North Yorkshire forever home location!

Hi mumsnet, I've posted about moving before and am planning on moving later this year to the North Yorkshire area. Work will be in York (or possibly Leeds). My son has ASD and needs decent public transport options for some independence as he gets older.

Can you recommend me somewhere for us to live?

We like:

Off road walks with a bit of variety from the house (or nearby);

Good bus or train links;

Within 30 mins of decent shops / culture for a mooch and to do and take part in stuff. Son loves having a go at theatre.

Ideally no more than an hour from the coast as currently live 500m from a beach and scared of being landlocked ...

Is there such a unicorn?

Skipton an hour from the coast? Which coast? By helicopter, perhaps 🤣

It is nice though.

But not near the coast.

Unless you want to go to Morecambe? Only 1 hr 15

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 19:20

@HailMary1988 that house you linked to is absolutely gorgeous!

Blackpool or Lytham would be about an hour ?
Google say 1hr 9 mins on a Friday evening- so could be done in less.

Skipton to York is a sod of a journey through

You might think so. They thought differently after my SIL had some problems with drunks.

Do you live there @cakeorwine ?

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 19:24

I think Skipton is just too far !!

Hmm so Strensall - lots of footpaths on that common on the OS maps. Need to have a wander there then too.

@cakeorwine Stockton on the Forest being long and narrow - is that good or bad I couldn't tell what you thought?

Would you considered popping into the East Riding and look at Pocklington?

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads
Can you tell me about Pocklington?

@TammyOne @Imstillawake @YorkshireIndie
Ooh. Need to look at Easingwold and Northallerton - haven't been to either.

I visited Malton and didn't love it but couldn't put my finger on why. The layout seemed odd - probably didn't help it was raining hard and December!! Is Norton nice on the other side of the river?

I know Easingwold really well and i love it but the Sunday bus service has just been removed and the last Mon-Sat bus back from York is now at 6pm or something. Its ridiculous. If your DS is not the in position of learning to drive in the future, i think he would find the public transport options quite limiting.

Imstillawake · 23/02/2024 19:29

Sorry I don't have much more to add on Malton. It ticks all of your boxes but I agree it can be a bit meh.

As a PP said, would East Yorkshire be an option? Lots of towns much closer to the coast, within an hours drive of York.

Blackpool is an hour and half by car from Skipton.

I drive through Stockton on the Forest on a weekly basis and never ever see anyone about! It's almost sinisterly quiet (we joke that nobody actually lives there and the place is just for show.)

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 19:34

@YorkshireTeaCup oh drat that is such an early last bus! Unfortunately he has no road sense. He can cross roads at crossings or if they are quiet but can't ride a bike or scooter etc. So unlikely to drive in the future unless that really changes with further maturity.

I don't know! Indoors, presumably. Normally around here you see people in the villages, weeding their gardens or riding their horses, but Sutton never seems to have anyone out and about. I'd suppose that, given the cost of many of the houses, that everyone works and I'm driving through during the working day, so everyone is at work. But I don't know where they hide the toddlers/dogwalkers/elderly....

What about Yarm?
45 minutes on train to York, direct from Yarm station.
Lovely theatre, Yarm Auditorium.
Brilliant walks close by, very close to Cleveland way with Roseberry topping, Captain Cooks monument etc.
Great High street with a range of shops and restaurants.
You would get a nice 4 bed for your budget.
25 minute ish drive to Saltburn beach, the train goes there too.
it’s a lovely town. We love living here.

Selby is variable- it has massive social deprivation

The problem is that Pocklington, Malton, Tadcaster, Easingwold, Selby are all pretty rubbish for both transport and employment (well there is the bacon factory at Malton)

Rural isolation for teens and young people is a major issue.

I would rent for a while- get to know the area and see how it goes. If you dont like it then rent in another area until you find the right one

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 19:49

Everyone in Stockton knows the Forest is in their nice reasonably priced house judging by the ones on right move!

Roseberry Topping is nowhere near Yarm. You need a car journey of at least 30 mins- probably 40.

Trains from Yarm station are not that regular - 1 an hour and the drive to York would be pretty awful as you are approaching from the worst side.

Roseberry topping is a really easy drive from Yarm, 23minutes from my house. We go a couple of times a month.
Anyway, just a suggestion of a nice town that ticks a lot of the boxes.
(trains are hourly to York)

Getting out and through Yarm can take that long though? It is not a traffic friendly place. I used to work in Yarm and live very very close to Roseberry Topping! (and that was the Levendale side of Yarm- the other side would have been worse)

Look at Heworth; 1 mile from the city centre, depending on which end you live it’s got a library, cafes, post office etc, decent bus service, easy to get to monks cross which has bowling, cinema etc and 10min drive from the A64(ring road) takes less than an hour to get to the coast and there’s a direct bus that goes there

£375k won't go far in Heworth.

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 20:02

Thanks @TraitorHarryFortheWin i've seen lots of glorious pictures of Roseberry Topping - what a local walk to have ❤️
