I am shocked, I was listening to him on Sunday. My heart goes out to his family

Oh my goodness. Very unexpected and very sad for his family.

I admit I haven't listened to him since his Radio 1 days in the 80s/early 90s – I loved his show – but what a horrible shock.

Poor Sara Cox sounded devastated

It does sound sudden, they were advertising a show he was doing this week.

Gosh that's sudden, I'm sure I was only reading about him doing a new radio show the other day.

His show last Sunday was pre recorded according to the BBC, it does seem very sudden though.

Even though I wasn't really a fan it feels like a shock as he's been almost a constant presence on the radio since my teens (when he was on radio 1) and for years - until fairly recently - at work (radio 2)

He was lined up to launch another couple of BBC Radio stations. This is so sad. 🥺

That is such sad news and sounds like it was sudden. He had only recently taken over the Chart Show and had also started a second Long Songs type show.

Really shocked by this and yes Sara sounded so upset. RIP, another gone way too soon.

So sad. He was such a good presenter, unlike the rubbish that passes for DJs on Radio 2 now.

This is so sad. I absolutely loved listening ti him all through the years.

We used to listen to him in the car in the 90s going home from school. Loved him
on radio two. He was so fun to listen to.

So so sad. I still was loyal to Steve and very much part of my 80s childhood. Rest in peace.

How sad, always reminded me of my youth. Will miss him on Sunday mornings.

Just heard, wondered if he had been poorly. But if he was on the radio on Sunday. Very sudden.

He mentioned on his show last year that his dad was still alive. Poor, poor gent, outliving his child.

I think that Steve proposed to his wife on air in the 1980s.

A long career. I thought he was rather like marmite, you loved his shows or didn't, but he was talented.

His show was a landmark of a British afternoon for so many years. You might groan and roll your eyes (and I suspect he sometimes meant for you to) at some of it but in so many offices, trucks, workshops and homes, that was the afternoon.

69 far too young, life is very unfair sometimes.
