Had to have our 15 year old Boxer euthanised a month ago. Two days afterwards, via doggie contacts I was emailed and asked if I would consider a fostered Blenheim Cavalier King Charles spaniel, who is 6, had a rough time before he was fostered. I was told he is a ‘talker’ and nervous in the car, even with medication he found the drive ‘home’ scary, is learning lead skills, how the outside isn’t that scary and waves are fun for a paddle/ don’t need to be barked at. My home was feeling very lonely as DH has been hospitalised for months and with no springer spaniel or Boxer…. to keep the routine, the cuddles and laughs going…. Home has felt rather empty, even after decorating a couple of rooms….

Well, since my new boy moved in he’s been simply amazing. His foster home refused to take a payment for him, they were more worried about the standard of his home… gifts have been sent that will never ever ever go any way to compensating them for the bundle of energy, love and despite a hideous start trust that he has brought to my home, but I hope show my gratitude. The foster carers have kept in touch and we laugh at photos and what he gets up to. My rather fabulous neighbours have made introductions, including the middle aged and senior dogs who live nearby , despite understandable nerves, he has found a small fan club.

Hes learning puppy skills but is just an amazing dog and I pinch myself to think he’s been to multiple homes, one potential family returned him after 4 hours! Today, I did the usual hospital visit, having left my boy with his snuffle mat, toys and radio on and came back to the most delicious welcome, no damage, no barking just patiently waiting ….

He follows me from room to room, loves a cuddle and is an energetic boy which is great for making sure I get out and about. It’s very dull and unexciting but boy do I love this boy, after a difficult meeting about my husband’s future medically this dog prevented me from dissolving into tears today… the wonder of one, previously unwanted, badly treated, cavalier King Charles spaniel….

whew sorry this is rather long…

MissConductUS · 08/03/2024 15:00

Welcome, @SpanielsMatter, and thanks for sharing your news. Don't worry about the length; sometimes, we have a lot we need to get out of our minds. I'm so sorry to hear about your Boxer's passing and your husband's medical challenges.

Your new spaniel sounds lovely. While he cannot replace your Boxer, he can provide some of the love and companionship you were missing.

When a beloved pet dies, it takes a piece of our heart with it, which is very painful. When a new one enters your life, it gives you a piece of its heart to replace it. Over the years, this makes our hearts more open and loving, just as theirs are.

I hope you continue to join us on this thread. Think of us as your far-flung neighbors, sharing a bit of news over the garden wall or a cup of tea in the kitchen.

Welcome SpanielsMatter Glad your new dog has found a lovely home, so sorry to hear about your DH. Pet pictures are always popular on here if you have any you'ld be happy to share.

Hope you got to where you were supposed to be Tilllly OK

Hope everyone has a good weekend and a lovely Mother's Day to those in the UK on Sunday.

How are you Havoc?

Have made some progress with the MRI or hopefully I have. As soon as I paid scanUK for a scan (not sure on quality) the oncologist at hospital finally offered to do a referral letter for the Nuffield which is better as scan would go back to her. So I have a refund minus £50 admin from scan UK and will await the letter then book via Nuffield.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/03/2024 17:01

Just a quick Hello friends ☺️
Have turned the corner with cold. Very happy as off to hosp in 20mins for a very minor surgery. Having two moles removed/biopsied.
Thanks for asking, Penguinsa. 🩷
Welcome and hug to @SpanielsMatter this is a kind, calm and supportive thread. 🩷

Penguinsa · 08/03/2024 17:09

Hope the mole removal goes as well as it can Havoc

DH walked backwards in his slippers onto Floof's tail. Floof was very nervous around DH then but OK now. DD gave him a big cuddle.

Just deciding what is for dinner. I suggested pancakes but DH said we have had then once this week already on Monday. I am still trying for pancakes. DH is trying to consult DD. She's asleep.

MissConductUS · 08/03/2024 17:09

Penuinsa, the scan from scanUK would have been just as good as the NHS one. They all use the same machines from GE or Seimens and the radiologists and technicians would have the same certifications.

I have the radiologist's report from my MRI, which I appreciate as there's no room for doubt as to what's going on with my cervical spine.

