Sunak is giving a speech at the NFU today

https://x.com/ITVNewsPolitics/status/1759911158037807285?s=20

'I'll be totally honest, it's a work in progress'

I'm confused. He says they've done a trade agreement with Sweden regarding frozen foods. But Sweden is in the EU which I thought meant no individual trade agreements. Plus I've checked Tullverket's (customs) website and every mention of imports/exports with the UK refers to specific EU rules. So what is this agreement he's bigging up?

pointythings · 20/02/2024 16:06

Pettiness, censorship - we can have free speech as long as we mouth along with the Tories.

All I could find was a strategic partnership agreement

Strengthened partnership between United Kingdom and Sweden

On Friday 13 October, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a strategic partnership between the UK and Sweden. Th...

A bit like Badench bigging up Memorandum of Understanding with US states as trade deals

So a load of hot air and nonsense then. Or does 'cooperation on defense materials' refer to highly trained frozen prawns?

IClaudine · 20/02/2024 17:20

Another grubby deal.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/feb/20/michael-gove-failed-to-register-hospitality-from-donor-whose-firm-he-referred-for-ppe-contracts

Meller Designs, part of Meller’s family business until it was sold in January 2021, was a wholesaler of own-label fashion accessories to retailers, which in 2019, the year before the pandemic, made a pre-tax profit of less than £200,000. The £164m government PPE contracts boosted its revenues by 1,400% in 2020 and its profit increased to £16m in 2020. Meller and his co-owner then shared dividends of £5m

DuncinToffee · 20/02/2024 17:26

He donated to the Conservative party and Gove.

Guess who referred Meller to the PPE Vip lane

Ah you added the link now, ignore my question Wink

More grubbiness

The Home Office has sacked David Neal, the "independent" chief inspector of borders and immigration... for speaking to the media.

The 15 reports he has submitted to the Home Office in the last year remain unpublished.

That's why he spoke to the media, to expose his findings

https://x.com/matt_dathan/status/1759992648708853792?s=20

Findings were

He said that 'high risk' passengers are being allowed into the UK without security checks on private jets

He also told @matt_dathan that a quarter of foreign care workers are abusing UK visa rules by working illegally in other industries

That’s not grubbiness, it’s major injustice. Just like when Kwarteng sacked Tom Scholar. The audacity of them astounds me.

dontcallmelen · 20/02/2024 18:30

Every blinking day more lies, subterfuge, dirty politics they really are the dregs.

I am sure I read that the Home Secretary had lost confidence in him, and it is entirely within the remit of a Minister to dismiss someone in those circumstances.

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/02/2024 19:27

Given that most of the country has lost confidence in this tory government, surely someone should be able to dismiss them on these grounds as well?

I know the standard of government integrity, it shines through clearly in all those community noted tweets (or whatever we call them now). I'd take David Neals version until more evidence becomes available.

DuncinToffee · 20/02/2024 19:29

NEW: Labour’s @YvetteCooperMP responds to sacking of HM Inspector of Borders & Immigration:

“This is total Tory chaos on borders and immigration.

“A series of Conservative Home Secretaries have sought to bury uncomfortable truths revealed by the Chief Inspector about our broken borders, and shockingly they are still sitting on 15 unpublished reports - stretching back to April last year. The Home Secretary must now publish those reports in full.”

I have to disagree, it is only possible to lose confidence in something one had confidence in before. Surely no one had confidence in the Home Secretary before she was appointed?

pointythings · 20/02/2024 19:43

Well, of course the Home Secretary had lost confidence in David Neal. He couldn't be trusted to keep the lies and incompetence under wraps, so he had to go.

I imagine "lost confidence" can be roughly translated as "I'm sacking him because he won't stay quiet about the numerous reports he made not being published".
