Celeriac query

Without googling, would you know what is was and how to prepare it?
1st time growing them and have been offering them to friends and neighbours. Nearly everyone has never tried one nor prepared one.
Am I the only one who uses them often?

Use them constantly but we live in Central Europe.

RoseyLentil · 18/02/2024 15:48

Yes. We have it quite often. Soup, roasted, mashed as a side or as a topping for shepherds pie yummy 😋

DrRichardWebber · 18/02/2024 15:48

I love love love celeriac. I would make mash out of it personally. Also love it roasted as a steak

RoseyLentil · 18/02/2024 15:48

I'm in south west England 👍

TakeMe2Insanity · 18/02/2024 15:49

Yes. Love it finely chopped in salad.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 18/02/2024 15:50

I love Celeriac. Celeriac chips, coated in a little oil and done in the oven are nice.

nbee84 · 18/02/2024 15:51

Yes, I make a few varieties of celeriac soups.

Celeriac, potato and mushroom.
Celeriac and sweet potato.
Celeriac, parsnip and apple.

Scottishskifun · 18/02/2024 15:52

Yes and I love them. They are a ugly veg though so many people walk past them generally I think!

ginasevern · 18/02/2024 15:54

Celeriac is wonderful and so versatile. I could understand your friends not knowing how to prepare it but for absolutely none of them to have ever heard of it is a bit odd.

DramaAlpaca · 18/02/2024 15:56

I know what celeriac is and what to do with it, but I wouldn't bother as I don't like the texture or the taste. It's one of the very few vegetables I dislike. That and celery, funnily enough. They must be related.

TroysMammy · 18/02/2024 16:00

I've grown them unsuccessfully. I have made cream of celeriac soup with a drizzle of truffle oil which I enjoyed. However when I made it a second time I thought "nah, this isn't for me". It's too much like baby food and also looks like baby milk sick.

They are related. Oddly I can't stand celery - it truly is the Devil's food. Ruins everything it touches. But I love celeriac.

A gratin of some sort, or roasted in cubes, would be my choice. I'm less of a fan of it mashed, but would happily eat it that way too.

AdaColeman · 18/02/2024 16:58

Yes, I would know what do do with celeriac. I like it, especially as celeriac remoulade, or also roasted wedges as you would roast parsnips. I'd have been glad to have one given to me by a kind neighbour!

Precipice · 18/02/2024 17:00

I put it in when I make soup. Almost all my soups have the same base of vegetables before whatever is going to make it X soup.

chopinwaltz26 · 18/02/2024 17:44

One of my favourite vegetables. Can use it in lots of different ways, so very versatile.
Best use I have made of it was to poach with potatoes in milk, then puree to serve with wild boar in red wine. Delicious.

JosieRay · 18/02/2024 17:46

We grow it then mash it with potato or roast it, but the most delicious so far is celeriac gratin with cream, cheese and leeks…BBC Good Food.

viques · 18/02/2024 17:47

Celeriac remoulade is one of my favourite salads.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/02/2024 17:47

I usually make mash out of it. Whizz in a tin of butterbeans and you've got yourself a delicious low carb cottage pie topping 🤤

Davros · 18/02/2024 17:50

Mmm celeriac remoulade with smoked salmon or gravadlax

Nadja0fAntipaxos · 18/02/2024 17:51

The veg box delivers it, I cook it, the kids complain about it, and then I remember to ban it from the next veg box. It’s not bad, but it does make my heart sink - oh god, I’ve got to DO SOMETHING with it

PonyPatter44 · 18/02/2024 17:54

I love celeriac! I wish I knew someone that grew it. I like celeriac remoulade, and celeriac gratin.

Plump82 · 18/02/2024 17:55

A restaurant near me that only does roast dinners uses celeriac for their vegetarian option. I wasn't thrilled with the thought of it but it was absolutely delicious. It was just described as roasted celeriac so didn't give much away on how was prepped but I really enjoyed it.

BurbageBrook · 18/02/2024 18:25

Yes - delicious mashed, especially if roasted and then mashed.

BeyondMyWits · 18/02/2024 18:33

Celeriac and cumin soup is so delicious, I first had it in hospital and had to make it when I got home - it had made that much of an impression .... up til then I knew what it looked like, but I had never tried it.

StillSmallVoice · 18/02/2024 18:38

Another vote for celeriac remoulade. Julienned and mixed with mustards mayo.

Also great in a coleslaw, whether with a vinaigrette or mayo again.

I have also used it in place of green papaya in the Thai salad. Completely different dish, but it soaks up the flavours pretty well.

As with others, mashed, roasted, soups.

And my brother, who follows a mad keto diet will eat it.
