Celeriac query

CJ4713 · 18/02/2024 15:44

Without googling, would you know what is was and how to prepare it?
1st time growing them and have been offering them to friends and neighbours. Nearly everyone has never tried one nor prepared one.
Am I the only one who uses them often?

I love it but it makes me fart like a bastard.

CJ4713 · 18/02/2024 19:02

I'm glad I'm not the only one then.

@StillSmallVoice I have also used it in place of green papaya in the Thai salad
I make som tam all the time, and I never thought to use celeriac! Brilliant! Thanks

@Bunnyhair You aren't thinking of jerusalem artichokes are you? The inulin makes them very farty 😊

OP posts:
Bunnyhair · 18/02/2024 19:04

@CJ4713 those too, but celeriac definitely wreaks havoc on my guts!

soupfiend · 18/02/2024 19:08

I know it. And it knows me

It is a bastard to cut up.

I hate it for that reason

AnguaResurgam · 18/02/2024 19:09

Love it as remoulade (but prefer to buy that ready made)

I have made soups with it, but find the blighters damned difficult to cut up (too resistant)

HowDoWeDoThisPlease · 18/02/2024 19:10

I’m guessing most people who click on the post are celeriac lovers. We use it fairly often as a potato replacement, so say in a lamb boulangere, as chips or roasted. Also makes a blinding gratin. Make a remoulade, or soup with them also.

soupfiend · 18/02/2024 19:10

viques · 18/02/2024 17:47

Celeriac remoulade is one of my favourite salads.

Edited

God I love this, its so hard (almost impossible) to find in shops though and we dont have any cutsie delis near us

Also another fact about celeriac is that I HATE the way Marcus Waring pronounces it.

cathyandclaire · 18/02/2024 19:10

Love celeriac- I'm a low carber and use it in Dauphinoise, soup and as a topping for shepherd's pie and fish pie.

Happyher · 18/02/2024 19:11

Yes I usually roast or mash them but don’t use them often as they’re hard to peal

TotemPolly · 18/02/2024 19:11

Yes as a vegetarian family we often have the Jamie Oliver zombie brain ( delish ) as our Sunday roast.

If anyone doesn’t like chopping celeriac, then adding Jerusalem artichokes into the mix too might be a step to far.

I defy anyone not to love this soup though! Haven’t even made the croutons, as it doesn’t need.

Vous devez comprendre! Une chose simple - c'est beau!

In the sun, in the rain, a vegetable close to my earth and my heart.

Avec des noix et un goût piquant de pomme, c'est le paradis. Une langoustine au coin du feu, avec un morceau de pain fait maison et une bouteille de bordeaux, quoi d'autre, vraiment quoi d'autre ?

Love it, favourite recipes include soup, remoulade, diced roasted with thyme, and chips.

I agree, Waitrose is the only place I know. In France every supermarket sells it. sad face emoticon!

ODFOx · 18/02/2024 22:53

I (and DC) love them but DH dislikes the flavour of celery and celeriac.
Fun fact: The Ood in Dr Who were modelled from celeriac.
They make the most delicious soup.

SmashedPrawnsInAMilkyBasket · 18/02/2024 22:56

I love it! Remoulade is my favourite salad. Also delicious mashed, or made into a sort of dauphinoise in place of potatoes. I’ve got one in the fridge right now!

newnamethanks · 18/02/2024 22:58

Remoulade, yum. Mashed with butter and or cream. I like it but its a pain to peel so don't use it often.

WhereYouLeftIt · 18/02/2024 23:05

Ooh, I was cooking with celeriac today! As per usual, I was replacing potato with celeriac. I've made this JO dish a couple of times and decided I would mess about with it. It calls for sweet potato and potato, I thought I'd try it with other combinations (turnip is lined up for another variation).

MolkosTeenageAngst · 18/02/2024 23:07

I think know what it is but never cooked one, if I had to cook it without googling I’d probably do it like a root vegetable but I wouldn’t feel completely comfortable I knew what I was doing!

chattyness · 18/02/2024 23:10

I love celeriac , hard to get here but I can get them in my tesco delivery. I love it mashed with other root veggies, roasted ,or in soup, so delicious. I don't think they're hard to peel though, they just a bit rough and bumpy round the woody, rooty ends . I use a big sharp knife and it's easy to cut through and easy to chop up too, when I first bought one I thought they'd be rock hard like a Swede, but they're way softer.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 18/02/2024 23:11

I love remoulade and it's worth the time to julienne the celeriac. Also love it cubed and roasted with other winter veg and mashed.

Shitlord · 18/02/2024 23:13

Yes sure! Soups mainly tbh but in veggie stews too and grated in winter salad. I usually buy reduced

crackofdoom · 18/02/2024 23:14

I do, but I remember my introduction to it. I was temping as a chef in some country pub in Somerset in my 20s, and the veg lady from the farmers market outside wanders in with a box of unsold veg for us as thanks for giving her free coffee. "What on earth is THAT?!" "It's celeriac, make soup out of it!" So I did, with blue cheese, and very nice it was too.

It makes a lovely dauphinoise- I couldn't get a cauliflower for Christmas cauliflower cheese, so I made celeriac dauphinoise instead.

Actually managed to grow some on my allotment this year, thanks to the monsoon conditions 🙄. They're much smaller than the ones in the shops, but also much more tender and easy to chop.

WulfWuman · 18/02/2024 23:17

I do cook with it now but I only became aware of it at all around 15 years ago.