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 08/03/2024 17:20

Good news, penguinsa. Hope it can be arranged soon.

MissC hoping your surgery will be done soon and that your recovery will be smooth.

havoc best wishes for your procedure and well done for shaking off the cold.

Spaniel you wonder who is the rescued and who the rescuer?

It is pouring rain here today. Dcat spent half an hour this morning trying to break into DD's bedroom by scratching at a wall-hung heavy mirror in the hallway beside DD's door. The mirror rattles a bit when she does this, and I worry she'll somehow knock it off the wall.

Penguinsa · 08/03/2024 17:24

I was worried whether the NHS would accept the scan UK one, the Nuffield links in but scan UK does not. The oncologist works at the Nuffield and the hospital and can transfer records between the two and you can move between the two. Its quite odd here as sometimes different departments in the same hospital cannot see each others things. And the scanUK one was about 1.5 hours from here though that was OK. Huge shortage of radiologists here. Though it might have been fine but I need to be certain so that I can have reconstruction done. I'ld prefer to go via my oncologist and she will only go via Nuffield but she is very thorough. I don't really understand it completely, all I know is there are lots of staff shortages and someone said a lot is contracted out to private companies.

MissConductUS · 08/03/2024 19:41

Regarding the transfer of MRI images, it's nice if the doctors are all on the same EMR (electronic medical records) system and can pull them up on their computer, but there's an easy workaround.

I'm booked to see the neurosurgeon who will assist in my disc replacement surgery in a few weeks. The medical practice where I had the MRI done is copying the scan to a disk (a CD-ROM) and mailing it to him. He can pop the disk into a computer in his office and look at the scan.

We have plenty of radiologists here because many hospitals outsource radiology work to India. The radiologists there can access the scans over the Internet and then submit their reports electronically. I'm surprised the NHS isn't doing the same thing.

If you can get the scan at Nuffield Health, that sounds easier for everyone.

Thank you everyone 🤗

@Penguinsa that sounds really complicated, not what you need to be dealing with, a simple, I need this seeing to should suffice, not navigating staffing issues. Has Floof forgiven DH yet? Only the finest treats as bribery will suffice, I’m guessing?

@mathanxiety I really hope cat is ok and so is the wall, is there anyway you can add extra supports to the mirror? I now live in an earthquake prone place and we have all sorts of devices to keep heavy items in place in case of earthquakes that would also work for curious cats?

@MissConductUS oh wow that is rather beautiful, re pets, thank you. It’s rather strange mourning our very loved Boxer but having a new family addition ( his foster family are wonderful but are looking at reducing numbers due to their age).

@Mumtobabyhavoc hope the procedure went ok, the cold is continuing to go away and may I say I love your username …. Made me smile

Went and sat with my elderly neighbour today, she has nerve damage and is on strong meds, our spaniel works wonders on her mood, he sat really quietly on her bed while she stroked his ears. He’s brought so much happiness after so many humans let him down. It’s a wonder some animals ever trust us.

I’m considering buying the door mat below for my friend who has the most delightful but nervous rescue cat. I have included a gratuitous photo of the spaniel who brings delight during some tough days despite the fact he is owed so much due to being let down by so many humans.

Penguins, sounds like the wheels are turning, albeit slowly. What did you end up having for dinner after hubby vetoed pancakes? I do want to correct your DH, though - there isn't a limit on the number of times you can have pancakes in a week. Poor Floof's tail! 😿
Math, was rainy here today, too.
Tillly, are you still in the Uner? 😼
Urs, re the chilli chocolate. 😺
Death, Scottish Shortbread ? Wondering as I think I have three recipes for different type of shortbread.
I like lots of different types of cookies. I don't bake it, or cookies in general, often though.

Thanks for the kind thoughts:
Mole removal went well. A bit of an aching/burning sensation on belly where one was. I opted for a wider border in case it's positive, so I don't have to go back .
I'm exhausted and ready to sleep.
Night, night. 😽

Penguinsa · 09/03/2024 09:24

Thanks MissC Hopefully will get sorted next week - phoned today but could only leave message. Other one is cancelled and got £400 out of £450 back or should do shortly.

