North Yorkshire forever home location!

Hi mumsnet, I've posted about moving before and am planning on moving later this year to the North Yorkshire area. Work will be in York (or possibly Leeds). My son has ASD and needs decent public transport options for some independence as he gets older.

Can you recommend me somewhere for us to live?

We like:

Off road walks with a bit of variety from the house (or nearby);

Good bus or train links;

Within 30 mins of decent shops / culture for a mooch and to do and take part in stuff. Son loves having a go at theatre.

Ideally no more than an hour from the coast as currently live 500m from a beach and scared of being landlocked ...

Is there such a unicorn?

Why not York? Or Harrogate?

Objectrelations · 22/02/2024 22:46

Ah !! Yes, good point 😀 Budget !! My budget is £375,000 max so that is the limiting factor?

@Badbadbunny coujd you recommend some areas of York or Harrogate that are affordable (and nice) - if they exist?

York ticks your boxes and depending on size of house you could find something in a decent area. What are you thinking of re schools? Do you need primary or secondary atm?

Objectrelations · 22/02/2024 22:58

@LittleMy77 Thanks - only need college or work experience as he is now 17 - so no catchment related issues thankfully!

How about Malton? It’s a short hop on the train to York and about 40mins to the coast. Quick drive to walks on the moors and Dalby Forest too.
Pickering also, nicer than Malton imo, but no train, although you can drive to Malton station.

Imstillawake · 22/02/2024 23:00

I was just coming on to say Malton too.

YorkshireIndie · 22/02/2024 23:01

Northallerton, Malton or Easingwold

Tallisker · 22/02/2024 23:10

Another vote for Malton. Bus and train to Scarborough, York and Leeds. Great food market. Independent shops. Lots of lovely walks in the Howardian Hills AONB.

Objectrelations · 22/02/2024 23:13

@TammyOne @Imstillawake @YorkshireIndie
Ooh. Need to look at Easingwold and Northallerton - haven't been to either.

I visited Malton and didn't love it but couldn't put my finger on why. The layout seemed odd - probably didn't help it was raining hard and December!! Is Norton nice on the other side of the river?

Objectrelations · 22/02/2024 23:14

Hmm maybe need to give Malton another chance!!

OP posts:
Tallisker · 22/02/2024 23:15

Norton is the cheap seats, all right but not as nice.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/02/2024 23:18

My DD lives in Norton, so I may be biased, but she's got a lovely, big, three bedroomed home with an ENORMOUS garden, for which they paid £300, 000 last year. Lovely safe cul de sac, easy walk to the shops and station (SIL works in York) and they love it. They moved from York, which didn't feel safe when the hen parties and races were on, and made a killing house-wise!

EwwSprouts · 22/02/2024 23:23

Thirsk. 20 mins on the train from York. An hour to Scarborough.

totorostoes · 22/02/2024 23:31

Knaresborough would be worth checking out, it’s very pretty and has good bus service and is on the leeds - york line

TammyOne · 22/02/2024 23:53

You know what, having suggested Malton I actually must confess I don’t love it either! 😁It just seemed to tick all the boxes. I do like Pickering though.
Ripon is nice- amazing Nidderdale countryside on one side, NYork moors to the other, but no train to York.
Do you want to be in a city though with a teen? Most of the towns in North Yorkshire are pretty dullsville for young people.

Objectrelations · 22/02/2024 23:54

Ha ha @TammyOne yes I know it does tick the boxes but ...

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/02/2024 23:57

Not Pickering, it's a bit grim. Also the transport links are dire.

I'd think you need to be somewhere there's a train station at least. The buses can take HOURS to get anywhere (I live near Kirkbymoorside, and it's an hour to Scarborough on the bus, well over an hour to York, and you have to go to Pickering and change buses to get to Malton just to get a train). It's fabulous out here for adults, ALL the wonderful walks and the countryside and horse riding territory, but boring as fuck for kids (I know, all my kids grew up here and I spent what felt like my entire life in the car ferrying them around).

Objectrelations · 22/02/2024 23:57

I need to be close enough to a city or big town to not be bored. But close, or edges perhaps - not in!

Knaresborough and Thirsk look like good options .

cakeorwine · 22/02/2024 23:59

York.

It has city life but it's not too busy. Good transport links - it's about an hour to the coast depending in A64 traffic.

Other places suggested are quite small.

(I have lived in York and North Yorkshire for most of my life)

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 00:01

Can't wait to visit again when the weather improves and look around some of these

Knaresborough is nice but not a lot to do - and it's quite far to the coast.
Thirsk is small - how are you commuting as it can be busy getting to Leeds and York from Thirsk?

Honestly - the best thing is to rent somewhere up here and get to know the area

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 00:02

@cakeorwine
Any suggestions for where in York good for walks?

York is perfectly safe.

CatLevelCare · 23/02/2024 00:04

I love York, and it ticks all your boxes.
Good, regular trains, too.
