It's interesting to note that Sunak's posturing about the definition of a woman doesn't seem to have helped him too much.

But then it automatically played Rees Mogg saying conservative+ reform had a greater vote share than Labour

I love Damien Egan. He seems like a sweetheart (local to me so I see him on the news). Great acceptance speech
Also like hearing a Brizzle accent. Makes a change from Rees Moggs drawl.

Who's the bloke behind him with the light blue rosette? He seems to be quite happy about the result.

DuncinToffee · 16/02/2024 10:08

Reform is being promoted on Gbeebies, which is presented by Tories

Mogg was in Wellingborough as a GB presenter, which is raising questions.

You mean when is a news channel a news channel?

And when is an MP an MP and not a reporter?

Think it's the reform candidate

I have no interest in making politics my career - in fact, I have promised to donate my entire net MP salary to local Kingswood charities.Kingswood as a constituency will not exist at the next election so this is a unique opportunity to send rotten Westminster a seismic message that they cannot ignore and begin the process of radical change. The Conservative Party has pushed our country to the brink. National debt and taxes at record highs. Soaring NHS waiting lists. Broken public services. Crime through the roof. No growth in the economy. Vast numbers of healthy, capable people unfairly claiming benefits. Mass immigration undermining our economy and social fabric.Grin

I so agree with this. My DC lives not far from there, and she says he is really appreciated in the area from what she knows. Moggy sounded soooo out of place in Kingswood! A right tit.
The Brizzle accent is very mild compared to some... who can forget Brenda from Bristol, a hero to me and my kids, in that.. when we it's appropriate I do a Brenda saying 'what another one?!'
For anyone who doesn't know about Brenda and her view on another election... here we are.. bless her

There was an interesting comment from John Curtice about election turnout in general.

It has always surprised me how low election turnout is - and how when you look at age bands, it's much lower in younger age bands than in older age bands.

Enthusing people, giving them something to vote for, especially the younger generation, and making sure they can vote easily (Voter ID - looking at you), ensuring they are on the electoral register - so that constituencies are fair - basically engaging people is so important.

The Brexit referendum got a turnout of 72%.

The 2019 election turnout was 67.3%

That is a LOT of registered voters not voting - and we don't even know about the unregistered voters

placemats · 16/02/2024 10:24

Gen Kitchen's win has given me hope for the constituency I live in - Tory and never changed.

Perhaps we can hope and work hard for that all important change.

newnamethanks · 16/02/2024 10:24

I've just heard Richly on the radio stating, over and over, Keir Srarmer has no plan. He has got a plan, Mr Sunak, and its simple and straightforward. The plan is to boot out you and your bunch of liggers and carpetbaggers as soon as possible. I hope that's clear enough for you to grasp.

Notonthestairs · 16/02/2024 10:26

I think that the Tories underestimate voters.
We registered how austerity impacted (and continues to impact) public services, we know that Brexit came about in part as a response to austerity (fanned by the likes of Banks and Farage), we know that (elements of) the Conservatives sponsored Brexit, the promises about access to the single market, and oven ready deals. Paterson, Partygate and Pincher. Raab on holiday during the withdrawal of Afghanistan. Cummings pissing around the Rose Garden talking about his eye sight. Johnson taking loans to pay for wallpaper and freebie holidays. Hancock employing his affair partner. Parish's tractor porn, Warburtons affairs and cocaine plus all the rest, Roberts, griffths etc.
Add to that Trussonomics and then the ushering through of their third PM. The missing whatsapps. The bungling of HS2. Infosys getting a leg up. and on...
I've barely scratched the surface.

And many of the same people involved in all of the above are still sitting around the Cabinet table pretending that they are the answer.

I think they've exhausted their own supporters.

That said I cant imagine why Labout want to take power given the current state of the country. It's going to take years to unravel.

newnamethanks · 16/02/2024 10:29

Agreed, notonthestairs, its a poisoned chalice but also our only alternative. Fingers crossed.

Roussette · 16/02/2024 10:40

@Notonthestairs Great post.

And your last para is what worries me. My best friend is Tory (we don't talk politics!) and she has already said things like... "well, let's see how Labour do, they won't do any better, it's down to them, I expect to see CoL crisis sorted very quickly, blah blah'...
No point in telling her what a nightmare they are inheriting after the Tories have pillaged the country.

placemats · 16/02/2024 10:42

It isn't a poisoned chalice, it's a way forward.

A way forward for hope and change, the good of our society, our well being and our country.

There is light and hope.

Eat that Thatcher 😀

Yeah. The plan is to stay quite and stand back from the Tory implosion!

The Tories try to goad Labour into engaging but their strategy is working well so far
