North Yorkshire forever home location!

Hi mumsnet, I've posted about moving before and am planning on moving later this year to the North Yorkshire area. Work will be in York (or possibly Leeds). My son has ASD and needs decent public transport options for some independence as he gets older.

Can you recommend me somewhere for us to live?

We like:

Off road walks with a bit of variety from the house (or nearby);

Good bus or train links;

Within 30 mins of decent shops / culture for a mooch and to do and take part in stuff. Son loves having a go at theatre.

Ideally no more than an hour from the coast as currently live 500m from a beach and scared of being landlocked ...

Is there such a unicorn?

@LunaNorth @cakeorwine
Stamford Bridge sounds a bit flood-y as well as traffic-y
I for one will be pleased when we have gone full electric as a society!!

I definitely don't want to live in Skipton or Scarborough although I appreciate the suggestions.

@cakeorwine that rental looks decent. I need to sell my house here first so planning to move in the summer/autumn as long as that sells.

Are you moving a relatively long way? You say it's a small island - so I guess you are moving a reasonable distance.

Yorkshire is a lovely place to live - and it's so easy to get to so many beautiful places - traffic isn't too bad and there's the coast, cities and country to explore.

Diorling · 24/02/2024 10:22

There are some great areas up there and I’ve lived in a lot of them. We lived in the Bilton area of Harrogate - it was lovely and quiet, near to town, and is still reasonably priced. Nice walks around too. York is gorgeous but expensive. Leeds has some lovely areas but they aren’t cheap. Best wishes with wherever you find.

cheapskatemum · 24/02/2024 10:32

Haven't rtwt, but when you say "no more than an hour from the coast", bear in mind any journey to the coast will take way longer in the summer holidays. My Dad has lived in Sinnington, Dringhouses (York) & Thirsk and I have/have had relatives who live in Pickering, Scalby and Scarborough. I would recommend Pickering out of all of these.

There are "back" ways - but yes, having a mixture of dual carriageway and normal A roads can be a pain.

I love the back way to Scarborough.

Redlarge · 24/02/2024 10:42

Northallerton, Richmond, Ripon would be my choices.

Objectrelations · 24/02/2024 10:46

@cakeorwine
I'm moving from Jersey.

I have also considered south coast (near Chichester, near Exeter) and around Bristol but discounted them for various reasons.

Every time I come to North Yorkshire I just get a really good feeling about it plus there are job opportunities in my field, low crime rates, diverse cultural offering in the cities, accessible coast and countryside and what I hope is a sense of coherent identity which I value and also bring as someone who loves to have a sense of pride in where they live and wants to contribute to a sense of community.

You can always tell someone lives in Yorkshire.
Because they normally tell you it very quickly!

I just hope you're ready for the North Yorkshire climate. It can be lovely - like today but it can also be a bit damp and foggy. Something to do with being low lying and having the Ouse near us.

Objectrelations · 24/02/2024 11:09

I know the climate is one thing i'm nervous about.

Having said that it's been raining solidly here since the beginning of November.
And. constant. gales.

But the summers are hot and sunny so might have to dust the SAD lamp off!

I'd go for Strensall or Haxby personally.
I'm sitting in a cafe in Haxby right now actually!
Still feel part of York, can get to Strensall Common or Castle Howard v easily for walks and jogs, beach relatively easily (although traffic awful in summer) and still have access to outstanding high schools in York, all the excitements and opportunities of a vibrant university city. Transport links are good here - we are v lucky in this. And Haxby is about to get a wee train station.

Your child will thank you for not living from out with no bus route or work opportunities.

Good luck deciding - it's a great place!

MrsSkylerWhite · 24/02/2024 11:21

No idea where it is in Yorkshire, probably “mid”, but Skipton is a wonderful town.
you’d possibly struggle with your budget in York and Harrogate.

Looks round furtively!!

There are some nice cafes in Haxby. I like Aroma.

The weather is significantly better this side of the Pennines than Cumbria! I absolutely love North Yorkshire, it has everything. Especially Betty's and even a Booths.

Ilkley is rather nice too, OP, even if it is in West Yorkshire. Easy commute to Leeds. Expensive though.

Objectrelations · 24/02/2024 11:27

Love that Haxby is getting a shout out in real time here!!

A train station would put my son into total heaven - he will definitely be living the dream !! 😀

I did one of those ancestry DNA things last year and apparently I have at least 500 years of ancestry in North/West Yorkshire going back to the 1600's on one side of the family.

if only I could be arsed to do some family history stuff

Quarmby's in Sheriff Hutton is a nice cafe too and not too far from Strensall and Haxby.

It's a bit controversial though.

There is a level crossing in Haxby - and you can often see "steamies" going between York and Scarborough

City of York Council confirms site of new £23m Haxby Station

Haxby’s new railway station looks set to be going on Towthorpe Road after all.

Nice!! Bad bargain lane !! Grin

The Bad Bargain Lane house is very close to Derwenthorpe, and the stables mentioned up thread. It's close to Stockton Lane, so good access to the Coastliner service if you're looking to get out into the countryside and the coast without using a car. It's just 30 mins walk into town, and roughly the same to Monks Cross / Vangarde shops / cinema / gym

Just further along Bad Bargain Lane, there's the local library with a cafe and, behind it, a small but perfectly formed Better Gym.

(Another local lass here!)

It's a lovely drive between Skipton and Harrogate - but that road seems more and more prone to landslips

Not in Winter or the dark it isn't and sadly I have been 1st/2nd on the scene at 2 fatal accidents on that road (one of which was horrific)

I really like Bilton- friends live there- it has great local shops and probably the place in Harrogate with the greatest sense of community. (I live in Oatlands)

Yikes. I thought that you had to move to North Yorkshire. No way would I choose it from choice as the weather is so poor.

I get on the train in Harrogate in jumpers and coat and 3 hours later get off in London in a t shirt. The difference is often 5 degrees- 3 today. This week prediction is that London goes to 15 but Harrogate is 11 max.

South coast near Rustington etc is cheaper and warmer.

Cheaper than the nice bits of North Yorkshire for a similar cottage - yes.
I am selling a house in North Yorkshire and we have no set place to go and that is a cheaper option with much better weather.
