DSS selling condoms to classmates

Just after some opinions really. DSS is 15, in year 10. We've found out he's been buying condoms and selling them for £1 each to his mates. His mums not concerned. Should we stop him? I'm not sure how I feel about it.

That boy will go far.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/02/2024 16:05

If he is making money on it then good for him. He's hardly forcing young people to have sex. At that age we used to blow up condoms behind the garages.

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/02/2024 16:05

Well done him 😁

Yes, he's bulk buying them to sell at a profit. Also adding an extra charge for any specific requests (eg, ribbed, flavoured).

Good for him. He’s showing initiative, working towards his own independence and promoting safe sex.

Why do you have a problem with it? Would you have the same problem if he were selling sweets?

I've absolutely no idea if I should have a problem with it or not. My DC are much younger so I've no experience of these thing.

I suppose my concern is that school or parents find out and he gets in trouble.

He sounds like a good little salesman! At least he’s encouraging his mates to be safe. (School might not approve though, if he’s selling them on school grounds).

WarningOfGails · 23/02/2024 16:09

That’s hilarious. And far better than the kids I know selling vapes!

AutumnCrow · 23/02/2024 16:10

My DC used to be showered with free ones at their schools, and/or given leaflets about placing free online orders with various charities and sexual health initiatives. There was also a free supply from a local one-stop shop for teenagers, and at a local health clinic (as in, boxes on the counter).

I did say to him, don't school have a free supply and he said the lads don't want the embarrassment or lecture that comes with it.

good on him

WarningOfGails · 23/02/2024 16:11

Seriously though.
If this were my child? Not sure.
think I would probably turn a bit of a blind eye, but explain to them they might get into trouble if school find out. Kids this age can access condoms from health centres etc, they aren’t an age restricted product…

Willnoonethinkofthebirds · 23/02/2024 16:12

Why would he get in trouble? He isn't breaking any laws encouraging safe sex. And as long as it is between consenting teens of the same age, while technically underage, no one gives a toss. He is hardly forcing anyone into either buying or using them!

Seems entrepreneurial to me.

C1N1C · 23/02/2024 16:14

I did this too. Made quite a bit of money. So many kids are shy and won't go to the GUM clinic to get the free ones, or buy them over the counter. Better to buy from friends than not use at all.

faustus5 · 23/02/2024 16:20

His difficulty will be when the school find out and he has to have an embarrassing conversation with the headteacher about condoms. Years ago DS1 ran his own mini chocolate business in school based on the same principle, much to my concern. Mumsnet said 'don't worry about it, loosen up' ie many of the comments above. I tried to just leave him to it having expressed some disapproval that it was against the school rules and his risk. He got a telling off in the heads office when he was eventually (and inevitably) caught. Though at least he only had to discuss chocolate and not condoms. (I guess he will know many of the secrets of the year group won't he!)

Gcsunnyside23 · 23/02/2024 16:27

What an entrepreneur 😆 the boy will go far, saw a gap in the market and went for it. Plus prompting safe sex so it's a win. It's on him if he gets in trouble at school but any complaints from parents then tell them it's their own child they need to deal with and thank your ss for the lack of grandkids

IggOrEgg · 23/02/2024 16:30

Little beauty 😂 sensible kid, I hope he keeps his entrepreneurial streak!

Damnloginpopup · 23/02/2024 16:31

Mates

Haha

High five to Little Johnny. 😁

CeeceeBloomingdale · 23/02/2024 16:32

Get him on the apprentice, I'm impressed

Brrrrrrrrrritscold · 23/02/2024 16:33

He will go far, my DS at 11 was selling sweets at school at a huge mark up, he now has a successful eBay business, he’s only 15. I don’t think he’s doing anything wrong.

VictoriaPink · 23/02/2024 16:33

Honestly, I think this is awesome.

He's not selling dodgy, harmful goods - quite the opposite. Nobody wants teenagers to be too embarrassed to buy a condom, and this is probably their least embarrassing opportunity to do so.

He's also spotted a brilliant business opportunity.

I would love to know what the shopkeeper thinks about the teenage boy who keeps buying 50 assorted condoms a week, though. He must be a legend in his local branch of Superdrug 😂

Beezknees · 23/02/2024 16:45

Brilliant! Might suggest this to my 16yo DS to get some extra cash 😂

Fair play to him. Safe sex and he's showing I initiative. I can't see anything wrong with this.

MinnieMotor · 23/02/2024 16:49

I expect the school to take a dim view of caught but I think he's showing initiative personally 🤣

OttolenghiSimple · 23/02/2024 16:51

Tell him to get the free ones from the family planning clinic, cut down on overheads.

I wouldn’t be any more worried about this than if he was selling sweets. No one is going to be having sex as a result of him selling them a condom.
