story in Haunted (i think) OMG

Walking round a lake behind people who are fishing. Always imagine I'll get hooked when they cast or whatever it's called

Stairs with gaps at the back

Raw chicken - especially watching other people touch it

Me tooGrinI always think they're going to cast-off & the hook will embed itself somewhere in my headConfused

Clusters of holes.

Yes🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️Trypto or Trypo phobia (can't google) it's grim

Mother87 · 04/03/2024 23:14

Words · 01/03/2024 14:53

Another vote for clusters of holes. There is a medical term for it, which I've forgotten.

Trypo or Tryptophobia - I can't google obvs because images appear immediately - it's grim

Mother87 · 04/03/2024 23:15

AffIt · 01/03/2024 15:18

The hole thing is called either tryptophobia or trypophobia, I can't quite remember (and as a sufferer, I ain't Googling).

I've just said that about a gazillion times tooGrinGrinI have it & can't google obvs - it's grim

Aquaducts or big railway arches always make me feel a bit panicky, no idea why. If I'm driving an unfamiliar route and unexpectedly have to drive under a big brick, arched bridge it makes my heart hammer and I feel sweaty. I really don't like weirs or canal locks either.

And they often feature in murdery stories tooConfused

Mother87 · 04/03/2024 23:21

Beingboredisgoodforyou · 01/03/2024 18:49

I have trypophobia. It's a disputed condition but I feel disgusted, sick and anxious if I see lots of small holes or bumps. If anyone recalls the old Sanex advert of swaying naked people, that triggers the same reaction. Weird.

Me too - even reading about it🤦🏻‍♀️

Huge white wind turbines in the sea. Reminds me of monster triffids in some scary sci fi.

PinkyFraternity · 05/03/2024 00:26

Thick polyester leggings. I feel I’m in a weird plastic straight jacket.

Someone walking behind me on the stairs.

as a child I was petrified of stairs without risers. They still make me shudder occasionally.

its a marvel I’ve ever made it off the ground floor.

What is a riser?
