Would you work if you didn’t need the money?

I know times are crap right now and we all dream about the big lottery win- but in reality would you really give up work if you didn’t need the money?

Factoring in habit, socialising, “it’s what we do!” Would you honestly resign the next day?

Just thinking after a rubbish day- lighthearted ☺️

I wouldn’t quit - I’d get bored otherwise! But I’d reduce down to only 2 days of work per week, and fill up the rest of the time with hobbies and socialising.

MILsPlates · 27/02/2024 20:52

Yes I do, although it’s not quite the lottery win scenario as it’s my DH who is a high earner so I’d feel bad sitting on my arse. If we had the same level of income without him working, I’d give it up like a shot 😂

K0OLA1D · 27/02/2024 20:53

No. Or I'd do something low stress and really really part time hours which I had an intrest in

aSpanielintheworks · 27/02/2024 20:54

The money I earn is like loose change compared to DH (not a brag, I just earn peanuts!) but would I give it up? No way. I love my job, I love my colleagues, it gives me a structure to my day, it gives me a purpose, and I make a huge difference to lots of very little people.

Hatty65 · 27/02/2024 20:54

Not now. I'm almost 60 and buggered. I would have still worked when younger as I enjoyed my job.

LorlieS · 27/02/2024 20:54

Absolutely.

Justcashnosweets · 27/02/2024 20:55

Absolutely fucking not! I've been working for the past 34 years, I've had enough 🤣

plominoagain · 27/02/2024 20:57

I wouldn't wait until the next day... I'd be out of there as fast as my merlin purple RS6 would take me. And if I won the motherload , I'd take my whole team with me .

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 27/02/2024 20:57

No absolutely not.
I work full time in a demanding job. Never get a rest so if I won millions I would pack in straight away.
I would love to be able to spend my time doing exactly what I wanted.

flowertoday · 27/02/2024 20:58

I used to think I would want to work whatever. That work is an important part of my identity etc. But lately ( I work in the public sector where things are not so great just now ) really not at all.
Maybe just two days a week - that would be great

DelilahBucket · 27/02/2024 20:58

I run my own business and I would like to see how far I could take it with a cash investment, so yes I would carry on working, if only as an experiment. I believe working gives you purpose and of course not needing to work financially gives you the option to do what you want rather than being stuck in a job you hate. Even if I wasn't working for monetary gain, I would still volunteer.

Needmorelego · 27/02/2024 20:59

I never understand those who say they'd be bored. You'd be a millionaire. You can use that money to fill your time doing whatever you want to keep you from being bored 😂

WandaWonder · 27/02/2024 20:59

Don't need the money as I am financially independent or because I am financially reliant on another person?

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 27/02/2024 20:59

I'd stop immediately. But buy a beautiful huge old house and spend my time renovating it so I wasn't just idling the days away.

SantaBarbaraMonica · 27/02/2024 21:01

I would work still. But would go to town on my holidays and spending! Knowing that if I blew it all, I still have my monthly income coming in.

Flowersinthewateringcan · 27/02/2024 21:02

I would give up work in a heartbeat if I could (and I only work part time as it is).

I’m 51 and have had enough of work (sadly can’t retire yet).

If I had enough money I’d wake at 8-9am, have a leisurely breakfast, walk the dog then have lunch out at a nice cafe or garden centre and spend my days pottering.

That’s all I want to do right now….potter.
If I had the money, work can go fuck itself! (I’ve had a shit day too op).

mrsfollowill · 27/02/2024 21:02

I'd be out of the door like a shot if I won big! I've worked for 33 years and have had enough- I'd be off travelling in style while I'm still just about young enough to enjoy it.. My boss says she would keep working - she does genuinely love her job- me not so much!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 27/02/2024 21:03

Yes, I would carry on working. I'd hire a couple of assistants though to do the bits o don't like!!

Garlickit · 27/02/2024 21:03

Yeah. I think humans are driven to work - and it very much depends on your definition of 'work'. If you mean 'do something all day, every day, to a schedule set by someone else' - then, no, and I'm glad I don't have to do that any more.

But with money to outsource everything I dislike doing and hire facilitators for my creative & discovery interests - hell, yeah! I'd be permanently fascinated, inspired and productive.

Tarquina · 27/02/2024 21:05

This has happened to me in real life. I have not needed to work for the past 20 years, and yet I have been more hard-working in that time than before. I work extremely hard on private projects sometimes getting up at four or five in the morning and working right through to a nine o'clock at night. I never did that when I was working for an employer haha it was eight hours and then I would walk away. I now have enough money to live on for the rest of my life without ever having to earn from working and yet I choose to work seven days a week at least 12 hours a day.

Bubblebait · 27/02/2024 21:05

I would quit my job but volunteer somewhere I really wanted to instead!

TwylaSands · 27/02/2024 21:05

I wouldn't even work my notice. Id pack up my stuff and be out of the door immediately. Theyd be looking at the steam still coming off my cup of tea and a half eaten biscuit and wondering where I am.

but after travelling to all the places on my wish list Id look for a work from home job or start tinkering with my own business. Volunteer and network.

Dacadactyl · 27/02/2024 21:06

Yeah I'd still work cos I'd get fat and bored at home all day with nothing to do.

I'd probably become a personal trainer with my main focus being myself and get pick up the odd client if it fitted in with the rest of my schedule.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 27/02/2024 21:06

If I won the euromillions and could live off the proceeds then yes I would absolutely quit working, as in send an email saying 'sorry but effective immediately I quit, laptop is in a box with a courier on its way back to you, bye'.

I would volunteer for causes that mean something to me, I'd have projects that keep me busy and I'd enjoy the hell out of having the freedom to travel whenever I fancied.

YouTulip · 27/02/2024 21:07

I’d do it unpaid.
