North Yorkshire forever home location!

Hi mumsnet, I've posted about moving before and am planning on moving later this year to the North Yorkshire area. Work will be in York (or possibly Leeds). My son has ASD and needs decent public transport options for some independence as he gets older.

Can you recommend me somewhere for us to live?

We like:

Off road walks with a bit of variety from the house (or nearby);

Good bus or train links;

Within 30 mins of decent shops / culture for a mooch and to do and take part in stuff. Son loves having a go at theatre.

Ideally no more than an hour from the coast as currently live 500m from a beach and scared of being landlocked ...

Is there such a unicorn?

Bishopthorpe in York.
One lane away from York College & a big Tesco, could walk or cycle to college, good bus links to town, A64 is nearby - straight through to Leeds.
Bishopthorpe is lovely, home to Bishopthorpe Palace, residence of the Arch Bishop of York.
It's on the river.
You could get a dormer bungalow for your budget.
Or try Companthorpe.
Tbh the bus routes in York are pretty good.

I live in Pocklington and love it, but my son doesn’t drive and recently moved to York city centre because the transport links are pretty rubbish.

It’s great if you’re a middle aged non-drinker, but your 17 year old would be bored silly.

I think the bus route into York is decent, we use the bus that goes through Pock regularly when we go to York, every half an hour although admittedly on a Saturday evening leaving York, the times leave a bit to be desired 🙄

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 20:17

Thanks for your suggestions everyone I have a very decent list to research further

Outside of York
Northallerton
Thirsk
Knaresborough
Pocklington
Selby?
Stockton on the Forest

And LOTS in actual York!

If you can afford York then 100% York itself
Better for your son but also chance of a much better social life/opportunities to join groups and make friends for you

What makes you think there’s a lack of employment for young people in Ripon?

My eldest caught the 36 bus to Harrogate for work for years. 35 mins from Ripon to Harrogate. Much cheaper than running a car.

It doesn't have any major employers that are accessible by public transport?
I am not talking student jobs but sustained employment.
There is a distinct lack of jobs in Harrogate at the moment!

We recently moved to Knaresborough and it would absolutely tick all your boxes.

Disagree with a previous post saying there is not much to do, we can't believe how much there is to do for such a small place: The castle and courthouse, conyham hall, Mother Shipton's, the riverside, caves, nidd gorge and the waterfront. Abbey Road would be great to run down with the dog. There is a small theatre and loads of pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants. Large leisure centre with a great pool.

25 minute bus ride into Harrogate, where there is a really nice theatre, cinema, decent shopping. 30 minutes to York and 45 minutes to Leeds on the train. Really straight forward and easy transport links for your son to use. Road links are fantastic too due to the close proximity to the A1.

Saltburn, which has a beautiful beach and lovely little town is exactly 1 hr by car.

You could definitely buy a 3 bed detached property in your budget.

Oh and did I mention that it's a beautiful - that view from the castle over the viaduct 😍. I'll never get bored of it!

I did love it when I visited from York and walked in the woods by the river and the trains did seem frequent

I think after living in York for so long that smaller North Yorkshire towns just don't feel the same.

I guess it's the kind of place you want to live in. How "big" do you need?

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 21:17

@cakeorwine thinks so much for all your input I am taking it all on board. It is different living somewhere rather than just visiting.

I agree with you - I need to not get carried away with any locations far from York or not really well connected to York !!

We currently live on a small Island and the whole point of moving is for us to get to be within easy access to wider social opportunities and things like independent film and also things like the national railway museum for my son 😀

If you're keen to be on the outskirts of York or close by, how about:
Osbaldwick (where we live: easy to get into town via bus or bike, reasonable running and walking with the dog around the village and Uni campus, easy to get to the ring road)
Dunnington: a bit further out but on a reasonable bus route (~20 mins to city centre)
Stamford Bridge: same bus route as Dunnington but a bit further out (~35 mins to city centre).

You should be able to get something within budget for your money.

I liked the feel of Osbsldwick when I went to see the sustainable development nearby (derwentthorpe) with a friend who has been involved with it (I work in sustainability) and then I walked along the cycle track back into the centre. Did feel quite urban though but obviously I was walking in not out from there

I agree

Lived for 50 plus years in North Yorkshire- all over and also worked for the LA for many years- so pretty much been everywhere and lived in a fair few areas

Rural is great but as our children became teens we moved into Harrogate - wish that I had gone for York which was cheaper at the time but is now more expensive.

My intention was always to retire to a flat in central York. It is a proper town (I know it is a City) with so much going on and decent shopping.

I know Derwenthorpe well as I pass through twice a day to go to the stables where my horse is kept (see, Osbaldwick is semi-rural!) and use that cycle path. You were heading the wrong way!! Go east and it gets better. Have a look at the OS map around Osbaldwick, Murton and the Uni campus. There's lots, particularly if you head towards Stockton-on-the-Forest and/or Dunnington.

I have to admit I'd absolutely love
a bungalow.

There's something about not needing scaffolding ever that feels sooo good!!

We live in West Yorkshire but are planning to move to East or North Yorkshire in the next couple of years.
We’ve been looking at the York/ Selby outskirts - Holme on Spalding Moor, Bubwith, Market Weighton plenty of lovely countryside walks but I don’t imagine public transport is great they are quite rural. Good luck in your search 🥰

uggmum · 23/02/2024 22:11

I agree with other posters
Malton, knaresborough and Ripon are all lovely.
My DC live in York city centre and it's great. So many free things you can do. Good transport links. Lots of great restaurants. But it does get very busy with tourists.

If you want the best sunday lunch then do go to The Talbot in Malton. It's gorgeous.

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 22:16

Can't wait to visit again when the weather improves and look around some of these

You’re better off visiting them now. It’s probably the wettest, greyest winter we’ve had. If you can find somewhere you like at this time of year, and it’s not under water, you’re going to love it when it’s better weather..

MrSlant · 23/02/2024 22:25

Right, you are going to have to hear me out here but have you considered Brid? It's quite a bustling little town with excellent rail links to Hull/York/Scarborough (with the Stephen Joseph theatre) Beverly and Cottingham, right by the sea and some really lovely properties for sale?

It is such a friendly town and is close for lots of different things. I really like it anyway!

Skipton an hour from the coast? Which coast? By helicopter, perhaps 🤣

OP said ‘ideally no more than an hour from the beach’.

Lytham - an hour and six minutes…..no helicopter needed….

North Yorkshire forever home location!
Maarlia · 23/02/2024 22:57

OP, only mentioned Skipton as you mentioned you might be working in Leeds.
