It's getting uncomfortably close to the "useless eaters" mentality, which makes me quite uneasy.

I had never heard of that expression before so looked it up, chilling

“We have got lots of people who are signed off sick who don’t need to be."

Is he saying that medical professionals are signing people off sick fraudulently?

Yes. It is also a load of crap as it doesn't actually happen.

To get ESA, claimants must submit "fit notes" from their GP until the DWP can assess the claim. Usually takes about 4 to 6 months.

This assessment involves a humiliating and depressing face to face assessment with a healthcare professional. The DWP then decides whether the claimant is fit for work or not. If the latter, then the claimant no longer has to submit "fit notes.

So it is the DWP which signs people off as long term sick, not GPs.

Don't forget the lavishly paid PE teachers who go on multiple exotic holidays and drive Porsches.

Don't forget the Rolexes 🙄

I've also noticed an uptick in euthansia discussions. It was all over LBC yesterday. It's bloody scary.

AdamRyan · 20/02/2024 09:41

There appears to be quite a lot of undermining of public institutions going on just now. NHS, teachers, civil servants. I don't know if it's just blame shifting or something more sinister.

AdamRyan · 20/02/2024 09:43

Yesterday I was idly wondering how dictatorships start. Someone had posted a comment on the Starmer thread about not being a fan of democracy, which I found quite chilling 😮

I think it is a desperate move to woo back the right wing scumbags from Reform UK.

IClaudine · 20/02/2024 09:15

Sorry. But reading that stuff from the Express just makes me want to cry.

These sorts of articles have exact opposite effect on me, it shows Tory desperation, the 'Express has a tiny circulation & many of their readers won't agree with Sunak, as they'll know people with long term health conditions, such as knee or hip, waiting years for an NHS operation.

TBF the rest are more likely to vote Reform, the Tories have left it far too late to win back disaffected Tories from Reform, they have lost faith with Sunak.

To be honest more concerned that Nick Boles is advising labour, i don't want a Cameron Govt with a red tie, its under his stewardship of schools that we have such teacher and funding shortfalls.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/02/2024 11:01

We have got lots of people who are signed off sick who don’t need to be.

Too right Rishi. Ever wonder why that might be? Might it be because they are stuck on waiting lists which have shot up in the last 14 years. Or possibly because there are more people living in poverty which is linked to poor health outcomes. Or cuts to welfare payments which are also linked to poor health comes in the long term. Or maybe it’s because some twonk who used to be chancellor and is now PM fell for the false dichotomy of health vs economy in a pandemic and is still failing to pay attention to health organisations pointing out that Covid is a mass disabling event even if it does kill you and is under vaccinating the population because it isn’t cost effective.

Also looks like yet another by election incoming, this time for Blackpool South.

That’s brilliant.

There is no feud, no imagined slight, no minor disagreement even, that she won’t pursue to the ends of the earth. She can never dream of saying sorry. She lives in a binary world of death or glory. There are no half measures.

Brilliant article. I like the bit about her being the last hope of the intellectually challenged.

I just came to post that

Scott Benton MP has lost his appeal against a 35 day suspension. So there will likely be a recall petition in his Blackpool South seat, & another by-election.

On long covid and people unable to work, this is reportedly very, very good - reported by my friend (badly disabled by long covid) who is caught up in it all https://www.itv.com/watch/breathtaking/10a4089

He looks quite out of his depth. I can never decide if he's trying to make the best of a bad hand or actually believes what he's saying

"What's your fucking problem, you fucking fucks?" from the Crace article made me laugh more than it should have. I'm always uneasy when the Aggressive Black Woman trope is wheeled out. I actually admire KB for getting where she has done - we all know how the odds are stacked against Black women in politics, but I wish she'd opted for Labour rather than Tory.

Anything rather than admit that the sainted Kemi might have feet of clay.

Notonthestairs · 20/02/2024 13:26

IMO Badenoch isn't handling this crisis any differently from how Jenrick/Dowden/Raab etc would have handled it.
By obfuscating and inadvertently triggering the Streisand effect.

None of them manage challenge and criticism well, certainly.

Edited

I agree, I was a bit uncomfortable with the opening para. She is awful though.
