But then it automatically played Rees Mogg saying conservative+ reform had a greater vote share than Labour

And non Tories got a greater vote share than Tories at the last GE. Didn’t see him highlighting that, did we?

Notonthestairs · 16/02/2024 11:39

The Conservative supporters narrative seems to be that they really, genuinely, hope that Labour will live up to all expectations (expactations that they are setting) but to wring their hands about how will they pay for it - all the while overlooking the financial mismanagement of the last decade.
The Conservatives repainted a bloody plane for £900,000 and spent £120 million on a festival of Brexit for fucks sakes. Thats before we get to Mone et al (which obviously wasn't their fault because of the pandemic you know and every economy threw taxpayers money at politicians mates and families apparently).

Even now the likes of the Mail are calling for tax cuts - made affordable only by further cuts to public sector spending after the election. Buy now, pay later.

I'm sick of the sight of them.

cakeorwine · 16/02/2024 11:40

When the Tory party discusses their concerns over misinformation in the election - I hope someone reminds them of this

I love Damien Egan. He seems like a sweetheart (local to me so I see him on the news). Great acceptance speech
Also like hearing a Brizzle accent. Makes a change from Rees Moggs drawl.

I think he came over as a genuinely lovely person.

RafaistheKingofClay · 16/02/2024 12:46

Tories seem to be losing votes to Labour and reform. Genuinely hard to see how they start to work out a way back from that. You can’t win one set of voters back without losing the others really.

The labour has no plan argument is slightly undermined by the fact that it seems people would rather vote for no plan than the plan Rishi is following.

pointythings · 16/02/2024 12:49

Alex Navalny has died.

GatoradeMeBitch · 16/02/2024 12:49

The plan has gone swimmingly. Sunak, Johnson, May, Cameron and pals have done marvelously out of our country. Not much left to wring out of us now, so nearly time for Rishi to recuperate on a private island for 6 months then hop onto the lucrative (extra lucrative now, let's hear it for those boosted corporate profits that never make it into their employee's bank accounts!) after dinner market.

pointythings · 16/02/2024 12:49

Alex Navalny has died.

it's terrible news. Such a brave individual.

LlynTegid · 16/02/2024 12:52

I am not convinced there will be a Labour majority even with these by-election results. There is the hidden Tory phenomenon, the voter ID issue (aka suppression), tactical voting, various scare tactics the right wing media will use, and boundary changes.

I think Labour will have the most seats though.

pointythings · 16/02/2024 12:58

@LlynTegid last round of local elections the people worst hit by ID requirements were the older demographic who skew Tory. I do think the shy Tory phenomenon is overstated too. Conversely there are a lot of furious Tories who will go for Reform or not vote (these are the One Nation types like my cousin).

IClaudine · 16/02/2024 13:22

The polls and the bookies all are pointing to a Labour majority.

As for voter ID, that is easily got around by registering for a postal vote. Tactical voting, I do think that is a concept embraced more by younger, left leaning voters.

If Reform UK decided not stand as part of some kind of deal, maybe then we'd be in trouble. But I doubt Tice would be up for that.

But nothing is guaranteed. 10pm on GE day is going to be nerve wracking!

DuncinToffee · 16/02/2024 13:49

New Conservatives say Sunak "must change course" after by-election defeats.

"We are calling on the Government to adapt to the reality that the by-elections reveal."

They call on him to:
1. Leave ECHR/repeal HRA
2. More legal migration curbs
3. Cut taxes
4. Welfare reform

Predictable and out of step with the majority of voters who are primarily concerned with health and cost of living.

cardibach · 16/02/2024 14:08

Are the New Conservatives stupid? Don’t answer that…
Surely it’s obvious that it’s the opposite of all that which people want, as evidenced by swings to the party opposed to all that?

DuncinToffee · 16/02/2024 14:20

I can't even remember who the New Cons are

A party united.

New Cons, same as the Old Cons, all part of the Great Con 2019.

Alex Navalny has died.

I was up on and off most of the night; watched the Wellingborough result announced live, listened to the cricket, India v England test match which was really exciting, was in a good and optimistic mood. And my ds came and told me about Navalny. So terrible. Casts a dark shadow over the day.

Totally agree. I was so upset about this. He survived Novichok at an airport to die like this in a prison in the Arctic. Putin is barbaric... he murders anyone who disagrees with him, be it journalists or those that don't agree with him.
An evil evil man.
I feel for Alexei's wife and family.

I urge anyone who has not seen his youtube piece on Putin's palace, to watch it. It is on youtube and called 'Putin's palace, the story of the world's biggest bribe'.
It's lengthy but really worth watching, even more so now.

In what world is your logical response to people voting against your policies to double down on those policies.

newnamethanks · 16/02/2024 18:05

Let's re-phrase "We are calling on the government to adapt to the reality that Reform is likely to steal all our voters unless we adopt the policies below. We, the Tories, the rightful party of government, will be toast. We can't attract the Lefties, we have to go for the bottom of the barrel like we did for Brexit"

jasflowers · 16/02/2024 18:16

Michael Heseltine just did an interview on the Radio, he said the Tories have lurched to the right, are continuing to do so and will go even further after the GE, he reminded the listeners of what happened after 1997... 3 leaders before they finally realised they needed someone "normal" back in charge.

I'm hoping they go through about 10 and go the way of the old Liberal party.
Atm they are just bunch of criminals.

BIossomtoes · 16/02/2024 18:17

I know I shouldn’t but I have a huge soft spot for Heseltine.

cakeorwine · 16/02/2024 18:29

I suspect that Tory party member who want to vote on a new Leader are different to people who might vote Tory - so if you are in a bubble, you don't realise how much your views and opinions don't correspond with what other people who might vote for you believe.

To be fair (and i'm not quite sure what this says about Labour) but he would fit right in alongside Starmer etc.

He curbed Thatcher & Joseph's more extreme ideas but i can't get away from the fact how far to the Right the Tories really have gone, along with the centre ground too.
