Keir Starmer's personality

dustcollective · 19/02/2024 11:35

Not so much a political commentary here or asking about people's voting intentions, but more about Starmer's personality- a lot of the press seems to paint Keir Starmer out to be "posh" and "boring / grey", however it seems he really isn't either of those things - having just read an extract from a biography of him. I had no idea how challenging his childhood was, his brothers needs, schoolyard fights or how emotionally abusive his father was - not letting them have tv in the house, insisting on silence at the dinner table, no hugging or warmth. I knew about his mums poor health but not to the extent that she / they suffered. It must have bed. So hard for the children.

I found it interesting that he hasn't really "mined" any of these experiences to sell himself and has kept most of it largely private. He's talked about his mums health and his dad being a toolmaker but hasn't shared much else and often comes across as somewhat rigid and dull. In some ways I suppose it's refreshing that he doesn't go on about his upbringing - a contrast to the likes of "Spare" etc - but also I feel he's not coming across as who he truly is. I now think so much more of him having read this and was quite surprised by it all.

Half and half. But he hasn't cancelled any of them.

Rishi Sunak’s five pledges: one year on | Institute for Government

Half and half?

The only one he’s achieved is halving inflation and that happened without him doing anything due to energy prices.

Otherwise, we’re in a recession and GDP per capita has been falling for months, debt is rising, small boats are up and so are waiting lists. Small boats may have come down at some point but that had a lot to do with the shit weather.

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 16:59

Ha ha. Imagine if the Tories scrapped getting rid of Non Dom status. "THE AWFUL TORIES ARE LOOKING AFTER THEIR FRIENDS!!!"

@LoveAHamSandwhich

Not quite half and half - if you use an up to date source. In fact it's one out of 5 if you concede that the 1980s tactic of reducing inflation by making sure no one has any bloody money is an acceptable outcome.

Probably the same as Reeves no bonus cap despite going against it earlier

The policies are folding, fine by me they were woeful

Elodie9 · 19/02/2024 17:03

Half and half ? Pardon? It says reducing inflation has been achieved (mind you people are aware that reducing the rate of inflation rising does not mean prices are falling you know), grow the economy is on track, get debt falling is in doubt, cut waiting lists is off track and also stop the boats is off track.
I am rather underwhelmed I must say,

Oh yes, now that Labour are sucking up to big business, the bonus cap has gone! Fancy that.

Yes, it's much harder to meet a pledge if you don't just cancel it outright. Funny, that.

The Nom Dom has quietly been dropped, the status is not being scrapped anymore

Fanfare about that one at the time but it was glaringly obvious the impact of scrapping

Has it been dropped? The Labour website still mentions "ending the non-dom tax break for the very wealthy" several times.

Labour are no longer going to end the non dom tax break. They are goign to "modernise" it 🤔 They really should update their website...

Read to the bottom of the page I linked to. Growing The Economy is on track.

That is not the same as achieved. Also that analysis was published on 3rd Jan 2024. I think something has happened since then? Now what was it? Oh yes!

Can't read that as it is behind a paywall. However, surely "modernising the non dom tax break" can include mean closing loop holes, so not inaccurate for them to say that.

Yes they should

And it was obvious to anyone with half a brain when it was announced

They are slow

Still that’s three policies that they’ve realised are poor or numerically challenged.

One to go

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 16:42

They only had one big pledge. One big thing. And now - they don't.

No, it is not politically astute to make a MASSIVE PLEDGE that you cannot possibly back up.

They still have it. It’s just got to be scaled back to the sheer disaster the Tories have brought down on the economy. They can’t back up ANY PLEDGE right now because they don’t know how much further the Tories will fuck up (whether through incompetence or actually deliberately to salt the earth).

No, it was 2024 (typo on my behalf, now corrected), but same point applies.

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 16:21

Oh well good luck on that, Labour have just cancelled their biggest pre-manifesto pledge. The one thing they have ever actually pledged to do.

Labour cuts £28bn green investment pledge by half | Labour | The Guardian

I think investing in green tech could help lift us out of recession. We are way behind China on this, and it could open up new jobs, markets and opportunities. It's the future and could be good for the country.

cardibach · 19/02/2024 17:17

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 16:31

Do you think it was politically sound to make a pledge four years ago, and expect to stick to it? When you're not even in power yet?!

Of course they are blaming the Tories. The economy, however, isn't much worse than it was. Labour have just realised that it was going to be a millstone around their neck going into an election. So they ditched it. Having made all those noises and pledges about being a Green Government.

The next thing they'll ditch will be committing to "clean power" by 2030. I'm sure that will be the Tories' fault as well...

Let's look at these commitments, and count them as they cancel them...

Switch on Great British Energy – The Labour Party

Ahhh…so they are wrong to not publish a plan but they are also wrong to publish one?
I get you.
You would rather they just fucked off and let the Tories get on with the asset stripping.

cardibach · 19/02/2024 17:19

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 16:55

Labour have told us what their plans are. But they only had two pledges - one of which they have reneged on.

They have 5 missions. Have you read them? I linked them earlier.

newnamethanks · 19/02/2024 17:21

As James O'Brien would say "let's smear Keir". I take it everyone knows about the 🍺? And the billionaire gold plated donkeys? Who needs a personality when the Tories will make one up for you no matter what you're like.? If ever you need a barrister and he or she comes into court behaving like Bozo, do yourself a favour and plead guilty. It'll pay off in the long run.

IClaudine · 19/02/2024 17:23

Meanwhile, talking of quietly dropping things...not much fanfare from the Tories on this:

stormy4319trevor · 19/02/2024 17:24

I'm not worried about personality as much as integrity. Starmer has maybe not had a chance to prove his, but I'm dubious about Reeves since allegations of plagiarism in her book. I have no respect for that at all, it is dishonest.

Brexile · 19/02/2024 17:26

YouJustDoYou · 19/02/2024 11:47

I just love how people use the "smear campaign!" tactic for things like this as if videos of the people speaking don't exist.

A lot of things get cherry picked and quoted out of context.

ScierraDoll · 19/02/2024 17:27

I have been in meetings with him when I was working. I was very surprised when he entered politics and even more surprised when he became LOTO.
A cold man I found, who could be vindictive when crossed.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 19/02/2024 17:30

I will be more than happy with Starmer as PM as after the shitshow that was Johnson I feel it best not to vote on personality. Remember the absolute lies that man told " no checks" 40 new hospitals, HS2, new social care reform, baN no fault evictions. AND most dropped as the chancellor of the time who is now 3rd chance and hopefully last chance PM pretends none of this is anything to do with him - he will just turn the page over and write 5 new pledges. Nobody voted for his fecking plan!!
We need a new Government, the last 14 years have been beyond dire. I am hoping the election is sooner rather than later as

  1. I cannot stand to read any more community noted posts from our actual government!
  2. BLaming every single thing that is wrong on immigration.
