Thanks, @Tilllly. I never would have guessed those. My tastes in British authors run more toward Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Since we can't cook out in the rain, DH picked up a rotisserie chicken at the supermarket, and we'll have that with rice and peas.

Death, have done some reading now about the origins of shortbread. 😁
Tillly, very cute doggo! 🥰
Uman, your dinner sounds good!😋
Spaniels, that's quite a holiday. 😉
I spent time in Australia, but haven't been to NZ. I'd absolutely love to go, though.
Math, hope weather has eased and kitty hasn't loosened mirror.

Lazy day other than cleaning and laundry early this morning. Watching a doc about a cult here. Had no idea of its' existence. Quite scary.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/03/2024 01:58

And Happy Mum's Day to UK mums today. 🌷

mathanxiety · 10/03/2024 02:42

The mirror seems very securely attached. Dcat is a very vigorous scratcher.

There are two seismic zones in the surrounding region here in NE Illinois but they're not something anyone considers a potential danger. I don't think there are earthquake-related building codes.

DD and I went out grocery shopping and for once managed to get everything on the list. Earlier in the day I got a haircut, keeping the S&P and cutting off the dyed ends. I have officially waved the white flag. Onwards and upwards!

Thank you ☺️

Probably more than my boys will remember!🤨

Penguinsa · 10/03/2024 07:07

Cute dog Tilllly hope you could play with her. Hope you get Mother's Day remembered, one has a wife now so that might help jog his memory. If not treat yourself.

I am also not expecting much though not that bothered though did order DSs favourite cake from the baker so we can all have a slice of that (and DS can have the remaining half) and I used DHs card to pay for it. Its raining here all day. DH has announced his plans for today are filling the green bin with the wild rose he cut yesterday. He probably won't do that either as its raining and there's always lots of things he is doing "tomorrow".

DD has requested a Toby carvery takeaway but they are all quite a drive. Would imagine will have Sunday roast here and might go swimming.

HelenaJustina · 10/03/2024 07:29

Happy Mother’s Day to all celebrating.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/03/2024 07:48

Ooohhh what kind of cake, Penguinsa? 😋

Penguinsa · 10/03/2024 08:17

Its a red velvet cake which is decorated for Mother's Day. DS and DD its their favourite cake, I normally don't like red velvet cake at least the industrial shop ones but do like this but only one slice as its very creamy but that works as I want a nice slice of cake but not one I will want the whole cake. They also do a chocolate Easter cake which I am sure DS needs.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/03/2024 09:06

Penguinsa, sounds delicious! 😋Have a good day!!!!🌷

MissConductUS · 10/03/2024 11:02

Happy Mother's Day to all who celebrate it today! I'm always a bit confused when I see all of the Mother's Day posts on MN weeks after I've already celebrated it.

The clocks went forward an hour overnight, so after having some coffee, I went around resetting the ones that don't do it automatically. Resetting the clock on the stove is the trickiest.

It's already 7:00 AM, so it doesn't look like I'll be able to make it to church for the 8:30 service.

SpanielsMatter · 11/03/2024 14:07

Took small spaniel for a light groom. Groomer is fantastic and groomed my rescue springer for years, plus she’s really knowledgeable with useful and practical doggie contacts in the area. Small spaniel liked her, ( knew he would) let her cut the hair in between his pads, and she dealt with his crusty bits from yesterday’s adventure. We will have fewer traction control issues resulting in skidding and face planting into the deck or door, sounds funny but it looks very painful. He can now run without losing his back end.

It really is a joy to work with trusted people who love their work and are in it for dog welfare. She now doesn’t advertise, picks and chooses clients and sorts out matted rescues for free, has a whole host of rescues herself both cats and dogs. One cat who I’m very fond of supervises the grooming and comes for a smooch. Unlike before he was fostered, small boy gets muddy/ sandy and salty fur with beach and stream walks, being clipped allows for less time grooming and more time walking, playing and cuddling. Groomer is a single mum doing it hard but still manages to give her skills for free to the dogs who are in most need, plus she refuses any silly fads like colouring dog fur.

She restores faith in humans, plus her cats are fabulous and boss canine clients about which is a sight to behold. I feel privileged we are on her list because she could boot us for dogs who are larger and therefore a higher price. We decided that we should keep his first groom short so he falls in love with her, she refused proper payment as well, charging only a minimal amount.

