Keir Starmer's personality

dustcollective · 19/02/2024 11:35

Not so much a political commentary here or asking about people's voting intentions, but more about Starmer's personality- a lot of the press seems to paint Keir Starmer out to be "posh" and "boring / grey", however it seems he really isn't either of those things - having just read an extract from a biography of him. I had no idea how challenging his childhood was, his brothers needs, schoolyard fights or how emotionally abusive his father was - not letting them have tv in the house, insisting on silence at the dinner table, no hugging or warmth. I knew about his mums poor health but not to the extent that she / they suffered. It must have bed. So hard for the children.

I found it interesting that he hasn't really "mined" any of these experiences to sell himself and has kept most of it largely private. He's talked about his mums health and his dad being a toolmaker but hasn't shared much else and often comes across as somewhat rigid and dull. In some ways I suppose it's refreshing that he doesn't go on about his upbringing - a contrast to the likes of "Spare" etc - but also I feel he's not coming across as who he truly is. I now think so much more of him having read this and was quite surprised by it all.

Thanks Labour’s PR team.

I don’t care about his personality, I care about a women’s rights. That’s why he/labour won’t be getting my vote

Midnightrunners · 19/02/2024 11:42

Keir Starmer's personality : he doesn't have one. If you don't like his opinion he'll have 10 more you can chose from.

Brexile · 19/02/2024 11:43

The "posh" thing is a right wing smear campaign, albeit a half-arsed one compared to the insults Corbyn had to put up with. Obviously the blandness is strategic, like Kate Middleton's, and designed to avoid making enemies unnecessarily. I'm not sure it really works like that in politics, but.given that British PMs are basically anointed by the billionaire-owned gutter press, Starmer's actual personality or lack thereof won't be the deciding factor.

It's a politician thing.

I just love how people use the "smear campaign!" tactic for things like this as if videos of the people speaking don't exist.

DrunkenElephant · 19/02/2024 11:51

I’ll read that, but I don’t mind his personality anyway. I’d rather have a dull, calm personality than the absolute clowns of the previous PMs. I don’t want a circus running the country.

Wait for all the “he doesn’t know what a woman is comments though” while conveniently ignoring the fact that the Tory’s have done fuck all to protect women, and vital services TO protect women such as domestic violence shelters have been cut to the bone under their government.

MacaroonMacaron · 19/02/2024 11:51

I don’t think he’s posh. I do think he’s monotone, boring and grey.

OriginalUsername2 · 19/02/2024 11:52

I would like a dull leader. Just do the job properly like a jobsworth.

JobsLot · 19/02/2024 11:54

He could do with being a bit more enthusiastic and engaging I suppose. He comes across as though he doesn't really want to lead a government and is just doing the job so he can pay his mortgage. I suppose anything is better than the Tories though. We're not even going to have a country left if they get in again.

Exactly - just competent would do after years of inadequates.

countrygirl99 · 19/02/2024 12:01

Dull but competent is great. The current lot aren't dull but they certainly aren't competent either.

LittleGreenDragons · 19/02/2024 12:01

Thanks OP. Just that little snippet you've put has explained exactly why he hates women so much. He blames his mother.

Heshy · 19/02/2024 12:03

My heart sinks at the way UK politics is sliding towards the US style of 'vote for this person or that person!' rather than 'vote for these policies or those policies'.

Would you mind expanding on this? That didn’t come across to me and I’d (genuinely) be interested to hear your thoughts.

I think that's very unfair. It comes across how much he adores his mother and wanted to protect her.

Like I said, I was trying to discuss the way his personality comes across vs the reality / hidden depths of his background, rather than get into party politics.

countrygirl99 · 19/02/2024 12:10

Yeah. He hated his mother so much he financially supported her donkey sanctuary.
Honestly, some people Are just so desperate to find excuses to hate him.

Eyesopenwideawake · 19/02/2024 12:12

He comes across as earnest, honest, thoughtful, able to see both sides of an issue, hardworking and loyal.

Dunno about you but that's a pretty good combination for the leader of a country. Worked well for Obama.

Gloriosaford · 19/02/2024 12:14

Charismatic people are usually all 'front' & that's not what we want in a leader. The problem is that charismatic people are good at fooling people, good at putting on an act, getting others to trust and follow them- despite the fact that they are mostly all front.
We need sensible boring people . . . but they are too boring to attract followers 🤦🏼‍♀️

Oh god the Tory PR team have arrived. Could you please pass on a message to sunak to just fucking do the legislation NOW. Why i, if he actually gives a shit is he waiting, unless it's for votes?

@YouJustDoYou "I just love how people use the "smear campaign!" tactic for things like this as if videos of the people speaking don't exist."

About Starmer being posh, you mean? Are there videos of him being posh?

What a shallow, pathetic and toxic comment. People like you are more likely to make me support the trans cause.
