It's not new, it's seven hours away from home, it'd be a second home boohiss until we retire, it needs a lot of work. It's been on the market for a year and has no kitchen. It's so remote we'd need a starlink to be able to work or call an ambulance.
I have the visual equivalent of a tin ear when it comes to decorating and I'm so excited I could cry (I did cry when we visited)

Looking more like a home each time

Happierwithouthim · 27/05/2024 16:00

Garden furniture is truly beautiful, bliss, sitting out with that view

reservoirdawg · 27/05/2024 17:30

More pics.
The kitchen is going backwards! Washing up in the bath. Chose some light fittings- here with one of the kitchen units.
Bougied up a window. Hate the glazing bars and all that pine.

Wow!!! Love the colour.

Kitchen racing ahead!
I’m alone in London without DH and dog but the cornicing and paint nearly done- three coats.
I also broke into a cupboard in London where I’ve had a previous house’s curtain hermetically stored. They’ve survived! They need remaking but Dmum has offered to go up for a sewing minibreak 🥰

Had the longest weekend- Thursday midnight as we drove up after work and back last night for work today.
kitchen almost done, bar worktops and flooring. More bed making and we desperately need a sheep in the overgrown garden.
Also used it as a base for a gig 🪩

Those kitchen units are stunning!

reservoirdawg · 11/06/2024 22:38

They’re from the infamous (when I started a thread about buying them I was accused of trying to flog them!) second hand kitchen.
As many pp anticipated the remoteness is a pita. Not so much for workmen, we’ve hit gold, but deliveries. But the silver lining is that I’ll have to go up midweek next week to receive a washer dryer and fridge. Endless cajoling and even offering to leave the house unlocked didn’t work!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/06/2024 06:11

The kitchen looks lovely! Am guessing the gig was Taylor at Murrayfield (just call me Sherlock 🧐). How was it?!

reservoirdawg · 12/06/2024 08:19

Absolutely amazing. Tried and failed for every code in every venue last year via several email accounts. So when it came to getting resale tickets we were extravagant. Didn’t have to pay for accommodation or travel of course!

I’m spending about a third of my time there. Not there this weekend but drove up Weds night arriving at midnight and came back yesterday. Managed to be onsite for fridge, washing machine and cooker hood delivery.

Ohhhh some people are miserable on here. Be it wet or not, Scotland is bloody beautiful and there’s lots of dramatic, wonderful yet peaceful scenery an hour from Glasgow. Sounds increds. Congratulations!

feelingalittlehorse · 22/06/2024 09:41

And just gone back and looked through all your pictures- what a beautiful home! I’ve got house envy 🤣

GuessThatGranny · 22/06/2024 09:45

Loving all your pics @reservoirdawg - sorry if I have missed this, but where are you? Obviously not full sat nav location, but 90 minutes from Glasgow covers a lot of ground, and I’m trying visualise your dream

reservoirdawg · 22/06/2024 09:59

Don’t mind saying exactly where! I’ve name changed.
Top of Fruid reservoir between Biggar and Moffat. Without being too woo I do feel I’ve been drawn there. Over the years I’ve taken the train up or driven and marvelled at the landscape and how unknown to me and relatively accessible it must be…
Here’s a random picture taken 8 years ago from the train a few miles from the house…

I’m doing something bold with the worktops. They’re granite and need cutting and reconfiguring to fit. Going to get them fitted and then kintsugi the gaps😬
It’ll match the lamps and if it’s a hot mess at least we’ve tried to use the £££ worth of beautiful granite…

Not there this weekend 😥
Came home on the first flight from Edinburgh for work on Tuesday, brutal!
I’ve removed the other scruffy alcove in the sitting room and used two kitchen cabinets instead. They need painting in and securing but look great. The rug is enormous and was £200 from local auction house. Having paid £900! to have the granite taken away for cutting, I’m now anxiously awaiting its return and fitting 😬
Sheering time up there now- this is what their fleece does if not removed; on a walk I found a sheep who’d managed to hobble himself caught up in it 🐑

Would love an update on this.

I've read this thread with great interest as it's something I've wanted to do for a while.

Your home is just beautiful @reservoirdawg, how's it getting on?

reservoirdawg · 14/09/2024 22:24

Hello!
Not there this weekend, we’ve spent about a third of the time up there, often overlapping a few days.
I feel heartsick when I’m not there!
Works are going very slowly, but that’s fine. The original worktops didn’t survive moving and recutting so the stonemasons have fobbed us off are using a cancelled order. It’s fine, not what I’d have chosen but we’ll probably repaint the cabinets at some point, so I’m going to see what they’re like. The beautiful kitchen lights don’t throw enough light, but again I’ll replace when the flooring etc are done. They were cheap- £50 I think for four, so worth a failed experiment.
I’m up next weekend and want to get as much repainted as possible. Carpets are going down throughout in a few weeks time so obviously don’t want to paint after.

Re Country living from a townies perceptive, the council tax is whopping- possibly nearly £5000/yr for a house which cost £230,000- we’re appealing. Energy so far, v hard to tell. We’ve found a good log supplier but obviously over the summer and not being there all the time, I suspect we could spend £200/ month on logs. But we filled the oil tank for £670.
Getting there and back- we’ve settled into one of us driving and the other train, coach or flying- because of work schedules.
So many things which would make it impossible- kids in school, having to get up and out to work or even not being able to wfh from there just don’t apply. Let me find some photos.

The room was very tired blue tacked grubby white walls.
The thermometer was just last weekend and briefly, but we’ve been swimming in the reservoir most days were there since June.

It looks so lovely. Although can’t believe that council tax bill!

reservoirdawg · 15/09/2024 08:13

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross I’m desperately hoping it’s a mistake- second home premium and regrading from when it was extended 30 years ago.
Are you also south London based? Where are you thinking of?