Beautiful spaniel Spaniels So glad you found each other. Where do you live if you get earthquakes? We have quite a lot of international people on here, its lovely.

Havoc Glad the mole removal is done, hope its not too painful. We had pancakes in the end with strawberry cider. I had mozzarella, parma ham (added at end) and asparagus.

DH just went to feed the silkie chickens and one escaped so DH will be playing chase the chicken, he's leaving her out a bit for now.

SpanielsMatter · 09/03/2024 09:42

Left the UK when I was 27 for a holiday and erm stayed…. Longest holiday on record … 18 years! I’m in New Zealand, DH is also from the UK although there is a north/ south divide and long conversations regarding the pronunciation of bath, path, grass.

@Penguinsa how do you entice a chicken back to where it lives?

Penguinsa · 09/03/2024 09:57

Good holiday then Spaniels 😎When my children were little I knew a lovely couple who were in the UK from NZ, went back when the children were school aged and live at the bottom of the south island.

The silkie varies, its just the one who does this about once a year and twice she's been in a neighbours garden, next time she just went and stood by the door to her chicken cottage. This time she's standing by her chicken cottage but when DH opens the door she runs into the garden so leaving her a bit longer.

Penguinsa · 09/03/2024 14:24

DD helped get the silkie back. DD thinks DS may have visited the silkies and left their run open as it was open in a different place to usual.

Did some hoovering of Floof's fluff upstairs.

Deathraystare · 09/03/2024 18:04

@SpanielsMatter

Sorry to hear about your old doggie.

Good to hear about your cavalier King Charles spaniel. Though I am more of a cat person I have heard all good things about this breed. Not relevant in your case but apparently they make a good first pet, are apparently ok with cats and kids.

Deathraystare · 09/03/2024 18:27

@Mumtobabyhavoc

There is only one type of Shortbread. That is Scottish. The rest are pale imitations!!!

@SpanielsMatter

Apologies. So busy with the doggie chat I forgot to send hugs re your husband!

I am watching Crufts at the moment. They are doing flyball at the moment. Very fast. No boxers or spaniels involved. Not sure what dogs. Perhaps greyhounds? Certainly leanings though I think I saw a collie type. I had a bit of a silly thought imagining bulldogs and sausage dogs raking part!!!! Hehe!!

Deathraystare · 09/03/2024 18:28

Lean not leanings.

Umanresources · 09/03/2024 18:40

Argh. Just lost my update.

@Tilllly I am indeed a member of FOCS and just joined NCC. Thank you for the heads up.

Having mussels and crusty bread for tea. Not had them for ages.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. I need to catch up on the news, but gorgeous photo of the dog @SpanielsMatter .

HelenaJustina · 09/03/2024 19:52

What is NCC and FOCS? Should I know?!

Penguinsa · 09/03/2024 20:31

Had a Chinese takeaway for dinner, a couple of spare ribs in sauce and mixed veg and now having a cup of tea with 2 shortbread biscuits.

Did some more hoovering and DH, as the green bin has been emptied, has cut down a lot of a big wild rose we have at the back of the garden. Though apparently he didn't put it in the green bin and needs to chop it up more but got a bins full. DD didn't go to work today as not very well and also river is very fast moving at the moment so restricted activities.

I asked DD if Grantchester was named after the river Granta and she said you only get information like that from her on a paid tour. 🤔Floof has had 2 tunas today so he is a very happy boy. He's always a very happy boy but this takes the trilling to another level.

Tilllly · 09/03/2024 22:28

Sassy DD @Penguinsa 🤣🤣🤣

Daisy floofmonster wants me to play

MissConductUS · 09/03/2024 22:29

@SpanielsMatter, It's lovely to hear that we have a contributor from New Zealand. Our geographic diversity is quite impressive. I live in a scenic and historic (by American standards) area north of New York City called the Hudson Highlands.

It's raining and windy today. This has been a very wet spring. The good news is that the flowers and lawns should be lovely for DD's wedding and we'll have no water restrictions this summer. The reservoirs are full. The one we draw from is the Croton reservoir, and it's currently well over capacity.

Helena, I also didn't know what NCC and FOCS were, so I feel a bit better that I'm not the only one. Perhaps someone will enlighten us.
