Celeriac query

Without googling, would you know what is was and how to prepare it?
1st time growing them and have been offering them to friends and neighbours. Nearly everyone has never tried one nor prepared one.
Am I the only one who uses them often?

John Torode pronounces it like that too. We both shout at the telly every time he says it!

I made celeriac purée and celeriac crisps for Christmas dinner in December and I was the only person there who had ever eaten it before out of 7 of us.

I love it raw and shredded in homemade coleslaw or instead of celery in a Waldorf salad (I'm not a big celery fan). And as purée or mash it's so much nicer than potato IMO.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/02/2024 13:31

I use it for soup, stew, roast, mash, chips, coleslaw, dauphinoise with potatoes.

They are related. Oddly I can't stand celery - it truly is the Devil's food. Ruins everything it touches. But I love celeriac

Im exactly the same, and can't figure out why I like one and not the other.

I have only been using celeriac fairly recently as it turned up in a veg box, and use it mainly mixed up with other root veg in roasts and mashes.

Was thrilled to find a remoulade in Waitrose. Vile. Horribly sweet. Be warned, fans.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has a fantastic recipe for celeriac "steak" that I'll dig out if anyone's interested.

Oh yes please, unless it is in River Cottage Veg Every Day as my sister has that so can get her to take me a photo of it

I (and DC) love them but DH dislikes the flavour of celery and celeriac.
Fun fact: The Ood in Dr Who were modelled from celeriac.
They make the most delicious soup.

My dad used to grow them and likened their appearance to Medusa’s head. But I can definitely see something of Cthulu in a celeriac.

LoveAHamSandwhich · 19/02/2024 18:26

Love it, but only to make remoulade.

purplecorkheart · 19/02/2024 18:41

Love it but tend just to make mash with it. Used to visit a hotel that had a celeriac, fennel and bacon (smoked) lasagne. I have tried to recreate but failed.

@viques

Do you have a favourite recipe?

Do you have one that's egg free?

@FabFebHalfTerm

it needs Mayo so you would need an egg free one. I usually just buy in Waitrose because a whole celeriac makes more remoulade than I can deal with!

KirstenBlest · 19/02/2024 18:46

I eat it quite often. My favourite root veg after carrots.

catwithflowers · 19/02/2024 18:47

Celeriac is a staple of low-carbers. We have it lots, remoulade, dauphinoise, purée, mash and occasionally as chips!

Sweetdreams98 · 19/02/2024 18:48

I had never tried it before or even registered its existence until I was served a carrot and celeriac grated salad at a friend's house and it was delicious.
Now, I buy it maybe once a month.
Peeling it is a pain, especially the bottom!

PaintedPottery · 19/02/2024 19:31

Yes. I eat a lot of it. Mostly roasted or chipped.

@viques

ah right. I like the Waitrose one too!😊

I have egg free mayo & Dijon so I'll give it a go when I feel better (currently have an awful cold & doesn't appeal at all).

I tried to grow them, but a complete failure so well done.
