DSS selling condoms to classmates

Just after some opinions really. DSS is 15, in year 10. We've found out he's been buying condoms and selling them for £1 each to his mates. His mums not concerned. Should we stop him? I'm not sure how I feel about it.

OP posts:

I remember a girl who used to buy cans of coke and Chubb a Chubb lolly's on the way to school to sell at a profit. He's providing a service, chances are teens might not want the outlay of a full box, or the "embarrassment" of getting condoms and that's his usp.

As long as it's discrete I think it's fine. If it turned into a massive circus and a demonstration of who did I bang behind the shed at lunchtime by all means stop him them but as long as it's just a little side number go for it.

BigPussyEnergy · 23/02/2024 20:27

I don’t know how many condoms you lot think he’s selling but I’m fairly certain he won’t be going over his tax threshold 😂. Jeez, the kid is being business minded and saving his peers from teenage pregnancy and STDs. Good for him.

DetOliviaBenson · 23/02/2024 20:29

Delait291 · 23/02/2024 16:06

Yes, he's bulk buying them to sell at a profit. Also adding an extra charge for any specific requests (eg, ribbed, flavoured).

This is brilliant, he sounds ace! 😂

is he paying taxes on the profit ? HMRC might want to have a word

but otherwise he identified a business opportunity (horny teenagers needing condoms vs the shame of getting them from adults) and went for it, good on him

Seriously? How much do you think he's making? I highly doubt it's more than the £12k income tax threshold!

The personal allowance for income tax is £12,500. The start point for VAT is £85,000 turnover. I don’t think HMRC are going to be as interested as you think.

Where do you buy condoms in bulk?
(Misses point of thread)

Thank you OP and DSS. I've had some suboptimal health news and that's given me a much needed giggle.

Fair play as long as he isn't nicking his stock. A boy at my school was given a special head's award for his entrepreneurship selling snacks.

Babymamamama · 23/02/2024 20:46

Cash isn’t even allowed at my DC secondary school so any sales schemes are shut down pretty quickly. Regardless of the merch. School shouldn’t be a marketplace.

Willnoonethinkofthebirds · 23/02/2024 21:05

Sureaseggs44 · 23/02/2024 19:52

Um he is running a business that’s not registered for cash in hand . Enterprising but not exactly innocent.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

He is so unlikely to reach a personal tax liability flogging condoms to his mates behind the bike sheds. But thank you for the Friday night laugh.

Condoms are given out as part of sex Ed lessons in secondary schools. This means they are part of a discussion about sex and many issues such as sexual health, concern and contraception. Not quite the same as a teenager flogging them out of his school bag to anyone with a quid. The essonne are also age related so the lessons for a 15 year old are not the same as for an 11 year old. Condoms are not given out to 11 year okds. I doubt the teen here has age restrictions.

cansu · 23/02/2024 21:33

We are not talking about what girls or boys choose to use as contraception. Girls may not wish to have a safe space at school sexualised by talk about sex and condoms outside of sex Ed lessons .

Disturbia81 · 23/02/2024 21:35

Just sad that they're already doing that.

Frangipanyoul8r · 23/02/2024 22:10

🤣🤣🤣 dying at the suggestion he might have to file a tax return. I wonder what his business plan is for year on year growth?

My DC used to be showered with free ones at their schools, and/or given leaflets about placing free online orders with various charities and sexual health initiatives. There was also a free supply from a local one-stop shop for teenagers, and at a local health clinic (as in, boxes on the counter).

This. What has gone wrong that teens are buying condoms instead of getting them free from Brook?

I don't know what has gone wrong but our young hero is capitalising. I wish him well.

He's 15 and selling them to his mates. There's absolutely nothing about him selling them to 11 year olds; I don't know where that came from. The kids he's selling to will have had that sex ed - they will know they can go to Brook or wherever and get them, just as they could ask their older brother to buy them from the supermarket.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 23/02/2024 22:31

From a "not mum" or "not step mum" angle I think it's hilarious. And, I'd prefer my DS to buy a condom off him to use rather than end up a young father or catching something because he was too embarrassed to get one of the free ones.

As a mum, I'd be a little more concerned.

I'd be sitting him down and having a birds and bees chat - just in case he's seen as a bit of an 'expert'.

LimeViewer · 23/02/2024 22:39

@cansu @Newsenmum there are no age restrictions on condoms.
13 year olds can buy them from boots or tesco etc.
When given out at school or in health centres there is no specific talk given. They are free to take as many as you want no questions asked.

LeSoleil · 23/02/2024 22:45

He is selling Mates to mates so they can practice mating?

You win the thread.

liveforsummer · 23/02/2024 22:49

This is funny 🤣 I like his ingenuity. At that age though we were all fairly aware we could get them for free in various places so he's doing well to make some money from it. Is probably a legend among peers too (most of whom won't even be having sex). Good for him 😁

Mindovermatter247 · 23/02/2024 22:50

Every school has a kid like this, from experience they make a lot of money. Sounds like he’s not harming anyone. So I wouldn’t worry.

Lesina · 23/02/2024 22:55

Entrepreneur right there. I’d ecourage it :)
