Would you work if you didn’t need the money?

I know times are crap right now and we all dream about the big lottery win- but in reality would you really give up work if you didn’t need the money?

Factoring in habit, socialising, “it’s what we do!” Would you honestly resign the next day?

Just thinking after a rubbish day- lighthearted ☺️

Just finished a 12 hour shift and my mind kept thinking about the couple that won 60 million on the euro millions last week, I'm very jealous and would love to not have to work.

fluffi · 27/02/2024 21:55

I would quit immediately!

Loads of things I could do instead go on holidays, exercise more, play more sport, study another degree, learn musical instruments, go to the theatre, opera, plays! See friends!

PieAndLattes · 27/02/2024 21:57

I’d leave and set up my own business/charity. In my dream world I’d have a network of outstanding GCSE and A Level/apprenticeship tutors free or at very low cost to any kid eligible for free school meals who wanted to use them. I’d get those kids the best tutors and the best careers support, because a decent, well funded, education should be a right, not a privilege.

BrandyandGinger · 27/02/2024 21:59

If I won the lottery I'd open a small independent bookshop and have good staff working there and work there myself part time. I'd keep busy by organising events in the shop, like book clubs and having authors in to speak. It would be wonderful.

SouthLondonMum22 · 27/02/2024 22:02

If it meant relying financially on DH, absolutely not. If we're talking about a massive lottery win, I still don't think I'd quit because I don't just work for the money, I get so many benefits from working.

WeightoftheWorld · 27/02/2024 22:05

So lottery win really depends on the size firstly. But DH and I have extensive dreamy conversations about this sort of thing and I wouldn't want to tell anyone about such a win with the possible exception of my DPs. Or I would tell people we won x amount and spent it all on a nice big house - which is the first thing I'd do with a large sum of money. So I probably would continue in my job as usual tbh just for that reason. I already only work 3 days a week. Or at least some sort of job, maybe I'd take a pay cut and do something a bit different as wouldnt need the money but I don't earn much above minimum wage anyway. DH would definitely continue work too as he has a vocation as a HCP but he would reduce his hours further in such a situation.

clothearedpotatohead · 27/02/2024 22:08

Definitely not! I’d get bored otherwise. But I’m self-employed so I would use it to invest in training, coach, mentoring, etc. I’d also get on with a masters and do up my office 😎

MagnificentHats · 27/02/2024 22:35

Hell no would I keep working if I didn't have to. I would be gone like a shot.

There are many other things I would rather be doing if I had the time and money:
travel by train and boat across the world on a long rambling trip with no real schedule,
spend a few months in Japan on a language immersion course,
do a culinary course in Le Cordon Bleu in Paris,
go on an expedition to Antartica to see the penguins.

And when I get bored in between those adventures, I would buy an old house and renovate it, with a bit of land to grow veggies and keep some animals, and also do some local things like joining some pottery and woodwork classes, volunteer in a local animal shelter, test out new recipes etc.

I would definitely not be bored. There is so much fun and interesting stuff to do that does not involve working.

headache · 27/02/2024 22:40

Absolutely not! I’m a teacher and things are terrible in school just now for a variety of reasons.

I would travel when I wanted to and do charity work. I’d have lots of rescue animals too.

dothehokeycokey · 27/02/2024 22:48

I'm self employed and run and work in my business so when I'm not physically doing my job I'm running the business so it's full on with teenagers pets dh and house oh and parents etc so I would drop down to two days a week purely because of the social aspect and I do love what I do but I could seriously fill the rest of my time so if never be bored

Apolloneuro · 27/02/2024 23:04

I’m 60 and don’t financially need to work but I still do, part time. I enjoy it.

Tatonka · 27/02/2024 23:09

Not a chance. Maybe if I had nothing better to do, I'd maybe do 10 hours a week, just for fun. Although the novelty would probably wear off in which case maybe some volunteering or something

changedagain67543 · 27/02/2024 23:10

I would work but in something far less stressful and maybe three mornings a week. Knowing I could just walk out if it ever got horrible would be the key for me but I like being busy and feeling like I am achieving or contributing.

cardibach · 27/02/2024 23:10

Needmorelego · 27/02/2024 20:59

I never understand those who say they'd be bored. You'd be a millionaire. You can use that money to fill your time doing whatever you want to keep you from being bored 😂

I’m almost completely retired and really not very well off and I’m never bored. There’s loads to do! If I had money I’d just travel more and spend less time fiddling with budgets…

OutOfTheHouse · 27/02/2024 23:14

I’d stop working in an instant.

I’d like to do something like volunteer at a National Trust property or the like.

Flyeeeeer · 27/02/2024 23:14

Yes I would. I think it is important to share the skills I have with society (imagine if nobody did), and set my children a good example.

DorisDoesDoncaster · 27/02/2024 23:16

I would be more worried about my boss who I think protects me and the other team from a lot of pressure that goes on above our pay grades.

So I would not dream of dropping him in the proverbial by quitting straight away, as he has been very good to the team and I.

if he were an a-hole (like the boss before him) then yes I would quit straight away.

Lilacanemone · 27/02/2024 23:16

Yes, I would resign immediately and start the mammoth task of sorting out the house and garden which are neglected at the moment. Then I might read a book or two.

RobinEllacotStrike · 27/02/2024 23:18

I'm tired. I'd stop working ft for sure.

I would do more volunteering though

SquareCrumpets · 27/02/2024 23:18

I could retire now. I'm looking for a job at the moment. I've realised I need more intellectual challenges or I end up lounging all day.

Teasie123 · 27/02/2024 23:18

Hell NO!!🤭🤭🤭

Ohiwish12 · 27/02/2024 23:20

I currently work in for the LA SEND team and i do love my job to a certain extent but hate some of the red tape and "thresholds" that the LA set. If I won the lottery I would go and work/volunteeer for a charity/iass service to be on the "other side" to hopefully help families get what they deserve on a part time basis to balance my own leisure time!

JennyJenny8675309 · 27/02/2024 23:22

I’d leave the office keys on my desk and burn tyre rubber racing out of the car park. There is fulfillment in many things other than employment. I would volunteer with animal rescues, etc.

frenchfancy81 · 27/02/2024 23:26

I work as a teacher part-time now, through choice. We'd be fine if I didn't work but I get a lot of satisfaction and a sense of purpose from it. I also know I'm a good one and would feel a bit wasted if I didn't do it. Have 18 years of experience and was full-time until our son came along.

Trifecta · 27/02/2024 23:26

That’s what I am doing right now! I retired from teaching in 2020.
