North Yorkshire forever home location!

Hi mumsnet, I've posted about moving before and am planning on moving later this year to the North Yorkshire area. Work will be in York (or possibly Leeds). My son has ASD and needs decent public transport options for some independence as he gets older.

Can you recommend me somewhere for us to live?

We like:

Off road walks with a bit of variety from the house (or nearby);

Good bus or train links;

Within 30 mins of decent shops / culture for a mooch and to do and take part in stuff. Son loves having a go at theatre.

Ideally no more than an hour from the coast as currently live 500m from a beach and scared of being landlocked ...

Is there such a unicorn?

I will rent definitely first I think. Would prefer to get into York to work by train or if closer would bike it if there are safe routes as love cycling

@cakeorwine
Any suggestions for where in York good for walks?

What kind of walks?

The great thing about York is the proximity to the Moors, Dales and the coast.

I do a lot of hill walking - and can get out quite easily.

York itself is quite flat - with nice river walks, and some nice parks such as Rowntree Park. We often walk in from where I live (I live on the outskirts and it takes about 40 minutes to walk in.)

It's also very cyclable as well.

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 00:06

I do love York have been a few times now. Just not sure where is nice (and affordable to live) and has some off road footpaths as I love to jog with my dog.

How about Malton? It’s a short hop on the train to York and about 40mins to the coast. Quick drive to walks on the moors and Dalby Forest too.
Pickering also, nicer than Malton imo, but no train, although you can drive to Malton station.

Quiet remote for a 17 year old though with limited transport unless you drive

York has reasonably good bike paths - and lots of people do cycle in. It can be busy with traffic at certain times of day, like most places - the outer ring road especially.

Ametora · 23/02/2024 00:10

Depends on where you are moving from but rural transport is poor and there will be limited options for a 17 year old in many places to socialise.

York has quite a range of areas - and a range of access to facilities such as supermarkets, libraries etc and bus routes.

We are quite well served with public transport. I guess your DS might be job hunting so a city like York should offer potential for employment that he can get to.

That's so true.
A friend of mine lives in a village just outside the ring road - and as far as public transport goes, it seems First York haven't heard of the place and other buses might pop in once or twice a day. And if you are in town, you aren't going to get a bus back there in the evening.

@Badbadbunny coujd you recommend some areas of York or Harrogate that are affordable (and nice) - if they exist?

£375,000 would get some nice areas of York.

There's Haxby - which is just outside York - it's really York but is its own place. Good transport links on the buses, next to the ring road, easy supermarket access and is even getting its own train station soon. It also has the feel of a "village / town" whilst really being York.

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 00:19

@Ametora @cakeorwine
Yes independence, socialising and job opportunities are crucial.

He is very happy getting places with straightforward transport links so buses or trains needs to be running at latest about 10pm or it's just too limiting for getting home again.

Ah I will look at Haxby. Think someone I used to work with lives there.

Last buses tend to be about 11pm - 11.30pm from the centre of York.

There are also some nice villages just to the South West of York - Copmanthorpe and Bishopthorpe. Bishopthorpe is very nice - right by the river, good transport to town and easy cycling into York as well. Good access to the A64 as well.

LittleMy77 · 23/02/2024 08:26

Look at Heworth; 1 mile from the city centre, depending on which end you live it’s got a library, cafes, post office etc, decent bus service, easy to get to monks cross which has bowling, cinema etc and 10min drive from the A64(ring road) takes less than an hour to get to the coast and there’s a direct bus that goes there

HailMary1988 · 23/02/2024 11:39

I think York or just outside would suit you both. York really is great for theatre, shops eating out etc. Plenty for teens to do. Also increased job opportunites.

How about a village like Stockton on the Forest. On the Coastliner bus route into York/Leeds in one direction and the coast the other way. Buses every 30 minutes and they run until about 11pm leaving York on an evening. The Coastliner also passes the Sixth Form College.

By car you can be in the city in 10 mins, to Monks Cross/Vanguard in less than 10.

The coast (Filey, Scarborough or Brid) are all an hour away.

In 15 minutes you can be in the Howardian Hills for a walk.

Lots of access to footpaths from the village itself and it is surrounded by countryside. (The only downside is that it is flat this close to York - not much you can do about this.)

You should be able to get something for your budget in a village on the outskirts.

York is perfectly safe.

You might think so. They thought differently after my SIL had some problems with drunks.

Objectrelations · 23/02/2024 16:18

@cakeorwine that kind of last bus time is perfect for getting home after a film or similar so would suit me and my son as we are not known for our wild partying 😀

I probably just need to look at flood areas don't I as am thinking there might be a reason houses are less expensive perhaps in some areas.

Re floods, yep. A lot of the newer housing down the bottom of fulford is built in a flood plain and floods badly when it rains a lot. Stay away from some of the areas that back direct onto the river - it’s rained tons this year and the city still has a lot of low lying water

Re areas, you’ll find some on the west side cheaper (parts of Acomb, foxwood) Parts of Tang Hall are also cheaper - lots of uni students live there

Round Clifton is nice (lots of hospital housing tho so might be difficult to find something) Dringhouses you tend to get decent value for your money (but felt a bit far out for me - but is not really!) New Earswick has a nice villager feel but isn’t far from the centre

Strensall might work….nice common with good walking/jogging. Train line passes thru but no station at strensall, though they are talking about building one in Haxby which is the next village. Good bus links.

Stockton on the Forest is very very very long. And narrow.

Maarlia · 23/02/2024 18:09

Skipton?

Just over an hour to the coast and regular trains to Leeds.
Fabulous countryside.

You can get quite a bit in your budget in York.

No floods here. No. Never floods here...

Apart from where they built on a flood plain.

York has invested in flood protection - it's usually the river banks in the centre you can see - the Kings Arms - but I can't imagine the city being flooded.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/02/2024 18:37

Would you considered popping into the East Riding and look at Pocklington?

Tallisker · 23/02/2024 19:01

Skipton an hour from the coast? Which coast? By helicopter, perhaps 🤣
