Keir Starmer's personality

dustcollective · 19/02/2024 11:35

Not so much a political commentary here or asking about people's voting intentions, but more about Starmer's personality- a lot of the press seems to paint Keir Starmer out to be "posh" and "boring / grey", however it seems he really isn't either of those things - having just read an extract from a biography of him. I had no idea how challenging his childhood was, his brothers needs, schoolyard fights or how emotionally abusive his father was - not letting them have tv in the house, insisting on silence at the dinner table, no hugging or warmth. I knew about his mums poor health but not to the extent that she / they suffered. It must have bed. So hard for the children.

I found it interesting that he hasn't really "mined" any of these experiences to sell himself and has kept most of it largely private. He's talked about his mums health and his dad being a toolmaker but hasn't shared much else and often comes across as somewhat rigid and dull. In some ways I suppose it's refreshing that he doesn't go on about his upbringing - a contrast to the likes of "Spare" etc - but also I feel he's not coming across as who he truly is. I now think so much more of him having read this and was quite surprised by it all.

@LittleGreenDragons thats incredibly unpleasant and total nonsense. Where in the article does he articulate in any way that he hates his mother? Vile.

ShareTheDuvet · 19/02/2024 14:03

@LittleGreenDragons you clearly don’t understand a thing about psychology to make such a leap. 🙄

WulfWuman · 19/02/2024 14:04

He would do better if he changed his name to Kyiv. Or even Kyir, if he didn't want to go full NATO.

IClaudine · 19/02/2024 14:07

That Times piece is very favorable towards him. I guess they have decided which horse to back.

ShareTheDuvet · 19/02/2024 14:14

@Runningwildish yes the Tories policies for women are amazing - totally convinced me. Plunging millions of women and children into poverty and destroying the public sector mainly staffed by women are proper vote winners. Go Kemi! 🙄

Indeed.

I think Kemi is working on some legislation. I actually think the Tories are going for the women's vote so they need something in the bag. They've been doing stuff with free childcare care as well.

OH that's OK then. I'll stop worrying about the fact that they've systematically destroyed the country on every level over the last 14 years. Let's give them another go then.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 19/02/2024 15:22

He seems like a decent and hardworking man. A big contrast to the other side.

BLT2024 · 19/02/2024 15:24

Eyesopenwideawake · 19/02/2024 12:12

He comes across as earnest, honest, thoughtful, able to see both sides of an issue, hardworking and loyal.

Dunno about you but that's a pretty good combination for the leader of a country. Worked well for Obama.

agree with you 100% - it's a shame however that he doesn't have the charisma of Obama to get the public to be engaged with what he's saying, I could have listened to Obama for hours!

CantDealwithChristmas · 19/02/2024 15:24

I think he seems honest and competent enough. Certainly better than the current lot. if I could have faith that he will protect women's sex based rights then I would vote for him.

Got my doubts about his parliamentary party tho.

AnnPerkins · 19/02/2024 15:39

I don't think he's dull or boring, he's just ordinary. I'm from an ordinary background and he's like lots of people I know. I can't think of a leader of any party, past or current, that I could have said that about before.

That said, he has achieved rather more than most of us and I respect him for it.

keffie12 · 19/02/2024 15:45

@ddustcollective I totally agree. Have a listen to this podcast with JOB . It's really good. The quiet man with more about him than anyone realises. I hope others listen to it, too

😂 he is extremely dull. Maybe try doing PR about the actual policy next time.

3/10

What have the Tories actually done for sex based rights other than make noises? All the current problems are there after 14 years of the Tories in power. Judge them on actions not words.

HermioneWeasley · 19/02/2024 11:40

Thanks Labour’s PR team.

I don’t care about his personality, I care about a women’s rights. That’s why he/labour won’t be getting my vote

Same. Starmer and Labour will shit all over women's rights and will also fail to safeguard children from genderfuckery.

I was impressed by Kemi Badenoch, she seems to understand that sex is rotted in biology and that women are a sex class.

However Kier does not seem to understand this as he thinks women can have penises. Which they do not.

It's odd because the materiality of sex class is a basic of dialectical materialism as expounded by Lenin and Engels so as a socialist this should be basic stuff for Kier.

Runningwildish · 19/02/2024 15:54

The trouble is , Keir and his party aren't even making the right noises about women's rights.
im happy to have a dull PM. But not one whose got splinters in his arse trying to keep the TRAs onside.
if Keir put Rosie Duffield in his shadow cabinet and publicly admonished her bullies, the Labour Party might get my vote.

No, that's not why you won't vote Labour.

AdamRyan · 19/02/2024 16:02

I love him. He did loads for vulnerable victims when he was DPP, and had a real focus on improving rape convictions. He's very good at PMQs. He's managed to unite Labour after the corbyn shitshow.
I don't care about his voice or his hair, I care about having a PM who can actually start fixing the country and at the moment he's head and shoulders above everyone in terms of track record and policies so it's a no brainer for me.

How do you know this?

It’s pretty arrogant isn’t it.

CatherineCawoodsScarf · 19/02/2024 16:07

I don’t understand why his personality matters so much, given that Rishi Sunak doesn’t seem to have much of one either? He’s not competing with Boris Johnson anymore.

It's so true
I keep seeing this photo of Sunak looking like a sad gerbil, but noone seems to mention it

@EasternStandard

Oh dear, integrity is in short supply these days. People vote Tory because they are Tories. It makes no logical sense to vote Tory to support women's health, rights and freedoms. Their record on these things is atrocious. Latching on to the trans issue has been very convenient for those secret, self-interested Tories who know they should be ashamed of themselves.
