Did anyone guess the twist in Sixth Sense when you first watched it?

Spoiler below

When watching the sixth sense for the first time, did anyone guess that Bruce Willis was dead before it got revealed?

I just watched it now and it feels SO obvious! I feel like if I watched it for the first time in 2024 I would’ve guessed. But back when it came out I didn’t

I did actually guess before I saw it from an ill-judged trailer which for some insane reason showed Bruce being shot, immediately followed by the child saying "I see dead people, hallo Bruce" (I paraphrase).

Also, all the publicity was relentless that "it's a ghost story! there's an amazing twist!" and there is only ever one twist in a ghost story: someone who you think is alive is actually a ghost.

It's still a good movie though. You can have lots of fun watching Bruce failing to work it out and seeing the mechanics.

My parents always used to have Radio 4 on whilst we were having dinner. We were eating one night and The Sixth Sense was being reviewed on Front Row. None of us had been to see it. The twist was mentioned. My Mum rolled her eyes and said "oh for god sake, the twist will be that..." and guessed correctly.

His delusions are protrayed as real, including real characters. Although I thought that wasn't really a twist. Because even as he pointed out, the girl never grew up.

That's not a twist!

It's dramatic effect. It's fairly clear what his medical condition is so there's no 'twist'. Even if you didn't know who he was before watching the movie.

the80sweregreat · 13/02/2024 19:44

I didn't see the twist at all.
Second watch of it and I was like ' oh yeah ' ..

I was surprised that his friend wasn’t real. Maybe I’m thick, but there you go.

It pops up in articles about film plot twists. So it’s not just me. 😁

@Cheeesus

Not saying you are thick! And it's a long time since I've watched the movie, and I read the book first anyway.

Just noting that it's not a twist when it's based on a real-person with a condition that's clearly known!

Aposterhasnoname · 13/02/2024 19:48

Yes. But I’d been told there was a huge twist and I’d never guess it, so obviously I spent the whole film trying to work it out. I got it when he sat down for the meal (anniversary meal maybe, it was years ago when I saw it) with his wife and she ignored him.

I heard there was an amazing twist, and tried to guess it! Turned out to be right, although watching the start of the restaurant meeting, I thought I was wrong - then in the closing seconds of the scene, realised I was probably right!

Same happened to me, had heard about the twist, tried to guess it, and the guess I made 5 minutes before I watched it on DVD turned out go be right. Spent the whole film looking for something to show I was wrong, and was so disappointed to be right, as I missed out on the 'wow didn't seen coming' experience the friend I was watching it with had.

C1N1C · 13/02/2024 19:52

No to Sixth Sense

I guessed How I Met Your Mother's 'twist' after a few episodes (really annoyed my wife as she was expecting me to be amazed at the finale).

Ha oh don’t worry, I was just being silly. I think for most people it was a twist.

notknowledgeable · 13/02/2024 19:54

Yes, it was so obvious I got bored and never finished watching the film

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/02/2024 19:56

Yes, and I think it was obvious if you knew in advance that there was a big plot twist.

SouthLondonMum22 · 13/02/2024 19:57

I didn't guess it but I also didn't know about any big twist, I think I would've done otherwise.

ani4ani · 13/02/2024 19:57

Yes, I guessed when his wife was at the restaurant (about 3/4 way through I think?) 'waiting' for him to arrive.

I just finished watching how I met your mother for the first time a few weeks ago. Which twist do you mean?

DyslexicPoster · 13/02/2024 19:58

No. Great dilm

LenaLamont · 13/02/2024 20:01

Yes, because I could see how he and his wife didn't directly interact.

RestingPassportFace · 13/02/2024 20:02

Yes and I was fuming. All I was doing was reading the Odeon pamphlet summing up all the films and Sixth Sense synopsis flagged Bruce getting shot at the start. I shouldn't have been able to make the leap but had heard there was a twist, so my mind went there before the bloody titles had even started.
I was very good at keeping it to myself though so as not to spoil it for DH.

ItsAStupidQuestion · 13/02/2024 20:06

Skillest · 13/02/2024 19:20

I didn't.

SPOILER ALERT

I also didn't see The Others twist.

I also started watching From Dusk Til Dawn thinking it was a normal film and had the (expected) What The Actual Fuck?! moment part way through.

I didn't guess it.

Same as the PP, I settled down to watch From Dusk Till Dawn thinking nothing of it, then an hour in - 😱

I did however, guess the twist in Primal Fear 👏

SilkandSteel1 · 13/02/2024 20:07

Yes, totally obvious to me. I remember asking my friend at the cinema what the big twist was, and he said it was that he was dead. Couldn't believe he hadn't seen it too, as I said in the apartment with the boy, the mother clearly couldn't see him, and the anniversary meal in the restaurant, the table was only set for one

ooooohnoooooo · 13/02/2024 20:07

Yes, on the first 5 minutes.

SilkandSteel1 · 13/02/2024 20:08

Scootboot · 13/02/2024 19:18

FFS spoilers much!?

Oh come off it, the film's been around donkey's years

ItsAStupidQuestion · 13/02/2024 20:09

Oh, and the twist in Shutter Island was a shock too.

asterel · 13/02/2024 20:09

Yes, but my job involves working with narrative structures so it’s a rare plot twist that gets past me! I always spot them and wish I didn’t really 😂

Pootle40 · 13/02/2024 20:12

I didn't see it coming when I saw it in the cinema. Once you know it seems so obvious. Especially the restaurant 'conversation' with his wife.
