Celeriac query

91 replies

CJ4713 · 18/02/2024 15:44

Without googling, would you know what is was and how to prepare it?
1st time growing them and have been offering them to friends and neighbours. Nearly everyone has never tried one nor prepared one.
Am I the only one who uses them often?

God I love this, its so hard (almost impossible) to find in shops though and we dont have any cutsie delis near us

Also another fact about celeriac is that I HATE the way Marcus Waring pronounces it.

Where do you live? Tesco sells it here( South Wales). It's one of my most favourite vegetables, I love the taste, eat it frequently.

RegimentalSturgeon · 19/02/2024 00:07

Cubed and roasted with rosemary is also good. Celeriac and apple soup (one Granny Smith to half a large celeriac) with shredded prosciutto scattered over the top is delicious.
And céleri rémoulade, one of the best of salads.

QueenBitch666 · 19/02/2024 00:08

Celeriac air fried chips with sriracha mayonnaise ( mines vegan ) bloody lush

I love Celeriac. Celeriac chips, coated in a little oil and done in the oven are nice.

We do them in the air fryer, or mash them. Having one tomorrow

I usually make mash out of it. Whizz in a tin of butterbeans and you've got yourself a delicious low carb cottage pie topping 🤤

Genius 👌

Yes my daughter was on the keto diet between the ages of 3-5. I’ve cooked hundreds of celeriacs!

nbee84 · 19/02/2024 09:41

@GGetWhatYouWant She's saying she can't get ready made celeriac remoulade. Celeriac is available in all supermarkets I've been in.

i heard marcus waring pronounce it wrong the other week,
ridiculous, why is he so wrong

i have had celeriac once or twice, first bought it when reduced

I know what celeriac is and what to do with it, but I wouldn't bother as I don't like the texture or the taste. It's one of the very few vegetables I dislike. That and celery, funnily enough. They must be related.

@DramaAlpaca

Have you tried it a few times?

the first time I cooked it, the smell was disgusting & it didn't taste any better!!

but I'm a low carbing vegetarian & was getting desperate for some 'mash' so tried it again & although it was 'strong' (like brussel sprouts, it wasn't unpleasant & tasted 'ok'

id still rather have potato mash, but considering the carb difference, it'll do!

im going to start using it raw too.

DramaAlpaca · 19/02/2024 10:28

@FabFebHalfTerm yes, I still think it's horrible!

FabFebHalfTerm · 19/02/2024 10:30

JosieRay · 18/02/2024 17:46

We grow it then mash it with potato or roast it, but the most delicious so far is celeriac gratin with cream, cheese and leeks…BBC Good Food.

@JosieRay

thank you for that, it's gone on my list to try!! Looks good!!

viques · 18/02/2024 17:47

Celeriac remoulade is one of my favourite salads.

Edited

@viques

Do you have a favourite recipe?

Do you have one that's egg free?

ScrambledSmegs · 19/02/2024 10:34

Yes. I love it, can eat buckets of celeriac rémoulade in the summer. They sell it in my local Aldi sometimes so it can't be that unusual.

minipie · 19/02/2024 10:36

You’ve all inspired me to add it to the shopping list. Thanks

BIWI · 19/02/2024 10:38

@FabFebHalfTerm if you add a couple of leeks, sliced and pan-fried in butter, to the celeriac, and then mash them together, it gives it a texture much closer to mashed potato.

mash it and add butter and cream - lovely, or slice into thick chunky chips and roast for 25 mins at 180 with salt and pepper and a sprinkle or herbs or garlic for fries. Also can grate it and add sauce for remoulade (think posh coleslaw). it's a great low carb potato substitute too.

hard to understand 🤣 I just want to persuade you it's good! But I'll leave you be!! 😊

ScrambledSmegs · 19/02/2024 10:46

If anyone wants to make their own rémoulade this one from the Everyday French Chef is a good recipe, although I add the mustard to taste as 4 teaspoons can often prove a little strong for guests. You can use egg-free mayo and I often use shop bought, I know some think that's heretical but it makes life easier.

Also note that it says 1 whole celeriac but if you read further on you actually only need about 2 cups worth, about a quarter of a large or half a small one.

Céléri rémoulade

Celeriac remoulade This classic French pairing of celeriac with a mustardy mayonnaise creates a creamy, crunchy salad with bite. It is typically served as part of the mixed vegetable plate known as…

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall has a fantastic recipe for celeriac "steak" that I'll dig out if anyone's interested.

CurlewKate · 19/02/2024 10:53

Marcus Waring's pronunciation is odd. I'm on edge each new series until he's said it once- then I'm OK!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/02/2024 10:56

Usually make 'chips' (oven cooked) with it. Really like the flavour.

commanderprimate · 19/02/2024 12:13

How do you get it to grow well? Mine always do ok then go squidgy and rotten before they're big enough to eat

CJ4713 · 19/02/2024 12:45

How does Marcus Wareing pronounce it? 🤔

OP posts:
CurlewKate · 19/02/2024 13:07

Marcus says CELery-ac.
