North Yorkshire forever home location!

Hi mumsnet, I've posted about moving before and am planning on moving later this year to the North Yorkshire area. Work will be in York (or possibly Leeds). My son has ASD and needs decent public transport options for some independence as he gets older.

Can you recommend me somewhere for us to live?

We like:

Off road walks with a bit of variety from the house (or nearby);

Good bus or train links;

Within 30 mins of decent shops / culture for a mooch and to do and take part in stuff. Son loves having a go at theatre.

Ideally no more than an hour from the coast as currently live 500m from a beach and scared of being landlocked ...

Is there such a unicorn?

Skipton an hour from the coast? Which coast? By helicopter, perhaps 🤣

I thought this too!!

Bishopthorpe / Fulford good choices. Maybe Stamford bridge as well.

Nice!! Bad bargain lane !! Grin

Ha,

My brother and his girlfriend lived in a rental house on bad bargain lane when they were students. The first week they lived there the living room ceiling fell in!

Don't bother with Malton or Norton. They're neither here nor there towns, you're always in the car and stuck on the A64 trying to get anywhere. Theoretically you're only 30 mins from the coast but on any sunny summer's day, it's closer to an hour away. Walks are not great around the area either, very limited.

Imstillawake · 24/02/2024 00:40

Stamford Bridge is lovely but had a fair bit of flooding recently. And busy with tourists in the summer. Beverley is lovely, a 45ish minute drive from York. But further to Leeds. Plenty of beaches close by. Closest is Hornsea and Bridlington. Plenty of nice shops and restaurants, a Minster and the Westwood. I lived there for a while but missed the hilly walks you get in North Yorkshire. Driffield similar distance to York and closer to Bridlington/Scarborough. More decent walks close by but quieter with less shops and restaurants. Plenty of trains to Beverley, Hull, Sheffield, Bridlington and Scarborough.

@Maarlia

OP also said North Yorkshire and commutable to York.

Skipton is lovely and the surrounding countryside is stunning, but although it is still in North Yorkshire it always feels a long way away from most of the rest of the county.

Oops sorry meant to quote

OP said ‘ideally no more than an hour from the beach’.

OP, only mentioned Skipton as you mentioned you might be working in Leeds.

Thank-you yes office part of job could be based in York or Leeds

But definitely leaning towards York for work.
I was thinking East coast anyway for some reason.

Yes just checked and the OS map shows surprisingly few walks in the area from or around Malton

Have you considered Scarborough? Train links to York; along with Stephen Joseph there is the Open Air Theatre and Spa theatre and YMCA for youth theatre. Houses on South Cliff and near castle are minutes from the sea and in budget. It isn't all slot machines and day trippers like people picture it

Economically deprived-most deprived place in North Yorkshire . Probably the place in North Yorkshire with the most deprivation related crime.

There is a reason it is cheap.

(I know that Yorks stats will be worse but York is a larger place with many more visitors and students)

cakeorwine · 24/02/2024 07:59

What kind of house are you looking for?

People keep showing you 4 bedrooms - is it just you and your 17 yr old DS?

What kind of walking are you into? You can easily get to the NY Moors and the Dales from North York - takes about an hour to get to Pately Bridge in Nidderdale and Bolton Abbey for example, but places like Castle Howard area - The Howardian Hills- which has some lovely walks is much closer - about 20 minutes!

LunaNorth · 24/02/2024 08:08

Stamford Bridge is ruined by the traffic that runs through it. I wouldn’t call it lovely. It could be, but there’s usually a queue traffic where its heart should be.

I don't understand why they don't build a bypass.

Having a major road over a stone bridge controlled by traffic lights - what could go wrong with that?

Shitty commute to York- I would say not really possible. Poor public health services (given son has ASD)
1hr 20-30 by irregular train
Says 1 hour 20 to drive but that is rubbish- the Harrogate bit alone can be an hour some days. the road is always closed. Took friend 2 hours to get from Skipton to Harrogate last week.

Strensall, in the old bit of the village opposite the church.

Friend used to live in identical house to that one (wondering if it was that one). Nice house and a good location (traffic a bit of an issue getting out but it is York)

It's me, 17 year old d's and an older son that may stay where we are now but I want to have a bedroom for. In an ideal world I would have a spare room or potential to put in a garden chalet. So a 3 bed most likely needed, or a 2 with a garden and extra reception room I could use.

Walking wise I do- beach, cliff paths, round the reservoir - usually fairly short up to about 6 miles but happy to explore and diversify once I move!!

It's a lovely drive between Skipton and Harrogate - but that road seems more and more prone to landslips

If I were you, I would rent somewhere in North York. Haxby and Strensall - Haxby has a better high street than Strensall - there is the Army HQ there and not much of a centre compared to Haxby.

There are loads of walks you can do from there - Haxby gives you the chance to get up to the Moors and the Howardian Hills. It's on your doorstep.

Very good bus links to town, 3 big supermarkets - and 2 shopping centres - Clifton Moor and Monks Cross. Easy to get to places like Beningbrough for walks on the river there. And tea shops.

cakeorwine · 24/02/2024 09:42

If you need to rent before committing

3 bedroom semi-detached house for rent in Tamworth Road, Clifton Moor, York, YO30 (rightmove.co.uk)

Clifton Moor is one of the main out of town shopping areas - the traffic can get busy at rush hour (there is a plan to upgrade the roundabouts over the outer ring road) - but it's in North York.

Check out this 3 bedroom semi-detached house for rent on Rightmove

3 bedroom semi-detached house for rent in Tamworth Road, Clifton Moor, York, YO30 for £1,350 pcm. Marketed by Northwood, York