Small boy getting a lot quieter in the car, less anxious and likes his dog seat for security, he doesn’t like the travel crate. So dog seat, with seatbelt harness on the back seat. A road worker came near the car and he growled and meant it! I was most surprised and wondered at first what the rumbling noise was… he was protecting me I think.

Dh’s physio in hospital went well. dropped in food and UK tv. I wish we could pay for a licence instead of having to ‘acquire’ tv.

@MissConductUS did you make it to church?

I hope everyone got some recognition yesterday for being a Mum.

@Penguinsa hope the red velvet cake was delicious.

MissConductUS · 11/03/2024 15:11

Spaniels, I did not make it to church. I felt bad about that since I also missed it while I was in Florida two weeks ago. It's great that you have such a lovely groomer. We have two cats, who, fortunately, are self-grooming. They're both short-haired.

We're having 40-50 mph winds today, with temps around 4C. It feels like January has returned.

I had a lovely Mother's Day. Daughter and OH spoiled me rotten. Had a curry delivered, long wait but well worth it.

Rose potted up in New pot. It's called Bring Me Sunshine, which was a song we had played at my late brother's funeral service. He was a Morecambe and Wise fan.

I've been spending time playing archery on the wii and loving it.

I met a friend for lunch

We travelled to meet in the middle

We've been friends for 38 years... ☺️

HildaTablet · 11/03/2024 17:26

I just bought 7 doors.

MissConductUS · 11/03/2024 18:23

Hilda, doors are expensive. Since you've bought seven, I assume they are interior doors.

The high winds have brought down a tree by the reservoir, which has fallen over the spillway. I was going to take a picture, but there were men in high-viz vests standing around staring at it as if they didn't know what to do.

Ooh I just received an email from the local council:

“On receipt of your enquiry the area has been inspected by a Highways Inspector. This inspection identified a defect that meets the Council’s Highway Maintenance Safety Inspection Policy. Therefore, I am pleased to advise that a works order has been issued to carry out the required repairs in line with the Council’s service standards.”
There have been a couple of workmen outside today, so that was very quick work. Well done my Council. I’m very impressed!

In other news I’ve been doing archery on the Wii, and playing games on there with my daughter. A lovely day again today again.

Artemis6 · 11/03/2024 19:58

My new Vileda spray mop arrived in the post.

It is brilliant.

I am in love with it.

HildaTablet · 11/03/2024 20:26

Yes, seven interior doors. We’re renovating a house and we need that many, unfortunately. We’re very reluctant to buy new ones, not just because we're keen on reusing but also because the old ones are so much nicer and made of much higher-quality wood. It takes some sleuthing to track them down, though.

MissConductUS · 11/03/2024 20:28

Welcome, @Artemis6, and thanks for sharing your cleaning equipment news. I had to google the name, as we don't have them in the US. I do have a spray mop called a Swiffer Wet Jet that sounds very similar, and I love mine as well.

I'm about to head home for the day and am hoping that no downed trees will block my way.

OP posts:
MissConductUS · 11/03/2024 20:30

Hilda, I hope they are all a standard size. We had to have a door made to measure for our last house. It was a princely sum.

Fruitystones · 11/03/2024 20:31

My 10 year olds first ever debit card arrived in the post. It gets topped up with pocket money every week. I'm intrigued to see how she chooses to spend it.

HildaTablet · 11/03/2024 21:57

@MissConductUS unfortunately, they aren’t! All slightly different. It’s an old-ish house (Victorian) so nothing’s standard….🥴

MissConductUS · 11/03/2024 22:04

Welcome, @Fruitystones, and thanks for sharing your child-related financial management news. When both of our kids went to university, they got debit cards attached to cash management accounts. DH monitored their spending activity and could top up their accounts with a transfer as needed. It worked quite well. DS graduated in 2022, and DD will graduate in May, so the transfers are almost done, thank goodness.

Hilda, you're right. The old interior doors were solid wood, and now they are hollow. Are you renovating your current house, or is this another property?

I got home with no fallen trees impeding my path. I'll take a picture of the one by the reservoir tomorrow if they haven't removed it yet. The winds have died down considerably.
