Would you work if you didn’t need the money?

I know times are crap right now and we all dream about the big lottery win- but in reality would you really give up work if you didn’t need the money?

Factoring in habit, socialising, “it’s what we do!” Would you honestly resign the next day?

Just thinking after a rubbish day- lighthearted ☺️

Absolutely I would jack in my job, yes.

I mostly enjoy my job and have worked hard to build a career, but I’m late 40s now and I’m tired of the grind. I could quite happily fill my time with other productive endeavours Grin.

MermaidMummy06 · 27/02/2024 21:20

No. I've just returned to work after a few years SAHP and hate it. The lack of time to do anything. I can't even watch an episode of 'my' tv shows or get to the supermarket until the weekend as everyone has stuff on every night, except me. I'm also unwell but can no longer take the time to recover - just have to keep powering through.

I'd use the time, if money wasn't an issue, to do things for me I've never been able to afford to do - both time & money. Gym, nice lunches, find a hobby. Once DC are olde6id volunteer a bit, and travel.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 27/02/2024 21:21

Errr no.

Exactly same for me at 52. All of my friends want hybrid or wfh if possible.

FrenchFancie · 27/02/2024 21:22

Yes I would.
i was lucky in that my husband got a very good job abroad, with free housing and utilities. With the money we earned from renting out our flat in the uk, we didn’t need me to work. I spent 4 years lying on the beach, doing a masters, riding my horse and drinking coffee with friends - by the end of it I was going spare with boredom. I was depressed and clapping on weight.
i took a part time job working in an English language school and became so much happier. I only worked 20 hours a week, teen time, so still had buckets of time, and we didn’t need the wage, but my god it improved my mental health.

i now work longer hours and need to earn more (we moved back to the uk post brexit) but still know I would always have some kind of job to keep me sane and happy.

Oblomov24 · 27/02/2024 21:23

God no. Most probably wouldn't. If you won £66 million on the lottery you might: go travelling, buy a business to keep you employed, pensions, dividends. You wouldn't work, unless it was something you particularly enjoyed.

MsCamilla · 27/02/2024 21:25

After the day I've had, I wouldn't even resign, I'd just disappear.
Hopefully tomorrow is better.

TheChosenTwo · 27/02/2024 21:25

I choose to work. We could manage fine without my wage but I like earning my
own money (and spending it all too!) - I have had over a decade not working when bringing up the dc and absolutely loved it, wouldn’t be bored without my job as I would have loads that I could do but it is important to me to show my girls especially that women should provide their own financial security and not solely rely on anyone else.
I enjoy my job and have great colleagues.
When I’m 50 (11 years away) I will drop my hours to part time and hopefully have some grandchildren near enough to spend regular time with!
Saying that though maybe I’d just think fuck it and leave and run off into the sunshine…
If I won the lottery at 50 I’d stop working.
Unlikely as I don’t play it 😂

Efemail · 27/02/2024 21:26

I don't work only through circumstance and no I wouldn't stay in any job if I didn't have to!

ChicagoBears · 27/02/2024 21:26

If I won the lottery, I wouldn’t work but I’d volunteer. If I had a rich DH I’d work as I wouldn’t want to be reliant on his money.

Evenmoretired44 · 27/02/2024 21:30

I wouldn’t give up work as it is a vocation and I find it fascinating, but I would work much fewer hours than I do currently and take more unpaid leave so I could have the whole summer holidays off with my family.

LizzeyBenett · 27/02/2024 21:31

If I won the lotto i would quit my job straight away, but I'd replace it with something I love that I'm passionate about like rescuing animal's maybe, life's to short to not do what you love if you can afford to and let's face it how many of us will ever get to be financially free and do what we truly love .

sotired1234 · 27/02/2024 21:36

Hell no.
There was a time when I was much younger when I loved working and worked loads of unpaid hours and volunteered for all the overtime and gave up my days off but I was young and stupid. My older and much more tired self would quit instantly.

Blakessevenrideagain · 27/02/2024 21:40

I'd be out the door faster than the word P45. 🤣

So much I would love to do, I could easily fill my life.

Tumbleweed101 · 27/02/2024 21:42

No. I've worked since I was 16 and I'm now approaching 50. I'd give up work immediately if I could and would still have enough to pay the basics.

I wouldn't be bored. There's so much I'd love to be doing outside of working and I feel trapped having to work just to survive. I don't earn enough to do much else.

IWanderedLonely · 27/02/2024 21:44

Yes, in a heartbeat. It's what I dream of.

Melodyxo · 27/02/2024 21:46

My teaching job, yes, 100%, absolutely, goodbye, you’ll never see me again etc etc

My little side business, no 😊 I genuinely enjoy it and wouldn’t do it for the money or I’d just run it and advertise that all money now goes to charity from it

Cotswoldbee · 27/02/2024 21:47

Nope, would give up work and retire.....
Oh wait, I did that last year! 😉

Went at 57 and am loving life. OH (56) now works 2-days a week and will be giving even that up this year.
Financially comfortable, we do what we want, when we want, wherever we want.
The thought of staying at work just to fill the days, no thank you.

twingiraffes · 27/02/2024 21:50

WandaWonder · 27/02/2024 20:59

Don't need the money as I am financially independent or because I am financially reliant on another person?

The OP is musing about winning the lottery, so I'm guessing financially independent.

Maverickess · 27/02/2024 21:50

Nope.
Although if I tried I'd likely get sacked because without the threat of destitution over me I'm likely to start telling people exactly what I think and by people I mean customers, and that's not going to go down well, lottery win or not.
So I'd quit, although I love the team I work with and so would throw them a great big party first.

I'd have no such problems as getting bored, there would be a dog for each day of the week and two for Sunday's and lots and lots of places to go and explore with them.

SwordToFlamethrower · 27/02/2024 21:50

Volunteer, learn new skills. Deffo not work. Urgh!

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 27/02/2024 21:51

Not in my current job, but would definitely work on my business. It’s a hobby that I make a bit of money from and would love to do it full-time.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 27/02/2024 21:51

No I wouldn’t do my current job

I would definitely volunteer though

Echobelly · 27/02/2024 21:52

I think I might as I just wouldn't know what to do with myself all day otherwise - maybe I'd find a part time voluntary thing to do instead though.

PurBal · 27/02/2024 21:53

I’d probably do charity work
